I live on a busy London street and am making curtains for a second-floor room with 2 large wooden sash windows that face the street. Guests sometimes sleep in this room and I'd like to minimise street noise for their sake. My curtain materials are 1 layer of this heavy woven tapestry fabric (mostly cotton) and 1 layer of blackout fabric. Should I also be interlining the curtains with some kind of fluffy stuff, like quilt batting? Or would that be overkill? [more inside]
Leaving Danbury, CT at 8-9am on Saturday. Need to be at an event in Newport, RI by 4:30pm. I'm going to tour The Breakers, but what else should I do, either on the way or once I get there? Especially looking for arts & crafts/fabric/yarn stores beyond the usual big box ones.
I am looking for a very specific fabric for a dance costume. It's a stretch velvet in a zebra or tiger stripe print. Problem is all of the ones that I have been able to locate have had thick super dark stripes and I do not want that. My apologies for the horrible quality of the photo.
I want to cut two hats in half and sew each half to the other (e.g. one half of the hat will be team A and the other half of the hat will be team B). How can I most effectively do this? [more inside]

I'm looking to dye some fabric that's a 35/65 cotton/poly blend and I want to do it quick, dirty, and cheap. [more inside]
We have an Ikea Poäng chair. It's comfortable and the frame is in fine shape. The foam cushioning is in pretty good shape too. The fabric cover, however, is in rough shape. It's seen a lot of use and spent too much time in direct sunlight. It's (unevenly) faded and worn. Have you had a good experience replacing the cover through a third-party company? [more inside]
I moved into a new building a few months ago, and since then the washing machine (new GE top loader, stacked with dryer) has been busily destroying everything I own. Towels and sheets come out frayed, sweaters and t-shirts sprout holes, a cuff has just gotten half-ripped from its sleeve. Please help me figure out how to protect my stuff before it's all destroyed. [more inside]
I've seen a few articles about dresses, clothes and other structures designed by algorithm: you input a shape (a scan of a body, a 3d model of a dress, etc), and the algorithm reduces it to a mesh of triangles. These triangles can then be cut out of fabric and stitched together to make an odd-looking but well-fitted garment. What's this technique called? Is the software freely available? [more inside]
So, I went on a business trip and my well-loved Burberry black trench raincoat, which I bought new at a department store 5 or 6 years ago, was stolen. I would really like to replace it. The catch is that I can't figure out just what the fabric was. It was soft to the touch, almost silky, with a lustrous shine (not the high shine of a sateen), and water resistant. It definitely was not the classic Burberry cotton gabardine, which is much rougher to the touch. I failed at figuring this out via Google. Can the hive mind help?
What has your experience been with silk tops? Specifically in regards to Everlane and/or Equipment if you've purchased from there. What other tops/blouses can you recommend to keep warm and look presentable at work? [more inside]
Marker or fabric paint that will last well on flexible, heavy-use surfaces? Difficulty: I need it in a really unsaturated color like a soft medium grey or greyish blue. [more inside]
My mother is hoping to find this fabric (another view) for sale, but not having any luck. (Except all this scouring of fabric sites is turning up many other prints she absolutely has to have...)
I'm a rookie member of the Providence Grays, a vintage baseball team. This season, we are having a difficult time finding a source of wool that we can use for our baseball trousers. Can anyone help me find a source? [more inside]
I have some fabric I picked up from a remnant stall a while ago. It has Japanese writing and pictures of faces all over it - is it just a random design or are these characters from some manga\anime? (The place also had Naruto fabric, but there,s no logo I recognise here, nor anything on the selvege.) Picture here. Any ideas? I want to check in case it'll unwittingly offend Japanese speakers!
I'm going to climb a mountain. I want to hold up a banner and take a picture when I get to the top. Help me get a banner made that is ideal for the job. [more inside]

Is there a specific numbering system / grading system for fabric coarseness? I am specifically working with nylon for a bag.
Does upholstery paint really work? I have been offered a couch by a coworker. I really dig the shape of the couch, high back, lots of buttons, kinda swanky, retro looking. The color scheme looks like something from the Golden Girls though. [more inside]

