I have a 150 watt ceramic infrared heat bulb similar to this one http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-ReptiCare-Ceramic-Infrared/dp/B0002AQCPK that I use next to my desk to help keep me warm. It produces no visible light, only heat. Sometimes I have the urge to stare at it, can it hurt my eyes from the infrared radiation, similar to how looking at a regular light bulb can hurt your eyes? I am also interested in how these bulbs work, and the type of infrared radiation they give off if someone can explain it to me.

I have eczema on my eyelid, and have been advised by my GP not to use the prescribed steroid/antibiotic cream for more than a week. What should I be using now to help it heal, and keep the rest of my face happy? Are there any brands/ingredients I should steer clear of? [more inside]

I just had a complicated detached retina repaired. Now my eye doctor has prescribed oral steroids (prednisolone). I don't know how long the overall course is planned to be but I'm tapering down from 60mg/day to 7.5 mg/day over about 8 or 9 weeks, when I see the doctor again.
I'm freaking out about side effects and withdrawal. Please tell me your personal experiences with oral steroids and suggest what I should do (without giving me medical advice).

I use the computer for 16-18 hours a day becasue I have a online business and I have noticed my vision worsening since doing this. I really don't want glasses and have seen a eye doctor who said I don't absolutely need glasses my vision is 20/25 I think he said. I used to have better vision before I spent so much time on the computer. I'm wondering if there any any "techniques" used by OSHA or anything to prevent eyestrain or vision deterioration from excessive computer use .

I have a thing about eating with people. Specifically, one-on-one meals where we're sitting across from each other the whole time. I already find eating in public kind of weird, but then having to make eye contact and talk while doing it compounds the problem and makes me squirmingly awkward, even with close friends. Is there anything I can do to shake this weird anxiety? [more inside]

Sometimes when I'm relaxed, for instance sitting at my computer, I start to lose vision in my left eye. It usually takes the form of a dark "C" or donut around my central vision (e.g. I can see through it to a single word but it covers up most of the web page). If I blink or even move my eye in the slightest, it goes away, returning in a few seconds if I am still relaxed. [more inside]

My understanding is that things like sand or sawdust wash out of the eye easily but things like metal shavings especially steel shavings tend to stick to the eye and wont wash out. Why is this?

For the past two weeks, I've had a big noticeable distracting "floater" right
in the middle of my field of vision in my dominant eye. Since it first showed up, it hasn't moved, grown, shrunk or done anything else exciting. But it's driving me batshit — it's distracting as hell when I try to read, for instance — and I'm vaguely worried it might be a symptom of something nasty. What should I do? Is there anything I can do?

YANMFD... I have a friend who, on Thursday, experienced sharp pains in his left side--he described the location as, "About an inch inside, directly aligned with my underarm". He felt it about 15 times over the course of the day and said it was "sharp and sudden" and caused him to wince and bend over. The next day, he woke up and there was blood in his right eye--not bloodshot, but blood, like a pool. It went away over the course of the day.
He insists these things are not related and won't go to the doctor. As a result, I'm worried. Could these things be connected and what could they be? He's 44. [more inside]

Which animal has the hardest eyes? I was thinking about how eyes are pretty soft and it might be advantageous for a creature to have "natural goggles" protecting its squishy eyes. Which animal's eyes have the toughest coating? (I do not care to hear about the protective qualities of retractable eyeLIDs, only the surface which can not be retracted, and which must be seen through.)

Yesterday or the day before I noticed one of my cats was squinting a little in one eye. Then she started producing thick yellow goop. This morning there was a lot more thick yellow goop. This evening I noticed the nictating membrane of that eye is a little pinker and more swollen than the other one. She is having no trouble breathing and her appetite, thirst, and energy are normal. I don't have a lot of money. How urgent is this situation? [more inside]

I went to a ENT/facial surgeon recently for something unrelated, and I asked the doctor, who also does facial plastic surgery, what I could do about a large vein I have under my right eye. He had me speak with a woman in the office, and she told me, after looking at my vein(s), about a procedure for veins like mine (not spider veins) wherein they inject saline into the vein and then it goes away. What procedure is that? How much does it cost? Do you have a recommendation for a place in Philadelphia, PA? [more inside]

My eye doctor brings in a new second doctor every once in a while, I guess to handle most of the menial check-ups. To my frustration, I have a crush on this current one. I'm due to visit the office one last time in a week or two. What then? YANMD, at least, I hope not. [more inside]

If you lay your forehead on the palm of your hand and look down at your forearm, you get a distorted view of the connection between wrist and forearm, as well as a sort of "ghost" forearm silhouette at the margins. What's this called, why does it happen, and are there any paintings or other art that captures these effects?

Can anyone recommend a good, competent ophthalmologist with a decent bedside manner in Bellingham, WA?
