Aerobic exercise on "rest days" for sleep?

I often have a hard time falling asleep; intense aerobic exercise goes a long way toward remedying this problem. I often hear, however, that your body needs a "rest day" for recovery from strenuous exercise. My body certainly feels less sore if I take a rest day, but the sleep I get in return is mediocre at best. MeFites who use exercise partly for sleep: How do you balance the need for relatively heavy aerobic exercise with the need to give your body time to recover? [more inside]

Last-minute 5K training

Much like this question, but I'm slower and have less time to prepare! Basically, my goal is to run an upcoming 5k in 30 minutes or less. I ran two 5ks last fall a couple minutes over this time, and my infrequent training in the interim has hovered just over or just under my goal. Now I have less than 2 weeks and I want to make a last-ditch effort. [more inside]

Still my beating heart

I have a very fast heart rate while exercising: 160 or so at a brisk walk; 190 at a light jog; over 200 with more strenuous exercises. I am out of shape right now and have never been in athlete condition, but I have also never been sedentary (bike commuted 10 miles each day up until an injury last year, garden, walk my dog two miles a day, etc.), and my heart rate went just as high when I was in better shape. Any recommendations for a fitness tracking website/app/service that meets the following requirements? Un-supersize me. Difficulty: mental health

With anxiety, chronic depression and ADHD (I'm being treated for all), I struggle sometimes to get out of bed and go to work, let alone exercising and making healthy food (I know, I know, 30 minutes daily exercise is the single biggest thing for health). Where do I start? It seems huge and impossible. I have some spare cash to throw at this, but I’m reluctant to buy expensive clothes racks that take up space in my tiny flat and accuse me silently. If you have any ideas/tips/links for an old (50ish) seriously unmotivated introvert with a BMI of 40 and the attention span of a lizard, that’d be good. If you see a (solvable) obstacle that I'm obviously missing, I'd appreciate your insight. [more inside]

What's the learning-for-fun equivalent in diet and exercise?

I think we learn best not through rigid reading lists and assignments but when we follow our interests freeform. Yet habits, routines, calorie counting, repetitive exercises, and other finger-wagging components of "health as a necessary chore" seem to be the prevalent attitude in nutrition and physical fitness. How could one get really healthy through the fitness and diet equivalents of reading randomly for pleasure, tinkering, exploring, and problem solving for the joy of it?
