Why am I having leg, ankle and foot pains when I walk and jog?

I recently started a mix of walking and jogging for an hour a day, to help me lose weight. I'm about a hundred pounds overweight and until now have been pretty sedentary. Since I started walking and jogging, I've had aching, tight pains in my shins, ankles and heels. What could be causing this? Is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening? [more inside]

Are there Risks to Moving a PreCor 5.31 Eliptical to Another Room?

The PreCor 5.31 is balanced with magnets, and doesn't seem to have any wheels. It's behind my desk right now, and we redid a room on the same floor I want to move it to. I'm worried that, since it doesn't seem to be built to move around, there might be an issue with taking it across the house. Anyone know of risks? Do I need to contact my dealer?

Nausea or vertigo when exercising?

I recently started exercising for the first time ever (in my early 30's) by joining a gym and trying out their HIIT classes. They're really hard but I'm doing it. I'm running into some problems that only occur with certain exercises, and I'm wondering if there could be an underlying cause. [more inside]

"Do I look fat?" No... (yes!!)

My husband sometimes asks me, "Do I look fat?" The answer is yes, but I don't know how to say "yes." Should I tell him the truth? Here's the context: For several years he has been hitting the gym hard. 5x/week at Crossfit, and currently in training for his third marathon. He went from a skinny, twiggy guy to a mass of muscle. He looks great, feels great, is healthy (we are vegan but do drink lots of beer on the weekends)... but as his muscles have grown, his belly has, too. It's big and looks fatty, even though the rest of him is muscly. [more inside]

Just joined a gym for the first time in a while, looking to get healthy

I used to have a high activity job that kept me in pretty good shape without needing a gym. Over the past few years I stopped doing that job on a regular basis and instead became much more sedentary while not eating less (factually: probably more). I've gained wait within that time, and have decided that I want to become more healthy by adding exercise back into my life. However, since I've never needed a gym before I have no idea what to do with my gym membership. Specifics inside. [more inside]

Should I Join a Gym?

I'm trying to exercise more, mostly for reasons like getting my appetite up and sleeping better -- I don't have any "fitness goals," this is more about making exercise part of my routine. In the past, I would just go running outside, but I've never kept up with it well and summer in DC is not the best time for running outside (swampy, "code red" days, etc). Should I try to commit to running outside and doing my usual "weight baring" exercises at home, or should I join a gym? [more inside]

Rope jumping overdose?

Hypothetically, what would happen if one were to jump rope for 10 minutes of every hour of the working day, i.e. 10 minutes of rope jumping x8 every day, separated by 50-60 minutes of sitting at the desk. I'm looking for good and bad here. Would it kill your knees? Do wonders for your legs? Do not have much more effect than if you were to jump for only 10 minutes 3 times a week?

Getting into Shape

Does anyone have any suggestions for working out and dieting that has worked for them? Although I do not have any health problems (knock on wood), I would really like to get into shape. I typically use the elliptical at the health club and I enjoy running out side except I tend to get shin splints. Not sure whether anyone has any book recommendations that helped motivate them? I can't stand how I feel and look as of late, so I need to do something drastic. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Need to exercise. Low motivation. Low willpower. Ideas?

What are some good ways to get into a modest exercise routine when you know that you lack motivation and willpower and will likely want to quit after one day? Anything from a lifehacker-y website/app/bracelet gadget that somehow guilts/encourages/blackmails you, to a person who shows up at your apartment and drags you to the gym. I live alone in Manhattan. I suffer from depression - I see a therapist and I take medication (one of the major side effects of the medication is weight gain, unfortunately). I'm not really looking for mental tricks to GET willpower - I've read posts about this - I'm looking for ways to exercise given the fact that I have very little willpower.

While working out tonight, I walked/ran for 15 minutes on the treadmill and started to warm up with light weights (one set of overhead barbell press). Turning the corner on 50 (pounds down)

In the past year or so, I’ve lost 46 lbs - which was 25% of my body weight. I have a goal to lose 5-10 lbs more, which would put me at a little over 50 lbs gone - and a coincidentally good zone for my size. I’d like to do, have, or make something to commemorate those 50 lbs. Not a reward - but I want to have something in my home, maybe on shelf somewhere, that I can look at as a visual reminder of that number and the work I put in for it. [more inside]

Exercise video recommendations for lame 30-somethings with sore backs?

I'm looking for a couple good exercise videos that will help me increase my core strength and then hopefully alleviate my lower back pain. My abs have been weak ever since I had a baby, and now that said baby is a 25 pound squirming mass of toddler muscle, I have pretty chronic back pain from constantly picking him up and hauling him around. I'm looking for a video that I can do in my basement after the kiddo goes to bed, and one that requires minimal equipment. I've taken pilates classes in the past and liked it - yoga was always kind of boring to me, but I'm willing to try it out again. The DVD selections at my local library trend toward senior citizen chair exercise videos, so any specific video recommendations would be much appreciated. [more inside]
