I’m settling in for a long winter, and I’m going to miss shooting baskets. I can’t afford gym access. I do have a treadmill and free weights, but they get boring. I’m looking for an exercise I can do inside my apartment that will encourage me to hone a skill or is otherwise (individually) competitive. Aerobics aren’t what I’m looking for. One day, I’d like to try Dance Dance Revolution when I can afford the hardware. So, is there another interesting, cheap indoor activity for my fine motor skills? Actually improving my physical fitness from this is of marginal importance.

Where can a person rent an elliptical exercise machine (e.g. Precor) in New York City? I'm interested in getting a high quality elliptical machine for home use, but I'm concerned about the cost and my relative lack of self-motivation. I don't want to spend $2000+ on a machine that I use five times then ignore. I'd rather rent for a while until I'm sure it works for me. I need something at home -- gym membership is not an option.
Is there any company that will rent me an elliptical machine by the month, and deliver to my apartment in Manhattan?

I-know-you-aren't-a-doctor-but-filter: I have been exercising for two years...I go to the gym four or five times a week and take a LOT of spin classes-I'm in pretty good shape. At the end of one class this week my chest started hurting (more inside) [more inside]

Why is it that some days when I exercise and get sweaty, the sweat stings my face and eyes very badly while other (most) days the sting is very slight or nonexistent? It doesn't seem to correlate to whether or not I've just shaved (this wouldn't account for the eye sting anyway).

Is there a (silent) exercise machine that an office or cubical worker can use to exercise their legs while working at the computer. Not like a thighmaster, or rubber bands, but something more like a step-stair or cycle or similar system under the desk. [more inside]

In what ways is exercise bad for you? The wife recently made it clear that she wishes that I would start exercising more, and I don't particularly want to. Various reasons I gave (that I'd probably actually gain weight, might get muscly, I smoke a lot, etc.) didn't work. There's got to be a valid reason out there somewhere. If it helps, I have an arrythmia and asthma.

So I'm overweight, have been my entire life with a couple of exceptions. I'm 6'5" and around 290 lbs. Which actually isn't as bad as it sounds, even at my skinniest (post-military) I have a 50" chest. But I'm still pretty out of shape and would like to fix that.

I want to cultivate some good mental exercising habits. For that, I need some good, diverse sources for puzzles and activities. Specifically, I'm looking for, preferably free, sites with a decent database of verbal, logical, spatial, lateral thinking games. The format can be flexible, so crosswords are included. Also, games that test and hone reflexes and reactions are also welcome. Additionally, ADHDers are also advised to stimulate the cerebellum. Any help on that? Basically, I'd like a list of resources for complete brain workout, that can be performed atleast once every day. Obviously, I'm not looking for one site to include all of the above.

I am recovering from a three month virus/cold/minor hit to my immune system that aggravated both my asthma and Sparky the Mystery Muscle Disorder. I've seen a doc for this. I've just finished a run of antibiotics (Zithromax) a couple weeks ago, and have also just finished a month-long run of prednisone to treat the asthma. Consequently, I haven't exercised, and now I feel like a sloth.
I'm also laid off from my job for the next 100 days. Financially, I am OK for the duration, and that includes paying for COBRA, so I don't have to get another job right away. I'm also in Seattle, which has beautiful summers. So, I have this time to try to get back into shape and start exercising again. [more inside]

I do a lot of hill hiking in hot weather, up and down on both paved and unpaved trails. I have a high arch and underpronate. How can I zero in on some good trail shoes? I don't want full-fledged hiking boots, just cushioned trail runners with toe & sole protection for the pebbly & stony parts.
