Women and shoppers-in-women's clothes of Metafilter, I have been gladdened by the appearance this summer of women's denim shorts with actual inseams! But I've only seen them in the wild, and haven't found any in stores. If you've bought some can you tell me where? Criteria inside. [more inside]
I remember looking through books in my parents' basement as a kid, and I think they had a few 60's or 70's era Life yearbooks. There was a fashion shoot that has very much made an impression on me, but I can't find it, or any details about it. [more inside]
I am sick of the high street stores, they are boring me to tears. I'm not affluent enough to buy designer. So where should I shop online? Examples below the fold of the type of thing I'm looking for but alas, most of them are only based in the US. [more inside]

I want to buy a matching bomber jacket or varsity jacket & cheerleader skirt from a dance/athletic supplier, rather than a fashion retailer. These are pretty standard items, so it shouldn't be too difficult, but I was wondering if any of you had particular experience with any specific vendor! I only want to buy one of each, so no bulk minimums is good. [more inside]
I have a date tonight in NYC. I want to look dapper as hell. Please help a non-New-Yorker figure out how to make this happen a) today and b) ideally on the cheap. [more inside]
A few years ago while studying abroad in Beijing I had a qipao (cheongsam) tailor-made. I have since learned about the phenomenon of cultural appropriation, and as I am white I have not felt comfortable wearing it. I'm attending a wedding soon and would really like to get some use out of this dress. Would it be cultural appropriation/inappropriate for me to wear it?
Some years ago I spotted an almost certainly designer dress (blue, maxi, sleeveless, buttons) on the sidewalks of Manhattan. If possible, I'd like to ID it so that I can stalk on eBay/resale sites. [more inside]
I will be attending a wedding as a guest next weekend. My options for a suit are: dark grey, light grey, and a lighter navy. I'm interested in buying a new shirt and tie combo for the occasion, but I'm looking for some options. I'd like something that's bright and fun, but doesn't clash (which I often have a hard time discerning). [more inside]
My husband and I are visiting Montreal and we've never seen so many white people with dreadlocks in one place. What's up with this? [more inside]
I'm getting married this summer :D and can't decide what to wear D: I really bristle at the idea of wearing traditional men's formal wear, especially a tux—it just feels wrong and inauthentic for who I am. I need help finding something that feels right and while we've had no trouble saying 'screw tradition we'll do it our way' for pretty much everything else wedding wise I'm struggling in figuring out what that is for me in this case. I spotted the boot of my dreams, but didn't ask the wearer where she got them. Can you help me on my footwear quest? [more inside]
I'd like to get my husband a nice belt for our 3rd ("leather") anniversary. [more inside]
Hi everyone, I am trying to figure out where to shop. I am an average sized woman, 5, 4" and I work part time in a school and have three young kids. I need things that coordinate and can more or less go between work and home...although I am in the stage where things get stained often!! I just tried stitch fix. I was so disappointed! The quality didn't seem to be great, the items looked like not great quality, one dress was way too long, three shirts looked like maternity on me, and one was polyester, which is awful in HOT, HOT weather where I live. I have no time to shop, but I don't want to go buy boxy looking clothing. I would like clothing that fits, and I can't figure out where to get this. I am spending way too much money shopping online and guessing just to have to pay all of the shipping fees to order and return! I have seen people recommend Boden, but others say sizes are inconsistent. I'm not a huge fan of JCrew. Thanks so much!!
I wear cardigans every day, and I want to leave them open in front (whether they have buttons or not). But when I walk, my cardigans blow open, slide off my shoulders and then down my arms. I am constantly pulling them up or even holding them as I walk. What could I do to solve this problem and keep my cardigans in place? [more inside]
Back when I worked at a college bookstore, I was lucky enough to pick up the first collection of Fruits postcards, depicting amazingly eclectic and inspiring street fashion in Japan. Shoichi Aoki's photos have been above my living-room couch for the past 10 years. The question: Are there any other street-fashion or similar world-culture postcard sets like this you'd recommend? Does anyone recognize this skirt Sharon Horgan wears in season 2, episode 5 of Catastrophe? I want it. A lot.
I've been slowly improving my wardrobe but somehow I'm feeling a kind of impostor syndrome--as though I'm just playing dress-up and look ridiculous. [more inside]
For at least the immediate future I'll need pass through security in a federal courthouse without the benefit of employee ID, which means going through a metal detector. I need a durable, metal-free belt (leather or otherwise) that fits standard 35mm belt loops and looks reasonably presentable in a casual-end-of-business-casual environment. Thanks!
Nearing the end of my first trimester, gained some weight on top of the belly I already had and I can't suck it in anymore. What the hell to wear? [more inside]

OK, knowing the answer will probably not make me a better, happier, wiser person, but I've got to know: in some random Tumblr surfing I saw this picture, apparently a still from a movie... [more inside]
I found this men's fashion blog called Well Spent and I love it. I love the emphasis on responsible sourcing (environmentally and labor-wise), a lot of made in the US and Canada items, and "buy it for life" quality– meaning items so well made I could hand them down to my kids. Is there a woman's fashion blog like this?
So I finally have had to concede that What Would A Nerd Wear, my long-time style bible, is long gone and never coming back. Is anyone else on the great wide internet doing something similar for the modren era? If you, too, are a nerd who is trying to learn how to dress yourself, what are your go-tos? [more inside]
Considering he loves vintage and also may sew himself, I'm wondering if this shirt/smock that Robbie Turner is wearing in his talking heads on RuPaul's Drag Race is something that can be purchased? I can't find it with my meager Google skills. <

So I think I finally grew out of my knapsack. Rushing to/from meetings, the knapsack gives off a distinctly student vibe, which, coupled with my boyish charm, isn't the look I'm going for in my new prestigious university job. Also, I'm in my mid 30s. [more inside]

Is there a term that defines the angle of a brim with respect to the front of the hat or cap? One extreme would be the brim on the cloth caps competing bicyclists wore: straight up, essentially lying flush against the front of the hat. In the middle would be the brim of a French policeman's kepi or the cap worn by the stuntman in "A Man and a Woman": straight out, at a 90° angle from the front. At the other extreme would be straight down, like the brim of the 19th-century Marine pill-box cap. [more inside]

I have a creative friend who wants to make his own clothes, so I recently purchased him this book on shirtmaking. But what about the bottom half? I'll get him the same author's trouser book, but does anyone know of resources for making jeans, or any other man-focused sewing info? So much seems to be focused on women, with men's items being just a sidebar. He's very fashionable, so even pattern maker suggestions, etc. are welcome.
I am a lady who has recently gotten into dressing more feminine. But I am also a lady who has just moved to the Midwest, and it is winter here now. How should I be dressing? [more inside]

Where can I find more visual glossaries of international fashion subcultures, particularly the ones that are lesser-known or more specific? They'll have photos or video of the style, some background on what the style is about and where it's from, and some description of key elements. Some examples of what I'm after are Refinery29's Style out There playlist, this guide to Japanese fashion, and this list of men's fashion.
