I'm traveling to France on my honeymoon (huzzah!) soon, and I'm looking for advice on how to travel well and be comfortable abroad. We'll be visiting Ajaccio (Corsica), various towns in Provence as part of a bike tour, and Paris. [more inside]
I'm a Canadian backpacking around Western Europe with no rigid schedule, just an idea of where I want to go and what would be a reasonable order to go from point to point. I am over 26 so I passed on the Eurail train pass as I could only get a first class pass. Question about air passes or how to get cheap fares on short notice inside. [more inside]
Finding size 14 / 48.5 shoes in Europe filter: I'm in Paris and soon to be in Amsterdam. I need some shoes for traveling and normally I buy online to avoid exactly this problem of finding my size. Due to very busy schedules, the earliest time we can take a vacation this year is the second half of October. We originally planned to go to Turkey, but Lonely Planet says that Cappadocia basically shuts down due to cold in mid October. So is that true, and if so, what other similar places would you suggest for a week at that time of year, in Europe? A little culture would be nice, since the rest of the tip will be spent in the Greek isles.
I'm going to backpack around Europe for at least 2 months but basically until I get low on money or it gets too cold. Would I have a problem getting into the first country (possibly UK) without having a return ticket? (I will be flying home from whatever country is the last stop on my tour). Should I buy some kind of open-ended ticket? Surely this is a fairly common situation, what do people do to avoid hassle? (I am Canadian).

I'd like to visit some walkable cities in Europe over the next six weekends. I don't know when I'll next be in Europe, so this is my chance. My current homebase of Dublin fits the bill: walkable, good public transportation, lovely climate (in my opinion), LOTS to see! I'm told that Amsterdam and Prague are absolute musts. [more inside]

I have a friend who will be travelling in Europe this summer. She'll be in Iceland for a few days, then Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and finally Stockholm. She'll be travelling with an unlocked iphone 3GS. I have a memory of being told, as a child, that in some (or more than one?) country in Europe, circa 1970, there were two types of stores. Type A was government regulated or licensed, and prices were fixed. Type B was not, and you were allowed to bargain. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? What was the actual situation (if I have it wrong) and in what country/countries? [more inside]

I'm looking to find doctors who practice private/concierge medicine in Europe and Asia. These doctors typically charge an upfront fee and gives you significantly more attention (ie, he has 500 instead of 3000 patients; is available immediately 24/7). They usually practice family medicine or internal medicine. This type of doctor is growing in the US, but I can't seem to find them elsewhere in the world...
I've been thinking about the social impact of relatively mundane technologies, like air conditioning, largely because of a brief mention by Kevin Kelly in What Technology Wants. He says something along the lines of, "cheap air conditioning transformed the American southeast." So I'm looking for scholarly sources that discuss the transformative power of air conditioning on american culture. [more inside]
I used to produce a public radio show and do journalism. I love writing and the work of program-making. They say everyone should change their careers at least once in their life. I moved in fundraising, which I do not honestly think is in itself a career. Since October 2010 I am the commercial director of a pro basketball team in England. I don't know how long the job will last but it has brought a lot of meaning to my life to do real executive producing again. I would like to find a mentor in sports business but most mentoring organizations in the UK are not equipped to deal with this request. What are some logical resources in Europe and the USA I should be looking at?
