I have a 20-something friend who's leaving on the 22nd of this month, he plans on traveling for a whole year throughout Europe and South America. I want to get him something that is useful/meaningful for the journey, any ideas? For example: A watch? A Compass? (good or bad?)

Please recommend a cell phone for use in the USA and Europe. Will be in London and Italy for at least six months. Would like a phone that I can use in the USA and Europe. Pay-as-you-go plan preferred. Just starting to think about a smart phone for email and wi-fi internet access. Cost is a consideration. Suggestions please.

So I'm going to Italy for a class and then I'm planing on traveling around for a little while afterwords in the month of August. I'll probably stay mainly in Italy, but I would like to go to Greece and maybe visit my cousins in France. I've never done something like this so I really could use some help with my trip. Is there some guide for people for backpacking in Europe? What are just some overall recommendations on traveling like this? [more inside]

I'm looking for a good book or two surveying the major topics in European history up through the unification of Germany and Italy in the late 1800s. Ideally, the book would have a level of detail similar to what would be covered in an AP European History class or a lower-division undergraduate European history course. Bonus points if the book has a good bibliography for further reading on specific events/time periods.

I bought a great lamp in Denmark, but I live in the U.S. Apart from rewiring, has anyone had any luck with a converter/transformer that would allow me to use this stateside? The plug notes it's 230v, 50 hz (inductor type BL1); I believe it's a "C" type plug with the two pins. It's a very small lamp, I can't imagine it uses much power. Anyone had any luck with this sort of thing?

Our rough plan: Get a taste of the best of Europe without running ourselves ragged. Experienced European Travelers: If you had this time, this money, this background, where would you go and what would you see? Where would you fly into/out of? How would you get from place to place?
