How long would a simple homemade dipping sauce made of soy sauce, olive oil, sesame oil and a whack of fresh garlic last in the fridge? I ask because I made a massive batch of potstickers over the weekend and froze them. I expect to be unable to resist their deliciousness and eat them all over the next 2-3 weeks. I like to eat them with the dipping sauce I make, but I don't want to have to remake it every time, especially since it gets better the longer it sits. And because I am lazy.

So how long would a little jar of soy sauce, olive oil, sesame oil, and sliced/crushed fresh garlic stay edible?

PatentFilter

PatentFilter: When das a patent expire? PatentFilter: When das a patent expire, assuming the company always pays the maintaining fees?

AFAIK it is 20 years. Not we have 3 dates on the patent:

1. Foreign filling date (priority date)
2. US filling date
3. Date of patent

1st is the oldest date, 3. the youngest.
Specific questions:
* After how many years does the patent expire?
* What is the relevant date out of the three?

Thx Yoyo

Travel dates in the months before passport expiration

My U.S. passport expires 13 Oct 08 and I need to book one international trip before then: leaving New York 17 July 08, returning 2 Aug 08 (one destination country, a non-EU-member in Eastern Europe, plus stops for flight transfers in one or two EU member countries). Is it even worth researching various countries' and airlines' how-close-to-expiration-date safety ranges for travel, or should I just assume I MUST renew my passport before then?

Passport emergency!

Passport emergency! My passport expires in February but I've got two international trips ahead of me. In one month I'm going to be in Peru and at the end of December I'll be in Germany. Previously I was told that the closeness of the expiration date of my passport wasnt a big deal. That turned out to not be true. It turns out that the Germans wont let me into the country with a soon to expire passport and no one is sure about the Peruvians.

I see two choices:

1. Renew now and take a chance on missing/rescheduling Peru.

2. Try to go to Peru and renew when I get back.

Option one leaves me 4 weeks to get a renewal. Is this possible with the recent craziness at the passport office? Or should I attempt to go to Peru and hope they dont care too much?

I'm leaning towards number one and applying tomorrow morning.

Eep. Domain name expired (gmail flagged warning as spam!) and I've already got a squatter. :( So it just expired literally 2 days ago. I'm looking at the notice now. I thought I had like 60 days or something? Help?

I've got lots of work into this domain (I've got backups, of course), but I've got a successful adwords campaign and everything...suggestions?

Domain was registered at namepcheap, if that matters.

Should I believe my refrigerator?

Should I believe my refrigerator? I have a refrigerator with a water tap and ice maker. It has a filter that costs about $50 to replace. The filter directions say to do so at least every six months. And a light saying it's time to replace it comes on in about six months. I use this water, but not a lot. Does anybody know if it is ok to simply change it once a year? And whether the light is simply a six month clock or actually measures something like water flow or filter degradation? I'm tempted to just go by taste, but then I noted in one metafilter discussion someone suggested that for sink type water filters, bacteria starts growing on them in a few weeks.... And, while we're at it, I also use a Pur pitcher filter, that has a little orange thingy that moves around a slot until the filter is expired. And I dutifully replace it then. Is this necessary, or can I just go by taste here too. My tap water is perfectly safe and clean, a little high on minerals and doesn't taste as good as the filtered water. Thanks.

Expiring Domain Name Help

I'm interested in buying an expiring domain name (currently it's in redemption period). Most of the info I've found is vague, outdated, or doesn't answer my specific questions. Help me strategize! The name is made up of two short common English words which in combination make a very uncommonly-used phrase. It's not similar to any business or geographical name that I can think of. I know it's hard to assess the value of a domain based on just this info but I include it in case it's helpful.

I've read this extremely helpful post so I'm familiar with all domain-snatching services. The whole system sounds awfully shady -- not only during the auction process but after, when it comes time to transfer the domain to your preferred registrar and host. So I'd like to minimize my involvement in it while maximizing my chances to get the name (at the lowest price, of course).

The domain is currently with Dotster and, FWIW, I am currently have a handful of other domains registered with them. They say they release their names "exclusively" to namewinner.com first -- but if they offer any guarantees, I sure can't find them. Should I enlist the services of other domain snatchers as well? Or should I forget it all and go it alone?

How do I stop Windows filesharing passwords from expiring?

How do I stop passwords from expiring in my home Windows XP / Linux (Samba) network? I have file sharing working reasonably well from my Linux box to Windows XP. Linux is running Debian/Testing with Samba. But every two weeks someone decides my password is no good anymore and I have to change it. When I open the fileshare I encounter a dialog demanding I change my password. The change password dialog does not work. I can fake it out by logging into the Linux box and running smbpasswd, but that's a nuisance. Who is deciding the password expired and, more importantly, how do I turn it off?

While I'm here, I'd be grateful for pointers to a good online reference for configuring Windows filesharing. I've got the basic Linux/Windows thing working but I still can't share files between Windows boxes on my network. Is there something that explains all about domains and hosts and Windows network security without requiring a 10 hour course in network hell?

Who's eating my Firefox cookies?

Firefox question: Why do my cookies for sites such as the Washington Post or New York Times keep disappearing? I can not say for sure, but it seems time related - if I do not visit the site in a few weeks all of a sudden it is asking for my login info. Is there some way to prevent this?
