I have a Dell Inspiron 600m that has a weird problem: USB flash drives aren't detected at all, but other usb devices (i.e. external usb harddrives) work perfectly fine. Clean install of Windows with updated drivers does not fix this problem. My google-fu apparently isn't sophisticated enough to dig up a solution. Ideas?

I turn computer on then drive spins up and then a very low click and the machine turns off! My question is will I benefit from putting this drive (120GB) in the freezer in a plastic bag then trying again or should I try and read from Knoppix, though I don't know if the machine will even boot enough for me to get to the BIOS to change the drive order and boot from CD.

I'm looking for the name a book or published journal that was titled something along the lines of Diary of a Failure/ an Insignificant Man etc., written by a guy who had wanted to lead an extraordinary life but found out he was terminally ill (his doctor and wife were already aware of this) and had only a few months to live, thus putting to waste all his plans and ambitions. I popped in a Win2000 disk into my Toshiba laptop (600 Mhz Celeron Satellite). Proceeded to reformat into FAT32 and it claimed that the disk has errors and refuses to format. No information lost but I've been looking at harddrives and they're priced at $65 and higher. Specs for the replacement harddrive are [2.5 inch - ATA-100 - 44 pin IDC - 4200 rpm - buffer: 8 MB]. I don't want to pay that kind of money for a relatively worthless computer. What can I do? Thanks in advance.

Do CD-RW drives have a limited number of burns? A couple of computer science majors at my old school told me this and I didn't really beleive it. However, my HP CD-RW has stopped writing discs (but still reads fine). I've had it since the summer of 2000 but granted it's 4 years old, I haven't really pushed it hard. I use it to read CD-ROMS and play music CDs occasionally, and have probably burned a couple-dozen music CDs. Is it kaput, in need of cleaning, or what?
