While driving home from work yesterday afternoon during somewhat-cloudy daylight, I suddenly noticed a bright bluish glow on nearby objects, heard a loud hum that sounded like it had 60/120ish Hz components, and felt a strange tingling/vibrating sensation in my upper body. When I got home, I checked the power company's outage map and saw that there was a ~500-customer outage centered around the area where this happened, which started around the time I drove through the area. The stated cause of the outage was "equipment problem." Because of this, I am guessing there was some kind of fault in the roadside electric distribution system which caused all of this, and I have some questions about what might have happened. I'm in a tricky situation with a car accident. [more inside]
My husband and I bought two monitors a little over 12 months ago. They worked just fine for 6 months when his developed an intermittent fault. Essentially, the screen abruptly goes static-y and weird, and horrible noise comes out the speakers - I guess it should be described as interference. None of the controls work and it has to be powered down and back on again. Two months after his started going wrong, mine did too - exactly the same way. [more inside]
I got into an accident yesterday. It was my first accident so I really had no idea what to do. The other driver kept insisting it was my fault and I just kept apologizing (which is admitting fault?). How does this play in during the insurance claim? [more inside]
For our son's 2nd birthday party, my wife ordered cupcakes from a bakery online for delivery to our son's daycare but they didn't show up. My wife was crushed and was understandably angry at the bakery, especially since she said she had paid for the cupcakes. But when I tried the online ordering form, there was no place to input any payment information. However, after submitting the form the company says it would get in contact for confirmation and payment information. It looks like the company didn't follow up with my wife, but also that my wife didn't follow up with the company. Is someone clearly at fault? How should I handle both my wife and the company? I got into an accident with another motorist. She side swiped my car and then hit a electric post. She failed to yield and was found to be at fault. Now the electric company is asking for $10k to repair the pole damage from me. Without having property damage insurance, and living in a no fault state, is there anything I can do?
I bought a pair of glasses and the lenses have been very poorly fitted, if the opticians give me hassle, is it possible to get MasterCard to force them to refund me? [more inside]
How can i get over physically hurting others (accidentally) at my own fault? [more inside]
If you rear-end someone in Washington State are you automatically "at-fault". [more inside]

This intermittent fault on our small company network makes me bang my head on the wall. Metafilter: help me troubleshoot this annoyance. Roughly once a day at no particular time I get the classic windows 'A network cable is unplugged' balloon appear on my desktop. About 50% of the time, this affects the rest of the 20-odd staff in the office and at least one person will lose some work due to application failure or somesuch. [more inside]
I was in a car accident about four years ago where I rear-ended another vehicle. AFAIK, it was my fault, but no one seemed injured at the time, and now I'm being sued for thousands more than my liability auto insurance will cover. If they are awarded what they're asking through arbitration or through a judgement, what are my options for paying the portion which my insurance won't cover? Background and other related questions inside. [more inside]
Someone in my immediate family was involved in a car accident today on a highway, and he was in the wrong (though no alcohol or drugs were involved). Not only that, but the other driver was killed, and he is probably going to be charged. He is traumatized, extremely distressed, in a bad state mentally. My question is for advice from anyone who has dealt with this kind of situation.
