I will be in Norway (Oslo & Bergen) for 5 days in mid-May. I've found lots of great threads about what to do during the day, but what about nightlife? I'm having trouble finding solid restaurant/bar recommendations, along with music venues/dancing. MeFi, where do the hip kids hang?

My brother will soon graduate from a US Maritime Academy with a 3rd Mates Unlimited, and a couple years later, have a 2nd Mates Unlimited License (to steer ships). How hard would it be to transfer/use this license in Europe? Specifically, he is interested in working in the North Sea for Norwegian companies because of the better pay, working conditions, time off

I'm looking to find doctors who practice private/concierge medicine in Europe and Asia. These doctors typically charge an upfront fee and gives you significantly more attention (ie, he has 500 instead of 3000 patients; is available immediately 24/7). They usually practice family medicine or internal medicine.
This type of doctor is growing in the US, but I can't seem to find them elsewhere in the world...

I've been thinking about the social impact of relatively mundane technologies, like air conditioning, largely because of a brief mention by Kevin Kelly in
What Technology Wants. He says something along the lines of, "cheap air conditioning transformed the American southeast."
So I'm looking for scholarly sources that discuss the transformative power of air conditioning on american culture.

I used to produce a public radio show and do journalism. I love writing and the work of program-making. They say everyone should change their careers at least once in their life. I moved in fundraising, which I do not honestly think is in itself a career. Since October 2010 I am the commercial director of a pro basketball team in England. I don't know how long the job will last but it has brought a lot of meaning to my life to do real executive producing again. I would like to find a mentor in sports business but most mentoring organizations in the UK are not equipped to deal with this request. What are some logical resources in Europe and the USA I should be looking at?

I will be working Ireland for a few months, from June to August. I plan on spending my weekends and other free periods visiting the rest of Europe. Because I'll be working, my availability isn't set in stone. So now, this penny-pincher wants to know if it is possible to get cheap round-trip airfares (below 100 euros) after I arrive and decide on places as my time frees up ... or if I have to buy the tickets and have a set itinerary NOW.

What is it like to live in Amsterdam? I will be doing a recce soon, but would really appreciate opinions on the following questions:
Is it a fun place to go out in the evening? Are the clubs good? Is there a good gig scene (punk-rock/indie/folk)? Is the city fast- or slow-paced? Is it safe for a woman to walk alone at night? Is the public transport good? Does it run all night?
Which are the interesting areas to live in? Is it a beautiful city? What is the cost of living? For example, for: an apartment, a gig ticket, a beer, a pint of milk, a sandwich at a take-away place. Is there a radical political scene?

Why did they stop posting street signs on the sides of buildings in the U.S.? Everywhere I've been in western Europe, at least anywhere marginally urban, street names are posted on the sides of buildings. In the U.S., though, they're pretty much universally stuck on a post or hung over an intersection on wires. There are still
remnants of the side-of-the-building practice throughout NYC, so the switch must have been relatively recent. Why did this happen? Does it have something to do with American conceptions of property rights? NOMBism (Not On My Building)? Legibility for motorists? Any idea?
