USD to EUR/Spanish Debit Cards

LivingAbroadFilter: What can I, in particular, do to avoid conversion fees from USD to EUR? I am currently living in Spain. I will be returning to the states as of summer 2010. All my money is in American banks.

Is there something I can do to avoid fees? If not, what would be the best solution so as to keep them to a minimum?

Extra Questions

I have an online ING Direct account, with one of my banks attached to it. 1. Could I withdraw money from the ING location that is near where I am now?

2. Could I open a Spanish account, and use the online ING account to transfer funds between the two? I would like to get a Spanish Debit card.

Thanks!

Most bang for the buck

Financefilter: Better to buy sterling now in bulk, or monthly for a year? Asking for a friend. We have had a look at this, this, and this previous.

Said friend has euro savings. She needs to pay for a course in sterling on a monthly basis starting this month. Having exchanged enough for the current installment already she has lost about 10p per pound purely to the rate disparity. It adds up.

That said, is she better off exchanging the entire fees now at 89p per euro or will it work out as closer to parity if exchanged on a monthly basis throughout the year? Law of averages or something?

If it's relevant, she is intending to relocate to the uk later in the year.

Are there other good options she is missing here? For example would paying by credit card negate bank commissions or anything?

Group Study Exchange - More information, please.

Have you participated in the Rotary Club's Group Study Exchange program? What benefits did it provide you, and what should I know before going? I was recently asked if I would be interested in going to Germany with a GSE program. I've read the official information on the Rotary website, but I can't find write-ups of anybody's personal experiences. What is the typical day like? What was the most rewarding part for you? Is there anything you wish you had known going in? They seem to emphasize the vocational aspect - how much opportunity is there for professional development?

Finally, I'm always suspicious of things that seem too good to be true. What kind of things can I expect to be asked in return? I just have to speak at a few meetings?

Day of the Deleted Message part 17

I have a long-winded question about deleting zombie messages from Apple's mail.app. I am trying to get rid of some unwanted email on my Mac, and finding it surprisingly difficult.

Mac OSX 10.4, downloading email from a Microsoft exchange server by POP3 because that's what the IT guys said to do.

Once a week or so I get an email that's really intended for somebody else with the same name as me in the same organization. The emails have 300-odd addresses in the the "To:" line, including a dozen or so distribution lists, to one of which I must have been mistakenly added. I have no idea how to get myself off these lists, so that is unfortunately not the answer.

Anyway, Mail.app just stalls and has to be force-quit when trying to download these messages. I then log into webmail, delete the offending message, and everything's OK again.

Except there are a whole bunch of these messages on my computer now, and try as I might I can not delete them. They just respawn. If I move them to a folder, they respawn in my inbox and now I have more copies. I have tried the rebuild mailbox command. I have tried deleting .emlx files that contain these messages - this deletes the contents of the messages, but the headers seem to stay in the system somewhere, and now my inbox is full of disembodied headers.

Does anybody have any ideas what else I can do? Are there other files I can delete without borking up all the rest of my mail? (My saved mail from my boss and colleagues is important, and there's many megabytes of it). Can I edit some file somewhere by hand to remove database lines containing a certain string? Can I export and reimport my messages in a way that will allow me to strip out the dodgy ones? Is there some Voodoo trick that might help? I have googled extensively, but the universal answer seems to be "rebuild mailbox", which just doesn't help.

save me from exchange!

Save us from exchange! Are there any alternatives (preferably open source) for calendaring we can use rather then exchange? The sales guys at my company want to be able to synch up their calendars so that everyone can see what everyone else is doing, and they'd like to be able to do it in outlook. The problem is that we (the developers) don't want to run exchange. The sales guys need to travel, and be able to use their calendars without being online, so web-based systems won't work.

I have no idea what's involved in business calendaring, but we basically need something that works as well as outlook without the need to use exchange server. I think what this entails is that they'd be able to add an entry on their PDA or laptop, have it synch up with the main system whenever an internet connection is available.
