What factors affect energy levels for exercise?

Sometimes when I exercise I feel full of energy. Other days, I feel weak and a little nauseous. This happens even when I get a good amount of sleep every night (7-8 hrs), and even when I've eated a good breakfast (say, oatmeal or cereal) an hour before exercising. What factors affect energy, especially during exercise? What does it take to get that bubbling, bursting, "I can conquer the world" energy every day?

Food Log suggestions?

I'm looking for suggestions on where and how to keep a food log. I have a number of criteria that, I think will help me keep it up. 1. I'd like it to be online. 2. I'd like it to have some database of foods. 3. I'd like to it show trends, at least a weekly goal thingy. 4. I'd like to it to offer easy ways to update the log. 5. I'd pay for it. Free would be great, but ... I have a diet that I am already using that contains goals -- calories, carbs, protein, etc., -- all based on BMI and activity levels. A bonus question would be stories about how you managed to keep it up for yourself. :-)

Can I apply exercise calories to the next day?

When one is dieting by maintaining a small calorie deficit, is it appropriate to apply calories burned via one day's exercise to the next day's calorie total? Since I can't predict beforehand what days I'll have an opportunity to exercise, I can't plan ahead. Since I exercise rather late in the evening, binging the amount of calories after I return (directly before bed) would probably send 'em directly to my waist regardless of how much I'd just exercised. Can I turn my parents from couch potatoes into spring chickens?

Both my parents are mad, Scottish and retired. They're 65 and 68, and weren't brought up in a culture of exercise. Now that they don't have a dog, they're terrifyingly sedentary. How will I ever get my fitness back after two years of major respiratory problems?

Can I rebuild my lung capacity? And how? In the past two years, I have gone from being a high-level aerobic athlete - one to three hours daily of bike riding or running - to doing almost nothing. The reason? Respiratory problems. It started with asthma, went on to sinus infections, then two cases of pneumonia. I've had two sinus surgeries in the past six months. Save me from last.fm embarrassment!

Recommend me some music to run to. HerniaFilter II

I was just diagnosed with an inguinal hernia, which I've apparently had for almost 2 years now. I know next to nothing about hernias, let alone inguinal hernias, and it looks like it'll be 6-12 weeks before I can get into surgery, and at least 3 weeks before I get a proper consult with the surgeon. I exercise frequently with weight training, cardio, and flexibility training in the gym, and am wondering what if any exercises are safe to continue in the interim, or what exercises definitely need to be avoided. Can I still stay in shape without making this thing worse? [more inside]

Book or Web Recommendations for Using Gym Equipment

I've been a member of gym now for the last few months. I've gotten some training on some of the myriad of machines at the place, but I'd like to know more about using them in-depth. Can anyone recommend good books or web sites that focus on the various exercises you can do and/or exercise machines you can work out with at a gym? P.S.: am not much interested in a *lot* of heavy weight-lifting using barbels and such, just mostly the other devices.

Seeking data about the health effects of dieting for non-overweight people interested in moderate weight loss.

Is there data about moderate weight loss for the relatively thin? For example, we all know that yo-yo dieting is bad, etc., etc. But is there any data about whether it's bad for a not-overweight person to gain five pounds every winter and then lose it every spring? It seems like all the healthy eating and weight loss stuff I read is based on studies of fat people.

Exercise with Quick Rewards, Encourages Exploration & Discovery?

What kind of exercise would I find most fun & rewarding? I like baking. I like computers. I like debate. I like learning in a scatterbrain, whatever-interests-me-at-the-moment way. I like, in short, interactive, iterative activities that reward exploration and self-learning, and that start giving (at least small) rewards very quickly. Don't like group learning or scheduled lessons, and don't want to have to depend on a partner to show up. Need something that can be done on a regular basis. Thanks.
