Help, I have mice.

I am willing to pay to have someone seal up my apartment, but I worry about getting ripped off. Can anyone recommend an exterminator in Brooklyn who did a good job? And how much should I expect to pay to seal up a studio? Also, any recommendations for traps? I absolutely cannot do glue traps. I am not opposed to killing them, but could not handle a trap that might leave them alive but mangled. So, maybe humane traps are the best option for me. Poison is out because of the cat, even though she is completely useless at killing. [more inside]

Exterminators of Metafilter! Halp!

We had the exterior of our house treated for wasps/bees with Dragnet today. As the fellow was spraying around the roof, some of the pesticide dripped into the vent on the top of my window air conditioner. This was about 12 hours ago. Will I or my pets die if I turn on the air conditioner? It's so very hot here in Southern Ontario :(

How do we get rid of mold mites?

We live in a dry climate but have an unventilated bathroom, and have developed a stubborn case of mold mites in the room. Despite cleaning on a regular basis, they keep coming back. I scrubbed the floors, ceiling, walls, and all surfaces with Lysol for three hours on Thursday and somehow this did not completely eradicate them; I saw them appear again today. I'm at my wits end. Getting rid of a (bird) corpse?

I just opened the attic door and discovered at least two, possibly three, dead birds - like, rural style pigeons or something - lying at the bottom of the stairs. Birds don't just lie there generally, so I assume they're dead. I am completely freaking out. What do I do? [more inside]

Apartment and bug filter. Stay or leave?

My, very expensive, new apartment has something management calls box bugs and small, centipede-like black bugs. I don't know the name of this second type, they might be the young? Management has promised to call Terminex but they are adamant this isn't roaches and that as it gets colder, they'll disappear. [more inside]

I would like to not die a horrible death from wasp stings

On my deck, right out my back door, is a small square bench that until recently had a flower pot sitting on it. The flower pot was recently tossed (about a week ago) and last evening, I noticed there were quite a few bees? wasps? in that area of of the deck. Today, it became clear they have MOVED IN. Kill them. Kill them with fire. But which fire and how much?

[NYC-filter] We definitely have bedbugs - no question - and know that we need an exterminator. We will need to pay for it ourselves. What are some good, discreet, effective (preferably inexpensive) NYC exterminators? And how much do they cost, especially for the size of our infestation? Are there any better steps we can take in the meantime to prepare, minimize the infestation size, and lower our costs? [more inside]

Who you gonna call?

We just bought a house where we suspect rat poison was used in the yard. We have two dogs who love getting into stupid mischief. We want to hire someone who will go through the yard with a fine-toothed comb before we move in and find any rat poison that might be there, and remove it. What would this person or business be called? [more inside]

Cat Safety Question

Our apartment complex just sprayed for bugs around the baseboards in the kitchen. I don't know what spray they used, but it's not the kind where they make you empty your cupboards. Is it safe for our cat, Captain Tightpants who is just under a year old, to frolic around, or should he be kept locked in the bathroom for a while? And if so, how long?

I think I may have bed bugs, pics inside!

We caught this bug on my bed and I have a few questions...1) So this is a bed bug right? Google images pretty much answered this question but I'm still hoping somebody's gonna say "no dude, it's something else, totally harmless!" But FYI, we were bitten a few times several weeks ago and just assumed it was unusually persistent mosquitoes. [more inside]

Good exterminator in Twin Cities

Anyone have a recommendation for an exterminator in the Twin Cities area (St. Paul specifically)? Orkin looks like the main game in town, but I'm wary of simply going with the biggest option around just because it's simple. Reviews/defense of Orkin's service are welcome, too! This is for insects, not rodents.

Ants ants everywhere!

Carpenter ants. My wife and I are finally winning the war against sugar ants (thanks to a wonderful product called Terro which works better than our $300 exterminator did), but now we have a carpenter ant infestation. The nest (main nest? will there be multiple nests?) is located in some rotten 2x6 boards framing our raised beds in the garden. However, their current ant highway leads to a vent under the house. Any of you Mefites have carpenter ant experience? What worked? What didn't? Do we need a professional? If they're foraging under the house, does that mean they've probably already set up a colony there? I hate ants. I hate them, I hate them, I hate them, I hate them, I hate them.
