What do I do with this mascarpone?

It... might have so happened that I went to the store more drunk than is wise. I wanted to make pasta, and so I went to get any kind of melty-whatchacallem cheese stuff for it (sorry, I'm not a native speaker). And I bought quite a bit of it, steeply discounted and all! And now I have a lot of mascarpone. [more inside]

Home Power Generator Question

Every summer and winter, random weather related power failures (as well as those caused by people knocking down power poles - it's rural with lots of winding roads) leave the house without power for hours to days. So I'm thinking about getting a Generac 8kw gas-powered portable with a manual transfer switch. A Generac 10kw propane powered installed with an automatic transfer switch is at least 6 six times more expensive and I don't see much of an extra benefit. [more inside]

Give me some books about failing.

I'm hitting a rough patch in my life and really failing at something for the first time(bout to drop out of graduate school). I'm looking for recommendations of novels or books that feature characters failing(in whatever way you define that). Not necessarily looking for feel-good/happy endings(although those are alright!). I'm more just curious about how others deal with failing + failing. Kind of a listening to sad music after a break-up thing.

Please Help Me Fail.

I need to screw up a couple of times. Once I do, I'll realize it's not the end of the world, and I will be able to stop keeping everything on hold. But I've been on hold for most of my life, paralyzed and afraid to move for fear of not getting it perfectly right. How do I bring myself to put forth the effort to do the scary thing, even knowing that that's the only way I can make it stop being scary? [more inside]

Coping with failure and moving forward with life

I'm graduating college with the least desirable outcome possible--low GPA, no honors, no club involvement, no positive relationships with my professors etc. in kind of a useless liberal arts major, purely because of laziness. This in addition to the fact that it wasted over $200k of my parents money is making me feel really bad (as it should). How do I move on from what feels like a really big failure? [more inside]

Letting go- failure or quitting? what's the difference?

I am having a hard time letting go of something. I have been told that I have an amazing ability to persevere and I can, unfortunately, keep on trying to make things work- for ever! Needless to say, letting a current bad situation go is proving to be near impossible because I see doing that as outright failure, not to mention a complete waste of 1+ year. My friends say its not failure, and I don't think I understand the difference. So I am hoping that maybe you can explain with personal anecdotes? [more inside]

Have my computer and printer broken up forever?

We have a PC (purchased within the last year) and an HP OfficeJet J6480 printer (a few years old). Last week we switched our wireless connection from an AT&T DSL to AT&T UVerse. We networked both the computer and the printer. (I networked the printer BOTH from the computer and on its own through the glass panel--there is no way the thing is NOT networked at this point.) I reinstalled the printer software with the latest download from the HP tech support site. We tried connecting the printer to the computer directly with a cable. We have turned the computer, printer, and router on and off until we're blue in the face. The printer has two full cartridges of ink. It says it's the default printer and that it's online. It even SAYS it's printing something when I send a document to it--and then two minutes later it says sorry, can't print. WHY are the computer and printer not communicating? Is their relationship doomed forever? [more inside]

Is the sky no longer the limit? Getting back on track in med school

I had a rough start to medical school academically. People keep telling me that if I "do well" here on out, it "shouldn't matter" in four years when I apply to the next stage in my training (residency). That's easy for them to say, but I need more perspective than that. I'm bothered that it could put a "ceiling" on what I might be able to achieve otherwise. OKC's Kiss/Kill/Marry

Have you (or someone you know) been successful with individuals who are a low match for you on OKC? I consider low to be below '80% Match'. This is assuming you've both answered at least a 100 questions. Success I consider to be at least a few months of going out. I'm trying to get a sense of whether it is reasonable to ignore contact from low-matching individuals or if those scores are just meaningless once you get to know someone in person. Should you give that person a shot or is it a waste of time? I'm not so much concerned with the friend or enemy score.

Case Studies required of Software Business Failures?

I would be interested in hearing case studies for software business failures that have occurred due to one or both of the following factors: - Wholesale replacement of entire engineering staff (e.g. firing all staff in original location and replacing with staff in a new location). - Winding down product development on existing products with the expectation that it will be replaced by a new platform in the future (I'm thinking along the lines of Ashton Tate here and their DBase product). I would also be interested in hearing any examples of where either of these strategies has been put into effect, and it been a success, rather than a failure. [more inside]
