Gmail, Exchange, Outlook, oh my! Please help sort this through.

Gmail, Outlook, and Sync oh my! How do I sort through this? Last week, I left my job. I got to keep my smartphone (Samsung on Verizon Wireless running Windows Mobile 6). At my job, I had used the phone to sync with our Exchange Server for WORK, and logged into Gmail using the Web browser for PERSONAL.

Unfortunately, I was not able to save and backup my contacts and calendar before leaving. So all that's gone. Trust me, it's a bummer.

So I'm trying to re-create my setup and achieve productivity nirvana (or nerdvana). Here are the goals I'm trying to accomplish:

-- I would like to keep my Gmail account since I've used it for years and everyone knows me on it.

-- I want to remain flexible enough so that I can still sync to future employer's Exchange Server.

---------------------

Here is how it all breaks down:

MAIL:
-- Phone: Using Gmail (via IMAP)
-- Desktop: Using Outlook 2007 (via IMAP). I detest Gmail's interface (please, no flames). It's dogslow, but it works. Molto bene!

CALENDAR:
-- Phone: ????
-- Desktop: Using Outlook 2007.
How do I get my Calendar on Outlook 2007 to sync with the phone? Should I use a third-party app like Oggsync or syncmycal?

CONTACTS:
-- Phone: ???
-- Desktop: Using Outlook 2007.
Same deal. How do I get them all in sync? Google has Contacts, but I hear they don't sync all that well.

TASKS
-- Phone: ???
-- Desktop: Using Outlook 2007.
How do I get the Tasks on Outlook 2007 to sync with the phone? Should I use a third-party like Remember the Milk?

This seems like an awful lot of overkill.

So I just went and signed up for a domain and a Hosted Exchange account. My first thought was that I figured I could just use the hosted exchange account for Tasks, Contacts, and Calendar, and use Gmail for Email. I'm starting to get second thoughts, though. Who pays $8-10/month just for Tasks, Contacts, and Calendar? This seems overkill, too.

All I want to do is be able to keep my Gmail for email, but also use Outlook 2007 on my desktop. That's the key. I want to be able to continue to use Outlook 2007 for Tasks, Contacts, and Calendar.

If anyone could help out on this, I would be immensely grateful.

cheers,
MS Exchange and IMAP

Help me communicate to my MS Exchange server admin: I want (full) IMAP access! At my current gig they use Exchange as the corporate email standard. I've been using Outlook for a few months when I got wind that IMAP was activiated on our Exchange server and other folks were using clients like Thunderbird with no issues... needless to say I was excited.

When I tried to use IMAP I was able to authenicate but the server reported that it could not find my INBOX.

When I wrote a script to dump all the folder that I *could* see via IMAP all that came back were all the 'public' folders.

When I ask for help no one at our help desk knows what the heck I am talking about.

My question is this: what 'majik words' can I say to my Exchange admin or settings has be changed for my account in Exchange so I can see my private INBOX via IMAP?

thanks!

Please help me with synchronising cleanly

Mail.app + Nokia e61 + gApps IMAP I would love to get my already fairly nifty Mail situation properly synchronised. At the moment, Google Apps handles my email for me and I access it via POP with Mail.app. It is also forwarded to MailForExchange where I am able to sychronise it with my Nokia e61. If I'm out, therefore, I can access and reply to emails. When I get back, though, my sent items in Mail do not reflect mails sent from the phone because gApps had nothing to do with that. In addition, emails read on the e61 are still unread in Mail.app.

What I would love to do is begin using IMAP with gApps but without disturbing the current archive of email I have in Mail.app and begin accessing my email on my phone by that method also.

How can I do this? Do I have to drag my folders into the IMAP folders? This is Mail 3, by the way.

How do I integrate e-mail using work and Gmail IMAP?

How do I use Gmail's new IMAP with my existing Exchange e-mail? I work for a small business that uses a hosted Exchange account for e-mail (Intermedia is the host). I use Outlook 2007 to send/receive e-mail.

I also use Google's gmail service for my personal e-mail.

I'd like to be able to integrate the two services and use Outlook as the home base. Here are my questions:

* Can I access Gmail from Outlook using IMAP?

* Do I have to do anything special to send/receive my e-mail from the hosted Exchange account on Intermedia?

* Is there a way to send e-mail from Outlook 2007 so that it still includes the correct "From:" address? In other words, work e-mail still reads as being from "me@workemail.com" and personal e-mail still reads as being from "me@gmail.com".

Links to proper tutorials would be definitely helpful if you have them. Thanks!

Switching from POP email to Exchange

We're making the switch from POP mail to hosted Exchange mail, and it isn't as much fun as it should be. Our pop mail host had become undependable over time. Along with switching providers, we decided to switch to a hosted Exchange solution. I figured mail is mail, so I probably didn't do as much upfront legwork prior to signing up for the new service (with Mi8) as I should have. Now I'm knee deep in making the transition from POP to Exchange work and am having difficulty getting off the line with it.

The first challenge is making it work with Mozilla Thunderbird. I realize Exchange is made to work with Outlook, but one of the owners of our company likes and uses Thunderbird, so I need to make the effort. It doesn't help that he's out of town until next week, so it's dangerous for me to make an arbitrary switch to Outlook on his PC. I've managed to configure Tbird to retrieve incoming mail, but haven't cracked the outgoing settings. Most of what I've found via web search says you need to use a separate SMTP server for outgoing mail if you're using Thunderbird, but I need to verify this. Mi8's response is they only support Outlook, and they're not even willing to point me to other resources. I wish I had known that before signing on with them.

The second problem I'm faced with is understanding a basic concept of Exchange. Using Outlook with POP you are given the option to leave messages on the server or automatically clear them after X days. To simplify matters, all of our users' Outlook settings delete messages after 5 days and the users archive the inbox on their own. As everybody here lives in email and needs to keep old messages, they've ended up with archives going back a few years resulting in many large (+1gb) PST files, so keeping messages on the server for any length of time isn't practical (or economical). I cannot find IMAP settings in Outlook that will automatically delete messages from the server. Is the assumption with exchange that you use the server to store all of your messages, or that you will manually archive them off? Also, Mi8 provides software called fastinstall that creates Outlook settings to connect with their servers. Unfortunately, it accomplishes this by setting up a new profile in Outlook that doesn’t let you mingle your old mail with the new. If I manually set up the Outlook clients, is there a reason I can’t just add the Exchange settings as a new email account in the existing POP profile?

And finally, does anybody have any good public web resources for Exchange administrators?

How do I completely erase my Thunderbird installation on Mac OS?

After installing, uninstalling and reinstalling, there are ghosts of my old (now deleted) IMAP folders. How the heck do I get rid of them? I installed Thunderbird a few months ago and set up my IMAP (Exchange) mail account. After I was done checking it out, I uninstalled it.

Fast forward to now, I want to switch back. After installing and running, it still lists all my old IMAP folders (now deleted from the server) and I can't figure out how to get rid of these 'ghosts'.

Googling various combinations of 'uninstall', 'Thunderbird', 'remove', and 'profile' yields some information but not enough to actually get rid of those damn ghost folders.

How to POP an Exchange 2k3 server using Outlook

I need to allow a few people to access our mail server using Outlook from outside the building. They use OWA yet do not like having to use a web page to do this (yeah, I know...).

I thought of setting up POP3 but am not sure what ports I need to open on the firewall (110, 25 do not seem to cut it).

What is the functional difference between POP3 and IMAP and is either one better/easier to setup? (File folder sharing would be an optional objective).

Microsoft's KB system sucks...any other useful articles out there?
