I usually navigate my Windows 7 Explorer windows via keyboard. I type the name of a directory, then hit enter to open it. But when the new directory comes up, typing finds the first filename alphabetically, which would be fine if I had my directories sorted by file name, but I do not - they're sorted by file type instead. Once a file is selected after typing the first letter, Windows's selection continues looking in the display order (first by type then alphabetically) but does not wrap to the beginning of the directory, so if I was trying to select a folder and ended up with a file, then I either have to click in the window or wait a few seconds and hit Home to get to the start of the window. How do I change this so it will initially give preference to file type and not just file names?

I'm trying to come up with some quirky actions that a survivalist or adventurer might do in the wilderness, actions which might seem odd or random to the uninformed but are actually useful, clever or at least have a specific function which is not immediately obvious. For example, rubbing an unknown berry's juices on one's skin. If you don't know that this is a method to tell whether the fruit is poisonous, it might seem like a wacky thing to do. Once you know WHY someone is doing it, you realize it isn't nutty at all. What are some other examples?

I need to move an apartment's worth of things from Seattle to Dallas, including a vehicle. A U-Haul 5'x8' trailer would be awesome but they don't rent to Ford Explorer drivers. I have a Ford Explorer. There don't appear to be any other trailer rental companies in the Seattle area. Are there any other options? Less than $500 would be great--the U-Haul trailer I can't have is $321--but I'm open to all ideas that are somewhere in the ballpark.

Is there any an easy way to get Internet Explorer to redirect internal network links through a different IP address? For technical reasons that are not clear to me, we've been unable to access links to a client's Sharepoint site. However, we've found that if we change the "sharepoint" part of the address to a specific IP address, it works fine. (http://sharepoint/menu to http://1.2.34.56/menu).
Is there a way to get Internet Explorer to automatically resolve the link through the IP address? I tried changing the system host file but that only seems to work for whole domains. Googling turned up a Firefox extension but unfortunately I'm stuck in IE. Please help!
Thanks!

I like to use the Favorites bar in IE8 and IE9 for frequently accessed web sites, such as iGoogle, Google Mail, Google Reader, and (of course) Ask Metafilter. I like the favicons that appear there, but, for some reason, the Gmail favicon always appears as the generic, IE website icon. See image link
here. I've tried everything I can think of to make it look "nice" like the others, but it always looks like this, even on other computers with the Favorites linked through Xmarks. Why is this and can anyone offer a solution? Thanks!

How can I turn a long list of hyperlinks into either a list of filenames in Windows Explorer or a list of Favorites in Internet Explorer? Say I have 1,000 hyperlinks in a list so it is 1,000 entries long (could be in an Excel file, a Word file, or on a web page). I want to have these 1,000 hyperlinks as Favorites, which seems to be the same as converting them from the content of one file to the file names of 1,000 files. I can manually save each hyperlink as the name of a file, but if there are 1,000, and if they need to be updated every week, that would be a killer. I need an automated solution.

Webbrowsing/Internet Explorer 6 Filter:
When reading a long webpage(usually several screen lengths), I often click on a link that's part way down. IE goes to that webpage in the same window(as it should). However, when I click back, I often find that I am at the top of the first page.
I'm pretty sure it always used to scroll down to where I was before I clicked on the link. Now it only does that sometimes. I know this is minor, but it bugs me sometimes. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
