Why does sustained exercise sometimes make me very unwell for hours or even days? I lift heavy weights at the gym three times a week with no problems, I get enough sleep, I eat very healthily (but perhaps my intake is low on carbs like bread, pasta or rice). But every now and then, when I do a sustained cardio type exercise for about an hour or a little more (playing a sport, taking occasional breaks for water, etc), I start to feel fatigued before everyone else does, then I feel extremely sick to the point of having to sit down, not wanting to move. In extreme cases, I've been unwell for more than two entire days after.

I'm 22, male, 184 centimeters (~6ft), 70kg (161 pounds), 11% body fat (as judged by one of those imprecise electrical gadgets), and, until recently, fairly sedentary. I'm now running three times a week and plan to start lifting weights another three days a week. For the past two weeks I've been assiduously tracking everything I eat with
this software (
note: I'm not at all interested in "caloric restriction") and a gram-precise food scale. I'm trying to become generally fit - increase cardiovascular endurance, gain muscle, start fencing again. With all that in mind, how do I decide on nutritional targets?

What do you eat/drink (in addition to water) after a workout to help you recover more quickly? I keep reading suggestions that chocolate milk is the perfect recovery beverage, but I'm lactose intolerant and the idea of drinking straight milk makes my blood run cold.

I need software that will track my nutritional intake. It would track calories, carbs, protean, fats and keep them in a date base for reference. It should have a good sized date base of foods already in it and be able to have new ones added. This is for a pre-intel Mac preferably, or online if need by. Free or cheap would make me happy.

The more I work out, the more I realize that nutrition has a huge impact on my energy. When is the best time to eat various foods during the day so I have the most energy when I get to the gym at 5:30 p.m.? And how can I meet my nutritional needs, given that I'm a vegetarian who likes less-processed foods but doesn't have a lot of time for cooking (and can't handle eating beans every day)? I feel like I need a lot more protein all of a sudden.

This is a tangent on the various posts asking about how getting a six-pack stomach. I'm 5'10' and 155 lbs and once and for all, I want to get rid of my slight beer gut and get a flat stomach (any pack would be a welcome bonus). I know that it's all about dieting/nutrition and exercising. I have the exercising thing down, but I have no clue about nutrition. Without giving me intake percentages or confusing me with omega fructose 3 fatty acid stuff, what should I eat to make my stomach flat?
