I'm looking to work in/maybe move to, a country where same-sex marriage is legal and gay people are treated equally. Any recommendations? Any advice from expatriates?
I've been in a committed and loving relationship with my partner for over 6 years. Looking forward, I would like to move to a country where I can get married, live, work, raise a family and be openly gay in a country with as much respect from the law and the community as everyone else. I'm 32, have $60K in the bank, no debts, few personal attachments, and mad computer programming skills. I would like to move to another country for a year or two, where I can live economically off my savings, improve my programming skills, and start a number of web/software projects that will hopefully be the Next Big Thing. Where should I go? [more inside]

Help me to create a list of possible countries to explore expatriating myself and family to if i am fed up with life in these united states, and think the prospects of things improving here are slim to none.
May be eligible for UK citizenship based on parents.
I realize the possibilities are extensive , so help me to narrow down ahe list based on questions that might best define my preferences and possibilities

Are there any "Americatowns" or "Little New Yorks"? I mean, are there any neighborhoods outside the U.S. that are known for having a sizable American expatriate/emigrant population and culture? I'm not talking about tourist ghettos in popular vacation spots. Nor am I interested in discussing the many American businesses and aspects of American culture that have spread outside the U.S. I just want to know if there are neighborhoods of non-American cities where a sizable, cohesive community of Americans live and work.

What countries would you consider the safest and free-est places on Earth to live? Personal freedom, rule of law and access to modern technology a plus. Lower cost of living than in the U.S. a double plus.

French Citizenship or Residence
I am a United States citizen who is looking to move to France. I am currently living in the Republic of Ireland but I am finding it harder and harder to maintain legal residence (even though, my mother is remarried to an Irishman and my ancestry is Irish) It seems you either have to be offered a contract for employment or be a student to stay here. I HEARD that requirements for French citizenship or permanent residence were more lenient. Does anyone have any information on this. I am NOT "highly skilled" in the slightest, unless you consider fixing PCs and Macs a skill.
