For my first question on the green, I'd like to put the clever brains here to work. This is for a permaculture design course project, someday I would like to see it come true but that is a way off.

You know that last time you drove through Mississippi or Louisiana and you passed by acre after acre of pine trees, all in nice rows? Help me find a publicly-accessible spot like that near New Orleans so that I can use it as a background in a photo.

My husband and I hoping to be the farmers running a CSA farm at a new co-housing development (similar to Prairie Crossing, Ecovillage at Ithaca, or Davis Homes). At some point we will probably need to "pitch" our business - and we have everything but a name; it will undoubtably be easier with a name... and we're at a total loss.

I was wondering if there are good examples of crime novels set on farms or based around agriculture. Novels like In True Blood, or Gillian Flynn's Dark Places or the new Image Comics series Revival. I'm interested in discovering if there's more crime fiction not set in cities, but more rural and based around farming.

Keep the pickup or get a trailer? I bought a Ford F-150 pickup truck about 9 months ago for using out at a rural property I co-own. It's been helpful for moving materials, towing travel trailers out there, picking up straw, transporting heavy machinery, but I feel like I might be able to get by with my Subaru and a 6x8' or so utility trailer.

I'm looking for a pumpkin and apple picking experience in Georgia that allows for me to actually pick a pumpkin off the vine. I want to take a hayride out to an actual pumpkin patch and/or apple trees, without the increasingly common pre-picked vegetables/fruits. I'm in Atlanta so the closer the better, but a 2 hour drive is totally acceptable for the right experience. Thanks!

Help me find this children's book: About the seasons on a farm. No words, just four illustrations of the same barnyard with animals in the different seasons. The one from my childhood was over-sized and cardboard.

I found an ant queen under a pile of compost in the garden. I've taken her, some of her colony, and a few larve/eggs and I put them in a mason jar. They've lived on my desk for about a week. The larve are all gone now, I suspect they've matured. And I just found where they hid the queen and it looks like she's starting to lay again. Now what?

Should we lease our land to a solar energy company? We were approached by a solar energy company that wants to lease 5 acres of our family (3 generations) land in Ontario, Canada for solar collectors. We are having some lawyers and other folks make recommendations and look over contracts, etc. What sort of things might we be missing? Will our neighbors hate us? In 10 years, what will make us say, "didn't see that coming?"

Name That Show-filter: My family is in search of the name of a British show. It had footage of real animals on a farm in Britain in winter, spring, summer and fall - four episodes total. There was a voiceover which gave them names and characters - one notable scene involved Mr. Weasel eating Mr. Rabbit (not their real names - also, may have been a fox). Help?

I can find plenty about
bear safety and
mountain lion safety, but little similar info about cattle. What safety measures can I, a city boy, take in order to keep from being stampeded, gored or otherwise killed or injured by cattle as I am a guest in their pastures? What behaviors can I look for in cattle to give me a feel for how they feel about us when we're near them?

It's time to begin my dream garden - help me design it!
I've always dreamt of being self-sufficient enough to virtually take my family off the food grid. Last year we moved to a house with an acre of land, all woods, and as soon as this latest snow dump disappears the contractors will arrive and clear approximately 5,000 sf of it (out-of-scale pictures
here).
I'm poised on the brink of drawing up plans and am eager for some input; I've got the wee beginnings of an orchard coming in March, plus the beds will be built of harvested timbers and thus fairly permanent, so I want to get the design right the first time.

Looking for a farm-related gift for my father's birthday. He recently bought a pretty large farm after living in the 'burbs his entire life. The main purpose of the farm is so my mother can house her horses there, but my father is quite excited to use their sizable land for other purposes too, which may or may not include raising chickens, growing all sorts of produce, and other activities that people do on farms...
