The recently-retired senior generation of my family is traveling from US to London in October. They are arriving separately and splitting up for a couple of different side trips, and want to be able to stay in touch by cell phone. What are the easiest, cheapest options for cell phones that they can purchase ahead of time?

A dear family member suddenly passed in Italy. I live in the Mid-Atlantic USA. I really need to travel to Italy on very short notice for the funeral. I am not a frequent air traveler to begin with, but have never been abroad in my life (though I do have a passport). I have no idea how this works. I want to know anything I should know about getting to and from my destination (e.g., negotiating customs). I also want to know how bereavement fares work, whether I should bother trying to get one, who people have had good experiences with, etc.

I have to be in Paris for an academic conference on May 31 to June 1st. On June 2nd, there's a marathon
in Sauternes, which appears to be about 6-7 hours south-west of Paris by car. My question is (1) having never been to France, and never traveled around Europe except by train and since college, can I get from Paris to Sauternes in time to run the race at 8:30am the next morning realistically? And (2) can you help me logistically plan this ahead of time so that it minimizes risk of getting lost, missing the race, and spending a lot of money? I will be flying out of Paris, fyi, and haven't booked any flights yet.

I'm looking for a book that examines the global potential of a United States of Europe in terms of economic prosperity, military power and political influence. I’m not interested in the likelihood of a US of Europe being created, but how well an integrated federation of European States could compete with the USA and the upcoming BRICS on the world stage. I hope it would also look at the threats to Europe if it remains fragmented.

European Dream Filter! I have had dreams about an unspecified city, walking uphill in a street too narrow for cars, with tall multi-use buildings on either side of me; possibly even an implied feeling of cobblestones. No signage in my dream giving me any clues as to what country this might be. Did I see this in a movie? No idea. But these dreams have instilled a desire to find a place which feels like this...suggested travel instructions?

We live in the USA. My family of five, two adults and three kids (youngest 11, oldest 17), are planning a trip for this summer (July/August). We have friends who have invited us to two very different parts of the world and we're trying to decide where to go. We can either take a France/Italy trip,
or go to Hong Kong (and maybe make our way up to Japan or down to Thailand if the price is right). Looking for experiences, advice, stories, from those of you who have traveled the world that will help us make the choice.

I am looking for a little translation help on an inflation statistics paper in German language (look in more inside for the link). This official paper is quite interesting for students of statistics and social students interested in perceived cost of living vs actual cost of living, in Europe as well as in any other country, as it allegedly shows that indeed there were some excessive rouding of prices during the conversion to euro in Germany.
