What do I do with "fans" on Facebook?

I'm lucky enough to be experiencing some success in my career, and people are adding me on Facebook who don't know me. I want to communicate with these people as I appreciate their support, but how do I do this in the best and safest way? [more inside]

So apparently my family is publicly bragging about our child abuse now?

So I log onto facebook for the first time in weeks today and see my brother has posted this image and my mother has "liked" it. Nothing that was done to us as kids would qualify as spanking (punched in the side of the head very often, welts on skin, bruises, dad threatening my sister with a kitchen knife, holding us off the ground by our necks, locking us in the bathroom and hitting us for half an hour for eating the wrong yoghurt from the fridge, knocked over if we ever spoke back to them etc). My brother was actually very rarely hit and it stopped altogether when mum threatened to divorce dad after he hit my brother badly one time. (No such luck for us girls though). I'm SO ANGRY right now and want to react but don't know how it would improve anything. I feel like I'm being goaded but am trapped in how I handle this, with it being a public forum all my friends can see. Please Mefi help me stay calm and do this right (even if that means doing nothing). [more inside]

Is my wifi router blocking images from Facebook?

I recently replaced a couple of old LinkSys WRT54G routers running DD-WRT in my home with a couple of couple of D-Link DIR-615 routers that I got as refurbs from woot.com. I bought these because the old machines only did 802.11 B/G whereas nearly everyone in the house now has a device that has 802.11 N capability. All seems well to me, but my wife and younger daughter consistently complain that they now frequently are unable to display some images from Facebook, and that this began to occur precisely at the time that I put these new routers in. Social media for antisocial Luddites

All of the communications and marketing jobs I've been applying for lately have required experience posting to social media. In my personal life, I've avoided having anything to do with Facebook, Twitter and so forth, and I'm wondering how I can quickly get up to speed on these things. All I need is to be able to convince a potential employer that I can effectively promote them on social media, without ever having done this as part of my job responsibilities. How to accomplish this? [more inside]

Poisoning the well of Facebook's facial recognition

I don't like that Facebook knows my face, so I'm tagging myself (and asking that friends tag me) in a lot of random photos. Does this work? Any tips to do this more efficiently? Is the algorithm already smart enough to detect that something fishy is going on?

How do I get the "follow" button to show up on Facebook posts?

I have a Galaxy S3 that I've been using to check facebook groups by clicking on the link in my email notification, then opening it in Chrome. I like to "follow" posts to get email notification if anyone else comments. I just got a Nexus 7, and when I access my groups in Chrome, there's no follow button, only "like," "comment," and "share." The follow button does show up in Firefox, but Firefox doesn't let me pinch zoom. Trying to click on the link in my email and then choosing the facebook app to open it with doesn't work at all. So if anyone has ideas about how to either make the "follow" button show up in Chrome or how to zoom in Firefox or if I should use a different browser/app, please let me know. Thanks!

Do I not understand Facebook standards?

I feel ridiculous for even asking but...I have a very happy and satisfying relationship with my domestic partner of several years. Seriously...everything's fine except for this one little thing...it's about how we both approach Facebook (we're both in our late 30's). He and I don't communicate, like or comment on each other's walls and we never have. But he does comment in a somewhat flirty manner with his exes (and I mean these are women from MANY years ago), and I've asked him, "What's up with that?" and his response has been, "It's nothing. Just being chatty." [more inside]

How to usefully download posts and comments from a secret Facebook group

Can you sell the opportunity to post ads on a private facebook group?

A professional association (non-profit) of which I am a member has a private facebook group and a dead-tree newsletter. Advertising a job opportunity in the newsletter costs a few tens of dollars. The association wants to include the advert on the Facebook group as part of that fee, and prevent anyone posting a vacancy on Facebook unless they pay the same fee. Aside from its innate stupidity (these jobs are always on mailing lists, LinkedIn, twitter and so on anyway) this feels to me like it must be in breach of Facebook's TOS somehow. But googling "pay to advertise|post| on facebook" just leads to SEO-marketing hell, and it would be a real shame if the organisation gets its group banned or closed. Does anyone have any idea if this is a legitimate thing to do?

What's causing Word and Facebook to break at the same time?

When I'm working, I often have Word 2010 document open and Facebook open in a Chrome browser tab. Every so often, I'll try to close a Word doc and it'll hang with "not responding". Simultaneously, I'm unable to do anything in Facebook - can't scroll, click, etc. Every other Chrome tab works fine, every other Windows application works fine. I can close the FB tab, but the Word doc is still stuck. Restarting Chrome and Word doesn't do anything. Task Manager doesn't show any unusual activity or processes running. [more inside]

What's happening with these friend requests?

Facebook is adding friends that I've never met and giving the message saying that I've requested the friendship (as in: "So-and-so has accepted your friend request"). To the best of my knowledge, I have not. In both cases these were recently created profiles, but unlike spam profiles I've seen in the past, these are both related to some friends that I actually do know in real life, and aren't obvious scams with super model photos. This happened two days ago, and yesterday. [more inside]