Bought a remnant of this fabric at Nancy's Sewing Basket in Seattle, and was told there was no chance of getting more or finding out any information about it (the bolt with the item and vendor numbers had been discarded.) I need more, and AskMefi has found stranger things. Pictures within. [more inside]
There's an artwork on public display in my community that isn't labeled with the artist's name or the title of the piece, and I'd like to know more about it. The facility that has it on display doesn't have the information, so I'm hoping you could take a look at it (or just read my description) and tell me if you know more about it, or where I could find out who created it and what it is called. It's a rather unique piece, being a full-length overcoat that's been hardened/cast and mounted on a large canvas. The yellow floral pattern of the coat is seamlessly transferred to the background of the canvas. For a link to a phone-cam pic I took of it, click [more inside]
I need to find a fabric match for a seat cushion, but the furniture manufacturer doesn't exist anymore. Is there any hope for me? [more inside]
We have cats and, unfortunately, love them very much. We keep their nails clipped and have lots of scratching posts, but they still sink their little claws into everything. Are there fabrics, either for rugs or couches, that you've found work better with cat claws? I was told that things like microsuede provide less purchase for their little pointy claws -- is this true? What fabrics should we avoid?
For anyone with sewing experience, can you recommend sources for modern clothing patterns and fabrics? For style, think Anthropologie, but the less frippy pieces - simple, easy, drapey. For fabric, I'd like soft, high-quality cottons in a good range of colors. (I never see that kind of thing at fabric stores, so I'm guessing I'll have to order online.) [more inside]
I have made several cute things for my kid out of this fabric. A Spanish-speaking friend recently had a baby, and I'd like to find a similar pattern (but in Spanish) to make them a gift. [more inside]
I want to explore animating fabric being folded, cut and stitched in 3D. Is there any particular 3D software that would make simulating this particularly easy, or even just marginally easier than others? Or is it actually pretty basic? I can spend a bit... [more inside]
I am looking for the dress worn by the character "Ruth" in the Pedro Almodóvar film I'm So Excited. Is this dress (same style and fabric) available for purchase? [link to photo of dress inside] [more inside]

I Want It Now Filter - footstamp mix: I want to get this caftan and swan around in it all summer, I do not want to pay AUS 500 for it. Does anybody know where I can get a dupe for it, or some similar fabric?
Spurred by the events in Bangladesh, a growing dissatisfaction with clothing quality, as well as an oddly shaped body that doesn't conform well to rack sizing, I've decided to commit to making more of my own clothing. I know how to operate my sewing machine. I know how to read a pattern. I frankenstein and repurpose clothes on the regular. I need some advanced basics to take it to the next level. [more inside]
I've a variety of 100% cotton shirts in my closet with a variety of different feelings and textures! How can this be? Some of them are rough and stiff feeling while others are light and soft. I've seen terms such as "thread count", "knit", and "weight" but I don't know how they relate to what I'm wearing. Also those variables don't appear to be listed on the shirt tag anywhere! I often shop online and it'd be nice if I could have some idea of what any given shirt is going to feel like before I order it.

I'm looking for fabrics and sewing notions in Berlin. Large selection of fabrics, especially home decor would be great. Google is not helping me.
A couple of years ago I found the best black leather jacket ever, and I diligently applied some sort of waterproofing/leather protectant spray every few months for the first year. It's been pretty well-loved since then, and is starting to show slight signs of wear--nothing major, but enough so that I don't want it to get worse. How can I restore it to its former glory and keep it protected so I don't have to think about buying another one for many years? [more inside]
Do you think that silk dupioni is the best choice of fabric for my wedding dress when I am plus-sized? I have described it in detail inside. [more inside]
My son's school has a "100th day of school" t-shirt project coming up, requiring 100 of something to be on the shirt. He's a kindergartener with fine-motor issues who suggests a Pac-Man theme. I'd like him to decorate the shirt himself or at least part of it. So, how should he get 100 colored dots in various pastel colors on a black or navy t-shirt? Ideally the dot-making wouldn't require a lot of grip strength or precision. (We adults will help with the Pac-Man, ghosts, and maze lines as needed.) Bonus points for washability, but that's not essential.
I have a T-shirt made from a kind of fabric I've not seen since, I'd like to get more. It's supposedly 100% cotton, but I'm not sure if that's true. [more inside]
I want to make a jute lampshade, or rather, several trapezoidal pieces of jute stretched over wood frames that will act like a lampshade. I know almost nothing about jute, or lampshades, but plenty about wood. [more inside]
Where in or around Chicago can I buy 100% wool jersey fabric? I've found a couple places on-line, but strongly prefer to touch the fabric and verify the color in person before I drop $20+ per yard on it. I did not see any at Vogue on Roosevelt--they have suiting but I'm looking for a different drape than a wool twill.
My boyfriend has an awesome new t-shirt with a large, thick, flat image screened(?) on the front that bunched up and creased after the first wash-and-dry. Is there a way to get rid of the creases and folds in the image? And then what's the best way to care for it from here on out? [more inside]
