Cardio Equipment: New or Used?

We're considering getting a piece of cardio equipment for the home, probably an elliptical. Are there any serious pitfalls to buying it used? The price difference seems pretty enormous, which always makes me suspicious. [more inside]

What's the learning-for-fun equivalent in diet and exercise?

I think we learn best not through rigid reading lists and assignments but when we follow our interests freeform. Yet habits, routines, calorie counting, repetitive exercises, and other finger-wagging components of "health as a necessary chore" seem to be the prevalent attitude in nutrition and physical fitness. How could one get really healthy through the fitness and diet equivalents of reading randomly for pleasure, tinkering, exploring, and problem solving for the joy of it?

Diet & Exercise

I have asked similar questions in the past, so I apologize if this seems redundant but I am not having any success with shedding the weight. I am roughly fifty pounds overweight and I don't like how I feel or look right now. I can eat very lightly for breakfast and lunch, but at night I tend to eat way too much. Some of this is related to a medication that I take, but I'm unsure how to counter this other than through sheer willpower. [more inside]

Gamify my exercise experience! Difficulty level: stationary bike

So I have achilles tendinopathy as well as problems with my knees and feet which means (long story short) I need non-weight-bearing exercise. I have a recumbent stationary bike which is great for developing strength in knees, is easy on the poor achilles and is generally a good idea. Problem: I loathe doing it because it bores me senseless. Solution, I hope, is to gamify it. [more inside]

"Do I look fat?" No... (yes!!)

My husband sometimes asks me, "Do I look fat?" The answer is yes, but I don't know how to say "yes." Should I tell him the truth? Here's the context: For several years he has been hitting the gym hard. 5x/week at Crossfit, and currently in training for his third marathon. He went from a skinny, twiggy guy to a mass of muscle. He looks great, feels great, is healthy (we are vegan but do drink lots of beer on the weekends)... but as his muscles have grown, his belly has, too. It's big and looks fatty, even though the rest of him is muscly. [more inside]

Just joined a gym for the first time in a while, looking to get healthy

I used to have a high activity job that kept me in pretty good shape without needing a gym. Over the past few years I stopped doing that job on a regular basis and instead became much more sedentary while not eating less (factually: probably more). Should I Join a Gym?

I'm trying to exercise more, mostly for reasons like getting my appetite up and sleeping better -- I don't have any "fitness goals," this is more about making exercise part of my routine. In the past, I would just go running outside, but I've never kept up with it well and summer in DC is not the best time for running outside (swampy, "code red" days, etc). Should I try to commit to running outside and doing my usual "weight baring" exercises at home, or should I join a gym? [more inside]

Getting into Shape

Does anyone have any suggestions for working out and dieting that has worked for them? Although I do not have any health problems (knock on wood), I would really like to get into shape. I typically use the elliptical at the health club and I enjoy running out side except I tend to get shin splints. Not sure whether anyone has any book recommendations that helped motivate them? Need to exercise. Low motivation. Low willpower. Ideas?

What are some good ways to get into a modest exercise routine when you know that you lack motivation and willpower and will likely want to quit after one day? Anything from a lifehacker-y website/app/bracelet gadget that somehow guilts/encourages/blackmails you, to a person who shows up at your apartment and drags you to the gym. I live alone in Manhattan. I suffer from depression - I see a therapist and I take medication (one of the major side effects of the medication is weight gain, unfortunately). I'm not really looking for mental tricks to GET willpower - I've read posts about this - I'm looking for ways to exercise given the fact that I have very little willpower.
