Bluetooth headphone recommendations for running?

I'm looking for a new set of headphones to wear while running and I'm interested in trying Bluetooth. I want to still be able to hear the world around me as I do most of my running on the road. Track/volume controls would be nice to have. Can any of you recommend something you've had a good experience with? [more inside]

It's the small-space fitness challenge!

I need to develop a balanced daily workout for the next six months, specifically designed for limited and somewhat unusual spaces. Assume I have no access to traditional weights or fitness machines of any kind and that level ground and traditional cardio options will be at a premium. What 10 exercises can I do to approximate a whole-body workout? [more inside]

Need to exercise. Low motivation. Low willpower. Ideas?

What are some good ways to get into a modest exercise routine when you know that you lack motivation and willpower and will likely want to quit after one day? Anything from a lifehacker-y website/app/bracelet gadget that somehow guilts/encourages/blackmails you, to a person who shows up at your apartment and drags you to the gym. I live alone in Manhattan. I suffer from depression - I see a therapist and I take medication (one of the major side effects of the medication is weight gain, unfortunately). I'm not really looking for mental tricks to GET willpower - I've read posts about this - I'm looking for ways to exercise given the fact that I have very little willpower.

How do I get fit while I get sick?

I want to get fit because it would help my health long-term, but exercising more than a gentle walk makes me sick short-term, so I am stuck. I have specific restrictions on what I can do because of stroke risks, and expect to continue to frequently fall ill. I would like new ideas and especially advice from others with chronic illnesses that fluctuate on how they handle exercise. [more inside]

Shopping for a Gym. What do I look for?

After a year of half-assed solo weight lifting. I've decided to take the green's advice and tie my fitness to a specific activity. I'm thinking of joining a rock climbing/crossfit gym in my area. I've never been a member of a gym before (except during college), and I don't really know what to look out for and pay attention to while checking it out during the free trial. [more inside]

Stomach crunches: more quickly, or fewer but holding them?

Is it better (in terms of muscle building) to do a large number of stomach crunches quickly without pausing at the 'up' part of each crunch, or fewer but pausing and holding the muscles tensed for a few seconds with each crunch?

Help me figure out a sustainable exercise and nutrition routine

I used to exercise a lot, generally violent sports like rugby or boxing, but several years ago I got injured and two years ago I got pregnant and I haven't really done much since. I really want to figure out how to get back on the horse -- and while I'm at it eat a little better -- but every time I try to just think about it, the many layers of interacting constraints exhaust me. I'd really appreciate help thinking through these, or ideas about what might work. [more inside]

Fun/rewarding exercise with a focus on controlled movement?

I've never thought of myself as being in good shape, but lately I've noticed that I'm not just weak or slow, I'm also pretty uncoordinated. Now that I see it just I keep seeing it everywhere in my life, and it really bothers me. My movements are pretty twitchy and momentum-based, rather than being deliberate, something I could stop in the middle of at any moment. I want to fix this. When I think of activities that could help me develop that kind of control, I think of like martial arts, or yoga, or something, but I don't really know. I'd love to hear some suggestions. How does a 20 yr old healthyish student get back in shape without dying?

The fact I never liked the "traditional" forms of exercise never bothered me before. That is, until it recently dawned on me activities like going to the gym or running might be the only options I have left. But, with sensitive knees and shins from growing quickly and the residual effects of childhood asthma still occasionally inhibiting my ability to do cardio, these activities seem more foreign than ever. Fitness gizmo for swimming

Trying to find the perfect birthday present for my husband, and I'd really like to get him something like my Fitbit Flex, as we are both working on being more active and losing some weight. However, his major form of exercise is pretty hardcore Masters swimming; I'd love a gadget that will track his swimming plus all the other activity in a day-chasing kids, playing soccer, walking, etc. Any thoughts? Any experience with the new Misfit Shine, for instance?

How did you get so toned? I have no idea...

I want to tone up a bit. I'm female, 30yrs, very satisfied with my weight and overall body shape. I've always been on the thin side and eat pretty healthy so I'm not looking to lose weight or improve my lifestyle. I have a lot going on right now so I don't want to commit to the gym or an exercise regimen. I just want to get toned by doing things here and there in my normal day to day life. I'm looking for ideas that I can do when I do other things, such as squats when I brush my teeth, or push ups in the ad breaks when I watch TV. Arm curls with cans of soup while waiting for the pasta to cook , that kind of thing. I'm not very creative in a fitness sense, so please help me brainstorm and get toned!

Exercising with my pre-teen?

I'm a dad and my oldest - now a pre-teen, who this year started at high school - is always tired and hates exercise. how to increase strength/endurance with weak ankles & wrists?
