I am in my late 30s and have always been nearsighted/myopic. My prescription is -7.25 with (I am told a lot of) astigmatism. My vision is starting to change...I can see bifocals on the distant horizon. [more inside]
My eyes have always been a problem. I had a partial retinal tear 20 years ago. I have tons of floaters. I am extremely nearsighted. I have "dry holes" in the back of my eyes from histoplasmosis. All of these things have been stable forever. Today, something new happened. It's in one eye only. It's like there's a black worm with a long tail dancing across my eye. It seems to be fixed in the center of my eye and it's swimming back and forth from that fixed place. What's going on? [more inside]
I had a dream recently in which a tiger's eye pendant figured prominently, which makes me curious what is the symbolic meaning of tiger's eye? [more inside]
I have Salzmann's Nodular Degeneration. My worst nightmare is happening, and I will soon (two weeks) be getting surgery in which my cornea will be sliced open (with a blade) while I lie there, fully awake. Help me freak out less. [more inside]
Lately I've been noticing my vision just seems crappy; I notice my vision just seems "busy"/"shimmering"/slightly noisy. This is particularly noticeable when I'm looking at high contrast things, like computer monitors in a dimmer room. I also see "outlines"/a glow, around contrasting colours, as well as what feels like flickering in some portions of my vision towards the periphery. [more inside]
I'm a new to eyeglasses as an adult (got my first pair two years ago at age 35). Aside from mild nearsightedness I have healthy eyes so far, but I have a family history of bad eye issues such as retinal detachments. What should I be doing now to maximize my eye health going forward? [more inside]
Seriously, what the hell is this thing on my eyelid? (Not gross, not disturbing, boring looking eyelid bump shown.) [more inside]
I had an eye exam by an optometrist at a boutique (non-chain) eye glass shop. This store is known for it's unique selection, and I selected an Oakley frame - with lenses ground by Oakley, and an everyday pair with the lenses ground by their usual lab. Unfortunately, my vision is a little bluury in my left eye with both pairs of glasses, and I feel nauseated when I wear them. I've only been able to wear either pair for a max of 20 minutes before I have to remove them due to the nausea and unsettled feeling. [more inside]
Im a mid-30s guy and I am extremely self conscious about my under eye bags. I started noticing it a couple of years ago and I thought it was due to diet or smoking or lack of sleep. Since, I have stopped smoking, I work out regularly and I have improved my sleep pattern (still not great, but a lot better). The eye bags in question are not black or red, but rather they are swollen...like I look like I am hungover all the time. Beyond the way it looks, I can feel the pressure under my eyes and it makes me think I am tired. Anyone else experience this or thoughts on how to improve?
I have a problem with my tear duct in one eye becoming intermittently blocked, and it's a huge pain in the...eye. This has been going on for about a year, and seems to flare up once or twice a month for 4-5 days at a time. I have seen an ophthalmologist - the first time he opened up the duct with a tool (not fun) and gave me some eyedrops. At the follow-up visit he cleared me and said to massage the side of my nose in the shower to prevent recurrences. He also indicated my next step would be surgery, which I'd super duper love to avoid. [more inside]

I have this weird eye contact problem that has plagued me since I can remember. I find all eye contact in general to be really unpleasantly intimate and intense, but several times a day when I'm talking to someone (both familiar people and strangers), I have a moment of frisson where it feels like I'm boring into their eyes with my own. The freaky part is that every single time I have this experience, it throws the person off--they stammer, look away, close their eyes for longer than just a blink, lose their train of thought, etc. As far as I know, I'm not changing anything about my facial expression--this is all happening somehow within the eye contact realm. [more inside]
Last night I experienced a strange optical disturbance/illusion/vision problem. What's that all about, and should I be concerned? [more inside]
I don't really trust that I'm getting a good eye exam from my optometrist (chain store) and felt the same about the previous two (local practice and another chain store.) Given that I'm not a doctor myself, how do I find/get a better eye exam or gain a reasonable confidence I'm getting a good exam in my current situation?
I have a 150 watt ceramic infrared heat bulb similar to this one http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-ReptiCare-Ceramic-Infrared/dp/B0002AQCPK that I use next to my desk to help keep me warm. It produces no visible light, only heat. Sometimes I have the urge to stare at it, can it hurt my eyes from the infrared radiation, similar to how looking at a regular light bulb can hurt your eyes? I am also interested in how these bulbs work, and the type of infrared radiation they give off if someone can explain it to me.
I have eczema on my eyelid, and have been advised by my GP not to use the prescribed steroid/antibiotic cream for more than a week. What should I be using now to help it heal, and keep the rest of my face happy? Are there any brands/ingredients I should steer clear of? [more inside]
I just had a complicated detached retina repaired. Now my eye doctor has prescribed oral steroids (prednisolone). I don't know how long the overall course is planned to be but I'm tapering down from 60mg/day to 7.5 mg/day over about 8 or 9 weeks, when I see the doctor again. I'm freaking out about side effects and withdrawal. Please tell me your personal experiences with oral steroids and suggest what I should do (without giving me medical advice). Thanks
I use the computer for 16-18 hours a day becasue I have a online business and I have noticed my vision worsening since doing this. I really don't want glasses and have seen a eye doctor who said I don't absolutely need glasses my vision is 20/25 I think he said. I used to have better vision before I spent so much time on the computer. I'm wondering if there any any "techniques" used by OSHA or anything to prevent eyestrain or vision deterioration from excessive computer use .

