I'd like to get out of DC for a day this weekend to see the last of the fall leaves. Difficulty: no car. Any suggestions? [more inside]
I'll be traveling to SF for business in mid November, and I booked my flight so I'll have a long weekend before the obligatory part of the trip starts. I'd like to spend at least two days seeing the nearby parks, but I'm worried about weather and accommodations. [more inside]
Where is the best fall foliage in the Puget Sound area?
What are your absolute favorite seasonal or holiday children's books? Bonus points: lovely illustrations; likely out of print or otherwise not on the front page of the relevant section of Amazon. [more inside]
I just moved back to the Willamette Valley after a couple-year stint in year-round warm climates. While living in Oregon I never quite got the hang of constant clothing layering and dampness. I am determined this time around to look fashionable while staying warm and dry. It seems like everyone is perpetually wearing outdoor gear (REI/Patagonia/North Face rain layers, practical waterproof clogs, sporty-wear) and I'm just not into doing that - I want to look put-together and stylish. How can I go about doing this? More snowflakes inside. [more inside]
I would like to take a two week vacation to Europe this upcoming fall (most likely October) and I am currently overwhelmed with all the possible options! I'm looking at a few different places, but maybe you can recommend an interesting activity, festival, spectacle that I just have to see. [more inside]
I fell 2 1/2 months ago, badly hitting my shin, just below the knee. It left me unable to kneel or crawl on it, due to a very sore tender spot there, which can be felt when the knee is bent. Once she saw there was no fracture on an x-ray, my doctor (GP) was uninterested. By sheer bad luck, I fell again a fortnight ago and hit the same spot. What has happened? Why does it take so long to heal? Is it worth paying to go to a physiotherapist? [more inside]
It turns out that playing FPS and racing games while walking on a treadmill can lead to vertigo, nausea, and gracelessly falling on the floor. Can you suggest games which might minimize these issues? [more inside]

My wife and I had to move our road trip to the Telluride area back a couple of weeks to the first week of October. I'm worried that we will be greeted with bare aspen trees! I know that the timing of peak color can change from year to year, so I realize that any advice is just a best guess. So, are we in luck? Thanks!
A middle-aged female neighbor, Rachel, fell down a long flight of carpeted stairs yesterday while sleepwalking. She seems okay and says she's very fortunate as she hit everything several times including her head. They made the decision not to go to the hospital and we neighbors did our best to help. Today she's doing very well but we wonder from her description of a sharp pain upon landing whether she might have a fractured rib. I've already read this post about rib fracture. [more inside]
I am looking for something like these for our backyard. They need to be designed for outdoor use and rain. You can find similar ones online, but since these are really heavy, the shipping costs are as much as the mats. Are there any local retailers in the bay area that will sell small quantities to an individual? I have Amazon Prime but have not found anything Prime-eligible that looks decent.
Two and a half weeks ago, I tripped and fell (with maximum drama and embarrassment) at work. I landed on the bottom of my knee (beneath the knee cap) and shin with great force onto a hard surface, concrete covered with berber carpet. It's still developing new and odd bruising (details within) and is still remarkably uncomfortable. The skin and knee bones don't hurt, but the soft tissue is very ouchy. Is this a "deep bruises take time to heal" thing or a "Martha, get your bruised self to the doctor" thing? [more inside]
There are summer and winter versions of big sports events such as the Olympics and the X Games. Are there spring and fall-based sporting events too? If not, why not? Are there any sports that are specially seasonal outside summer/winter?
Yesterday, my partner slipped and fell while dropping our kid off at preschool. Every possible option about how to handle this makes me uneasy. You're not my lawyer, but that's okay, because my question is not if I can call I lawyer (or let my insurance company do the same), but whether I want to do that... [more inside]
A few hours ago I slipped and fell down half a flight of stairs, injuring my back. How important is it that I see a doctor? Is there anything I can do to make going into work tomorrow less terrible? [more inside]
I need a Thanksgiving-related, autumn-inspired dessert to bake. I would like something with some manner of fall seasonings like ginger or cloves that will make the house smell like the holidays. I am not looking for pumpkin pie (other pumpkin recipes are welcome though). [more inside]
My father is suffering from a severe concussion. He was making great progress but all of a sudden, things have worsened. I have researched/googled concussions but everything is so clinical. It is autumn in the U.S., but I am visiting New Zealand next month, where it will be spring. This is my first time to the southern hemisphere, and I'm wondering what I will encounter! Do they even know that it's pumpkin spice latte season there? [more inside]
Autumn/fall is my favorite season and I love the feel and experience of the leaves changing color, the chill in the air, and traditional fall activities. The episode "Kiss and Tell" from Gilmore Girls, for example, centers around an autumn festival and has this sort of atmosphere. Could you give me some movies/documentaries/tv shows/episodes that also embody autumn?
I had no idea how much I wanted a pumpkin spice whiskey until I turned up this via Facebook this morning. But! It's only sold in New England! I can't find anywhere to buy it online and I don't know anyone who lives in New England. Am I out of options? Please let me know if you have any ideas/suggestions for obtaining this. (I live in Seattle, if that helps.) Thanks!

What are your favorite children's books about autumn and Halloween? [more inside]
I’m currently expecting my first child, who is due around Halloween. I have some minor and probably totally inconsequential—yet nagging—worries about her expected birthdate, and would love if those of you who are late fall babies OR a parent of a late fall baby would come in and assuage my concerns. I recently dated this guy whom I have to admit I liked him a lot for the sex in spite of everything else I hated about him. He is your definition of a player, he is hot and cold, talks to you one weekend, and not talk to you the next. After three months of hot and cold behaviors, I have finally decided to let him go but inside I am still hurting. Any heart to heart advice? [more inside]

For the first six months of his life, baby machine has lived pretty exclusively in onesies & sleepers. Now that the weather is turning colder he's still in sleepers but I'm wondering whether they are going to be enough. So mostly he's been a hobo baby with many wraps and sweaters and blankets that make going places slightly daunting. What did your small child wear that worked for fall/winter? [more inside]
