Hiring a personal trainer/nutritionist while sick?

I've suffered from a chronic illness for many years. I've come to the conclusion that I need to jump off the endless doctor visit merry-go-round and focus on pain management and quality of life instead. I think a personal trainer would help with that, but I don't know anything about them. [more inside]

Spin workout app

a new study proposes that a 10 minute sprint interval training (SIT) routine provides benefits comparable to a 45 minute moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) routine when performed 3 times a week. I like to try it, but it would be way easier if I could find an app for my phone which would let me enter the time intervals and intensity levels for the routine, as there are 7 intervals in the routine, 3 of them lasting only 20 seconds. Anyone know of an android app which runs user defined, timed routines? All the spin apps I've found want me to pay for a predetermined class.

What happens when you quit exercising, or 'detrain'?

I have been a daily exerciser (30-90 minutes on average, mixed cardio/strength/yoga) for a decade. I'm currently recovering from a month-long exercise rut/detraining - in other words, very little exercise due to a number of issues I'm already working to overcome - and am now curious: other than the infamous muscle loss and fat gain, what other major physiological changes start to take place after a few weeks without regular exercise? Working out: Good pain vs bad pain

I have limited time to work out, so I want to push myself hard in the time I've got, and I don't mind enduring short-term discomfort -- but I don't want to ignore my body's warning signals. How important is it really to skip a day between workouts?

I recently discovered that I enjoy swimming laps for exercise, which I am doing to get fit. However, I realized today that the ideal days for me to go to the pool are Wednesday before work, Thursday late-afternoon, Friday mid-morning, and Saturday morning. This is contrary to the notion of my youth that I should really exercise more along the lines of Monday-Wednesday-Friday. Is my Wednesday-Saturday plan potentially harmful? Should i not do it? It just seems that the better schedule is the one I would actually follow. [more inside]

Best single piece of home exercise equipment?

So, I'm looking to lose a little weight, get healthier and tone up. I'd also like to do it in the comfort of my own home. What's the one item of equipment most likely to achieve this? It has to be one only, I don't have space, money nor the inclination for an entire home gym. The plan is to set it up in the open living area of the home where I can squeeze some workout time in whilst I watch my two young kids. (For time and convenience reasons, I won't be joining a gym. Also, I hate gyms.) Ideally, I will be hiring the equipment initially. What are your thoughts?

And Bend and Lift and Stretch and Laugh

We’re heading into our neverending winter here, and I’d like some ideas for exercise videos or games that I can do with my 10 and 12 year old kids. As corny as it is, I’d love a modern day Sweatin to the Oldies. Does such a thing exist? Funny songs and laughing while we do cardio or strength training? We are not fans of most current Pop music – unless it’s being covered by Weird Al. And my daughter made a face when I suggested Yoga, so new agey is out. Any suggestions for videos or Youtube channels or other that could help us out? (We have a PS4 and XBOne, but not a Wii)
