I've been enjoying the Emmy-winning High Rise
online documentary project and things like the Hackney Hear
geo-locative app - looking for recommendations of other cool experiments in the realm of storytelling. Film, online, audio - whatever! Just NEW and DIFFERENT. Level Two request: recommendations of websites or blogs that discuss or review these sorts of projects - I just want to keep up with this sort of thing! Thanks all!

Torture by the CIA, specifically experimental/psychological torture, between about 1955 and 1985: how much more would CIA-funded lab psychologist Donald Hebb
have known about specific real-world practices/pervasiveness than the general public could know? Articles or books where I can research this (especially anything he wrote himself)?

I recently picked up Sam Prekop's latest album, Old Punch Card
, expecting something at least akin to his previous solo albums and work in The Sea & Cake. Instead I got this
, and this
, and this
—and it's blowing my mind. What else can you tell me about experimental electronica 'music' that goes BLEEP BLOOP FIZZZ HUSSSSSSSSSSHHHH BOOM in no discernible order?

You work hard at something and end up creating a piece of art that you consider powerful, moving, possibly even groundbreaking, something that people should be talking about. Then you share it with your friends and some portions of the internet, and no one responds or seems to care. What conclusions do you come to? [more inside]

I remember a college professor telling me about a book, probably Latin American, possibly magical realism, in which the table of contents could be shuffled around according to some provided lists, and the book re-read accordingly, acquiring new meanings and interpretations with each shuffle. What is it called? Also welcome: suggestions for novels with a similar style or feeling, or which play with the medium in a similar way (I've already read House of Leaves).

I have the opportunity this October to travel to three cities in Europe (Glasgow, London and Berlin) and am searching for microcinemas or arts organizations in these three cities that might be interested in hosting a screening of shorts by NW experimental filmmakers and video artists.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thx [more inside]

I'm looking for film recommendations. Films (of any length) that use approach their subject matter in abstract or otherwise unusual ways. Some of my favorites in that vein are Koyaanisqatsi
, Outside In
, Powers of 10
, Gantz Graf
, Der Lauf Der Dinge
, C'etait un Rendezvous
, Fast, Cheap, and out of Control
, and The Fourth Dimension
. Things like this
that, in their own weird way, impart some understanding. Bonus points for no dialog.

Avantgarde London: I want to take my girlfriend out to a biggish music/sound performance/event. I want it to be avantgarde, unexpected and unique - the kind of night that would send most music lovers screaming into the distance. I am thinking maybe opera, but I know NOTHING about it. And, as I said, I want avantgarde
opera in London
. Where do I start? [more inside]

Experimental baking filter: I got this crazy idea to make martini-flavored cookies for a friend's birthday but I'm not sure how to go about it. After pondering over a couple different methods, I'm wondering if it's a doomed idea, as so much of the martini essence is in the alcohol which would cook off during baking. [more inside]

I'm trying to remember information about an experimental film, possibly Russian, most likely from the first half of the 20th century, and neither google nor my memory are offering much help. The key element is that the artist built something like a tripod, but with the capability of full, spherical rotation of the camera, 360 degrees around all possible axes. [more inside]

A while back I stumbled across an "open source" band, an umbrella name that allowed anyone to perform as that band, but I cannot for the life of me remember it. I think it was primarily an experimental noise act, but at this point I can't be sure. Please, Metafilter, help me find it!

Remember that MASH episode that was entirely filmed from the perspective of the wounded soldier? He couldn't talk, but he could nod, and when he nodded the camera would nod, like you were looking out his eyes. I'm wondering if there have been any films created from a 1st person perspective. During the first few years of MTV's late Sunday night show '120 minutes' (1986-2003) it was followed by a show of experimental videos. Usually these would be devoted to some theme. The show lasted about a half an hour in length and was, I believe, an English product.
Does anyone know what this show was called and anything about its history, current availability, and or producers?
