## I need an itemized list of all the steps of building a house.

We're finally building a house! As owner-builders, we need to communicate with contractors about the scope of the work for which we are requesting estimates. We know generally what we want, but need the language for communicating with folks in the trade.

## How can I tell how old my pepper trees were?

COUNT THE RINGS, I KNOW?! amirite? Except, no, I find it really difficult to count the rings as the chainsaw obliterated a lot of them, and the wood doesn't lend itself to clear rings. How else can I estimate the age of this tree?

## Giant numbers (Ex: how many primes are smaller than the largest known?)

Many sites say that the largest known prime is "2^57,885,161 − 1, a number with 17,425,170 digits." Given this and well known research about the density of primes, I think it's at least possible to estimate the number of primes between 1 and 2^57,885,161 − 1. But I don't know how to do this myself. I really want the answer to this one (the order of magnitude at least), but I've got lots of these, and I'd ideally like more cool ones. :)

## Skyrocketing Zillow Estimate For My House

Holy crap. My house value has been creeping up since the bust, which was to be expected. But I just checked Zillow, and they've boosted its estimated value by 23% in the past 30 days (I'm in Westchester County, not far from White Plains).

## Estimated taxes

I just started working for myself in September. before I was on a W2. There is a deadline on January 15th for paying estimated taxes for self employed individuals. Are those taxes for the earnings I made in the last quarter of 2013 or for what I expect to make in the first quarter of 2014. What's an easy way to figure out how much I owe (or would owe). I'd like to note I didn't make that much working for myself yet so it's possible I don't even owe anything for Q4 of 2013. but I have no idea.

## Should I heat my barn with gas or electricity?

We have an old barn in our backyard that we are currently restoring. It will be fully insulated when finished (though we're recycling old windows that are probably 100 years old, which are single pane, so it won't be optimally efficient.) I am trying to decide if we should heat it with gas or electricity. Because the barn has never been heated before, and we're changing it anyway, I'm having a hard time estimating costs. (See extended explanation for details.)

## Price change after paying; pay up?

[bait and switch filter] I purchased a washer and dryer last weekend, but have heard back that, due to a mistake on their end, the wrong price was quoted and is now \$300 higher. Should we cover their cost and pay more, or argue that they must honor their guaranteed written estimate, which we've already paid?

## How much rent is reasonable?

Is there a formula somewhere that will help me determine how much I should be paying for rent based on my income? I’m moving to Boston, and I think I am looking at places in the correct price range, but how can I be sure? Let’s say my partner and I make a combined income of \$65K. Is there an online tool that can help me plug in my estimated monthlies and come up with the declaration: Since you are living in TownX, you should pay between Y and Z in rent. Any more, and you’re going to be setting yourself up for disaster!