I have a thing about eating with people. Specifically, one-on-one meals where we're sitting across from each other the whole time. I already find eating in public kind of weird, but then having to make eye contact and talk while doing it compounds the problem and makes me squirmingly awkward, even with close friends. Is there anything I can do to shake this weird anxiety? [more inside]
I've recently realized that I rarely make eye contact with people, so I've been trying to get better by consciously remembering to do it in conversation. But, why is it when I do make eye contact with people, it's terrifying? [more inside]
So I have retinal vein occlusion in my right eye and I have seen the previous question here. My problem is that I have been to an optometrist, an ophthalmologist and my primary dr. Everything seems good. [more inside]
Sometimes when I'm relaxed, for instance sitting at my computer, I start to lose vision in my left eye. It usually takes the form of a dark "C" or donut around my central vision (e.g. I can see through it to a single word but it covers up most of the web page). If I blink or even move my eye in the slightest, it goes away, returning in a few seconds if I am still relaxed. [more inside]
My understanding is that things like sand or sawdust wash out of the eye easily but things like metal shavings especially steel shavings tend to stick to the eye and wont wash out. Why is this?

For the past two weeks, I've had a big noticeable distracting "floater" right in the middle of my field of vision in my dominant eye. Since it first showed up, it hasn't moved, grown, shrunk or done anything else exciting. But it's driving me batshit — it's distracting as hell when I try to read, for instance — and I'm vaguely worried it might be a symptom of something nasty. What should I do? Is there anything I can do?

YANMFD... I have a friend who, on Thursday, experienced sharp pains in his left side--he described the location as, "About an inch inside, directly aligned with my underarm". He felt it about 15 times over the course of the day and said it was "sharp and sudden" and caused him to wince and bend over. The next day, he woke up and there was blood in his right eye--not bloodshot, but blood, like a pool. It went away over the course of the day. He insists these things are not related and won't go to the doctor. As a result, I'm worried. Could these things be connected and what could they be? He's 44. [more inside]

Which animal has the hardest eyes? I was thinking about how eyes are pretty soft and it might be advantageous for a creature to have "natural goggles" protecting its squishy eyes. Which animal's eyes have the toughest coating? (I do not care to hear about the protective qualities of retractable eyeLIDs, only the surface which can not be retracted, and which must be seen through.)
What's it like to have two eyes? In other words, can someone give an explanation or offer a resource that could help me see (pardon the pun) what it's like to have stereoscopic vision?

Yesterday or the day before I noticed one of my cats was squinting a little in one eye. Then she started producing thick yellow goop. This morning there was a lot more thick yellow goop. This evening I noticed the nictating membrane of that eye is a little pinker and more swollen than the other one. She is having no trouble breathing and her appetite, thirst, and energy are normal. I don't have a lot of money. How urgent is this situation? [more inside]
I went to a ENT/facial surgeon recently for something unrelated, and I asked the doctor, who also does facial plastic surgery, what I could do about a large vein I have under my right eye. He had me speak with a woman in the office, and she told me, after looking at my vein(s), about a procedure for veins like mine (not spider veins) wherein they inject saline into the vein and then it goes away. What procedure is that? How much does it cost? Do you have a recommendation for a place in Philadelphia, PA? [more inside]
