Why are there so many old barns

I live in southern Alberta Canada and love driving around on backroads. I have noticed that in the farm areas there are lots and lots of old barns. Lots of them are literally falling down with their roofs collapsed, too old to store anything in, and still remain next to the farmer's new barn. We were wondering why there are so many that haven't been torn down? [more inside]

Hudson Valley, NY farm visits?

What are some particularly noteworthy farms to visit in Hudson Valley, NY? Obviously, they would need to be open to the public, but I don't necessarily need a formal tour- if they have nice grounds and interesting foodstuffs for sale, that's just fine. We'll be staying in Hudson, but have a car.

Red barns

Being a city person, I am curious about why so many barns on the farms I see when driving around the country are painted red. Why is the color red seem to be the most common barn color? Or, is it just the farm neighborhoods I have been through? LAG
