What's your favourite dance workout?

I love workout DVDs, but often HATE the music they have in them. I get especially annoyed when the instructor isn't even moving to the beat, so imagine my joy when I discovered Zumba a couple of weeks ago! I don't have a regular schedule, so can't really guarantee that I'll be able to attend classes, so I think I'll be exercising in my small living room. What other DVDs or styles of fun and intense dancey workout things should I try? Bonus points for something that burns off a lot in a short amount of time.

What have you been wrong about, realized it, and it changed your life?

What have you been wrong about, realized it, and it changed your life? I remember reading Albert Ellis' wonderful self-help book A Guide to Rational Living where he gives a great list of irrational and self-defeating beliefs that people have. Among these beliefs was the importance people placed on other's opinion of them as well the emphasis people placed on being perfectionistic in their own lives. Much of this underlies Cognitive Behavioral Therapy but the effect is even more prevalent than that. We all have had beliefs that have held us back, and I'm curious as to what things you once believed that were holding you back in your personal or professional life. Anything will do. It can be anything from knowing the importance of making good first impressions to the need for keeping oneself physically fit even when one doesn't want to. I'm looking to see whether I share of any of these traits or not. So what are the beliefs that have held you back or others that you know?

Help me figure out a sustainable exercise and nutrition routine

I used to exercise a lot, generally violent sports like rugby or boxing, but several years ago I got injured and two years ago I got pregnant and I haven't really done much since. I really want to figure out how to get back on the horse -- and while I'm at it eat a little better -- but every time I try to just think about it, the many layers of interacting constraints exhaust me. I'd really appreciate help thinking through these, or ideas about what might work. [more inside]

Fun/rewarding exercise with a focus on controlled movement?

I've never thought of myself as being in good shape, but lately I've noticed that I'm not just weak or slow, I'm also pretty uncoordinated. Now that I see it just I keep seeing it everywhere in my life, and it really bothers me. My movements are pretty twitchy and momentum-based, rather than being deliberate, something I could stop in the middle of at any moment. I want to fix this. When I think of activities that could help me develop that kind of control, I think of like martial arts, or yoga, or something, but I don't really know. I'd love to hear some suggestions. Yet another workout app question

GymAppFilter: My trainer made me a sort of mix-and-match table of exercises so that I can work out on my own. Basically, I pick one exercise each from 2 or 3 columns, do them in a circuit 3 times. Then pick more exercises. There are about 5-6 exercises in each column. I have Cardio, Legs, Arms, Abs/Core, Chest, Shoulders. Cardio can go with anything. The Shoulder stuff also involves Legs and Chest also (lunges with presses, for example), so he recommended I not pair Legs with Shoulders and Chest. Everything else can go together. [more inside]

Exercise Bands recommendation

I know that not all exercise bands are made the same. I want to get some while traveling and snowed in to do curls, pushups, squats, etc along with body weight workouts. I am not expecting a super workout but do want some decent bang for my buck. Can anyone recommend any less than $50? I would be happy with a set or buying individual bands. Amazon gets good reviews for these, but am open to your suggestions. If the info is the same as this 2010 AskMefi post, feel free to let me know.

Maintaining fitness and sanity on a low-calorie diet

I'm an overweight (technically obese) triathlete who was recently put on a calorie-restricted (1200-1400/day), moderately carb-restricted (100-130 g/day) diet by my doctor(s). They also have me front-loading my calories into breakfast and lunch at the expense of dinner. It's been hard on me in various ways, physically and psychologically -- my training is suffering, and I really miss being able to share a normal dinner with my partner. I'm also on seriously non-optional medication that makes it hard for me to lose weight and, relatedly, has probably made me insulin-resistant. Help me cope. How does a 20 yr old healthyish student get back in shape without dying?

The fact I never liked the "traditional" forms of exercise never bothered me before. Fitness gizmo for swimming

Trying to find the perfect birthday present for my husband, and I'd really like to get him something like my Fitbit Flex, as we are both working on being more active and losing some weight. However, his major form of exercise is pretty hardcore Masters swimming; I'd love a gadget that will track his swimming plus all the other activity in a day-chasing kids, playing soccer, walking, etc. Any thoughts? Any experience with the new Misfit Shine, for instance?

Help Me Put Exercise In My Exercise So I Can Workout While I Workout

Thanks to following the advice from some previous AskMeFi threads, I have finally gotten back into a regular workout routine. I am still working to find a set of exercises I can alternate between that make the best use of the time I have and that I do not dread doing. I've found that I really appreciate exercises that work multiple parts of the body simultaneously (I think it keeps me from focusing on how unpleasant the strain on any one body part is), especially ones that work my core without having to do situps. For example, squats combined with overhead press. Googling hasn't been that fruitful. What are some other exercises or combination of exercises that I can use to maximize my workout? I do not have a gym membership, but I have a good set of free weights and resistance bands at my disposal.

I've also begun to run as well and even though I know it is good for him, I always balk, delay, or procrastinate when I know I should do it. After exercising I feel great. Awesome. Amazing. How to keep my hair dry while swimming?

My mid back length hair is very thick and is color treated. I've been thinking about lap swimming for exercise, but how can I manage my hair? I usually wash it once a week, do not use hair dryers and like to let it air dry. It usually takes several hours for my hair to air dry, which is fine for once a week, but I can't imagine having wet hair 5 days a week. Another concern is the chlorine effecting the dark blonde color and turning it green. A swim cap would be logical, but my research shows they are not waterproof. How did you get so toned? I have no idea...

I want to tone up a bit. I'm female, 30yrs, very satisfied with my weight and overall body shape. I've always been on the thin side and eat pretty healthy so I'm not looking to lose weight or improve my lifestyle. I have a lot going on right now so I don't want to commit to the gym or an exercise regimen. I just want to get toned by doing things here and there in my normal day to day life. I'm looking for ideas that I can do when I do other things, such as squats when I brush my teeth, or push ups in the ad breaks when I watch TV. Arm curls with cans of soup while waiting for the pasta to cook , that kind of thing. I'm not very creative in a fitness sense, so please help me brainstorm and get toned!

Dealing with muscle soreness when returning to jogging

I have just ramped up my exercise a little, adding some intermittent jogging to my long walks (I'm every other day, or every third day). It has been several years since I did any sort of running more than an occasional dash to catch the bus, and my quadriceps are sore. Searching online, I have found advice that ranges from "do not do any more exercise until your muscles are no longer sore" to "power through no matter what!" MeFi, what should I do to mitigate muscle soreness and keep myself in good shape so I can keep exercising?
