Car rental insurance in the UK (and paying US rates for the rentals!)

I'm a US citizen with a US driver's license, currently living in London. I don't own a car and I don't have car insurance. I'm planning to rent cars on holidays in the UK and elsewhere in Europe a few times this year. How do I do this without buying the typically exorbitant insurance coverage from the rental agencies and not relying on the limited coverage that my US credit card offers? [more inside]

Yet another travel rec question!

We're looking for advice on where to go this summer! We have narrowed it down to two options: Malta & Cyprus or Central Europe (some combination of Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland). We've seen a lot of Europe, but not any of these places (I was sick in Munich for a couple days a decade ago, but that's it). Obviously it's kind of silly to ask which of these trips is "better", so we're looking for feedback based on our preferences & parameters, listed below the fold. [more inside]

Tell me about your favorite European cookware brands

I'm looking to start replacing the hodgepodge cheapo pots and pans I've collected over the years. I cook on gas and don't really want non-stick or ceramic excepting one pan I expect to replace as needed; I'm more interested in stainless steel, aluminum, carbon, enamel and copper. And being in Italy, I am more interested in the European brands. Le Cruset, Staub, mauviel, De buyer are the immediate results for googling European cookware - what else am I missing?

Is getting a MPA/MPP degree in Europe useless for work in the US?

I'm considering pursuing a degree to further my career in child welfare, educational and cultural non-profits. As I'd love to spend time living abroad and I wouldn't get into a especially impressive school here in the US, I'm wondering if it would be useless to get my degree from a university in Europe (most likely in the UK). If it is worth doing, what schools should I be looking at? Would I be eligible for any sort of financial aid?

I think I'll stay here for awhile.

I was traveling through Central Europe last month and stayed in some pretty cool hostels. The staff were really cool and hung out with you, and were more like friends than your typical hostel staff. One thing I noticed is that most of them just landed there. Some have been there 3 months with the intention to stay another 6, some have been there a year. They just happened to visit for a few days and then started working at the hostel. My question: how is this done? I have a hard time believing they could get a work visa for this sort of thing, or does that exist? Or do people that do this just come on your typical 90-day tourist entry and illegally stay longer and just deal with the consequences when they leave?

Using high-wattage Euro electrical goods in the US

I am moving to California from Europe and have a houseful of electrical items rated for 220V, 50Hz. Lamps with incandescent bulbs and things with wall-warts AFAIK just need plug adaptors (I think?). Kettles, toasters, hairdryers, clock radios etc will probably get ditched. The problem is a few expensive, high-wattage items: fancy steam iron with integrated boiler (2200W) - vacuum cleaner (ditto) - coffee machine (1450W) - laser printer (a mere 660W). Is there any way to use these in the US short of buying 4 enormous step-up transformers? [more inside]

Cheap but clean hotel/hostel in Rome at the end of November?

I'm visiting my brother, studying abroad in Rome, at the end of November. I was planning on staying with him, but he just told me that wouldn't be possible. So I'll need a hostel or cheap hotel. It'll be for nine days, so I'd really rather not break the bank. His apartment is in the Trestevere area, so hopefully I can stay around there.
