How profitable is a golf course? I love playing golf and would love to own a golf course. However, with the price of real estate the way it is, I wonder if it is even really profitable? Is it more profitable to buy couple hundred acres and put a course on it or put some homes down? I would think that it would be more profitable to put homes down, because the course would take several years to get out of the red.

I just bought what was once a very nice house in Maplewood, NJ (Essex County). It has become very rundown and was assessed by our mortgage company at a value of 340,000 in it's current condition. It was a great deal and after a little work will be amazing. Is there a way to have it's taxation rate changed based on the purchase price? Currently, it's very high. I have a horrible real estate agent. He's acting as our buying agent and, without going into details, we'd like to sever our relationship with him. Unfortunately, we signed an agreement saying that we'd work with him until May 31st.

Gadzooks--I just received a "Notice of Real Estate Assessment Change" telling me that there is a 65% increase in the assessment of my home since the last one was done two years ago. Assuming this is not a mistake, do you have any advice for appealing? I haven't really done anything to my property, but there is a lot of development going on, but this seems awfully steep and unfair.

I'm primarily interested in current appraisals, past sales history and property taxes for a single address, and also current and historical inventory of homes for sale (# of MLS listings) in a single town or zip code.
I'm aware of Domania.com. Any others? I had access to realquest.com for a short period of time, but they are rather expensive for individual use.

Hi, I wondered if any of you knew about where to live in Naples, Florida. My husband and I are in our mid-thirties, with 6 month baby. If the web is to be believed the average age is 137 and all there is to do is shopping and hurricane boarding and hoarding. We are a pretty hip couple moving from Brooklyn NY. We really enjoyed our neighbors and sense of community in Brooklyn but now our husband's job is moving us down to FL. We will probably rent in the short term and would like to be within walking distance of the beach and shops. Any advice would be great, thanks.
