Have my computer and printer broken up forever?

We have a PC (purchased within the last year) and an HP OfficeJet J6480 printer (a few years old). Last week we switched our wireless connection from an AT&T DSL to AT&T UVerse. We networked both the computer and the printer. (I networked the printer BOTH from the computer and on its own through the glass panel--there is no way the thing is NOT networked at this point.) I reinstalled the printer software with the latest download from the HP tech support site. We tried connecting the printer to the computer directly with a cable. We have turned the computer, printer, and router on and off until we're blue in the face. The printer has two full cartridges of ink. It says it's the default printer and that it's online. It even SAYS it's printing something when I send a document to it--and then two minutes later it says sorry, can't print. WHY are the computer and printer not communicating? Is their relationship doomed forever? [more inside]

Why do I keep killing bass amps?

Last night, at an otherwise excellent show, my electric bass amp died. Power was on, amp was off, and would not turn on any longer. In the middle of a song. This would be fine, but: this is my third amp that's died in three years. What's up? [more inside]

Is the sky no longer the limit? Getting back on track in med school

I had a rough start to medical school academically. People keep telling me that if I "do well" here on out, it "shouldn't matter" in four years when I apply to the next stage in my training (residency). That's easy for them to say, but I need more perspective than that. I'm bothered that it could put a "ceiling" on what I might be able to achieve otherwise. Those who have experience with medical education and academics, please give me your thoughts! [more inside]

I want to read tales of business fraud and failure

I love to read books about real life business frauds and failures. For example, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room is a favorite as is The Informant. Fraud can be fun to read about, but it isn't necessary. Hubris and poor judgment can be enough if the story is told well. Can you recommend books I might enjoy?

OKC's Kiss/Kill/Marry

Have you (or someone you know) been successful with individuals who are a low match for you on OKC? I consider low to be below '80% Match'. This is assuming you've both answered at least a 100 questions. Success I consider to be at least a few months of going out. I'm trying to get a sense of whether it is reasonable to ignore contact from low-matching individuals or if those scores are just meaningless once you get to know someone in person. Should you give that person a shot or is it a waste of time? I'm not so much concerned with the friend or enemy score.

Bad semester, discouraging. How to bounce back?

So after reaching the unpleasant realization that even if I get a 4.0 this semester, my GPA won't be as high as it was before my horrible Semester Of 2012. I am a Junior and planning to apply to med school after a gap year, so now is REALLY not the time to hit a downward trend. Case Studies required of Software Business Failures?

I would be interested in hearing case studies for software business failures that have occurred due to one or both of the following factors: - Wholesale replacement of entire engineering staff (e.g. firing all staff in original location and replacing with staff in a new location). - Winding down product development on existing products with the expectation that it will be replaced by a new platform in the future (I'm thinking along the lines of Ashton Tate here and their DBase product). I would also be interested in hearing any examples of where either of these strategies has been put into effect, and it been a success, rather than a failure. [more inside]
