Just got my first eye prescription for mild farsightedness. The optometrist said my eyes could still focus on things fine so I didn't need glasses, but if I noticed eyestrain or headaches, then I could fix those problems with glasses. I don't notice eyestrain and only get headaches when I'm low on coffee. Is there any reason to go ahead and get glasses? Do glasses accelerate or slow any futher eye degeneration? [more inside]

My eyesight has always been great, and in general I see just fine. As a general rule, the world is not blurry and when I look at something, whether it be 1 foot or 20 (or 100) feet away, I see what I expect to see. I've never worn glasses. [more inside]

A couple of recent new acquaintances have strabismus (I don't like the term "lazy eye," sorry; it's a deviation of the alignment of one eye in relation to the other). Do people with strabismus generally prefer that the folks they're speaking with focus on one eye over the other? If it's not uncommon for one of the person's eyes to develop more strongly than the other, would it be polite to simply ask a casual acquaintance if they prefer that I look into the left or right eye as we talk together?

'nother dog question. Last year my (now) 9-year-old dog (Lab/golden mix) became afraid to descend stairs. She stands at the top and woofs until you stand at or near the bottom and reach up to her, then she will come down unassisted but tentatively as you "glilde" her down with a sweep of your arm (OK, maybe I just do the glide because it's fun). Very occasionally she has a similar problem climbing.
My first thought was her eyesight, but if it were failing, how would I know? And the presence/absence of light seems not to matter. Can a vet diagnose vision problems?

The stairs are uncarpeted wood. Does anyone think it would help to put a carpet runner on the stairs?
