What did I lose when I upgraded to Win7?

[Various Filters] I am stuck.
I am using MS Visual Studio 2008 to create a software package. I saved all the source code and what (I thought) I needed so I could format the machine and install the Win7 Update as a fresh OS. After reinstalling the VS2008 compilers, now the project will not compile. The project is a VB.NET front-end GUI and a VC++ DLL back-end which talks to a PIC24FJ256GB110 micro over USB.
The compiler starts spewing error messages as the except.h header file is drawn in. (This file is created by Microsoft and included by some other file, I do not know what file actually includes it.)
The first specific error is: "C2065 '_In_': undeclared identifier."
I suspect that the problem is some kind of compiler setting or directive that is not carried over in the project file. I tried creating a new project from scratch and working the source files into the new project, but the error persists.
I have posted questions on the MS news servers and on stackoverflow.com and have not received helpful answers.

Do I ask the publisher for a new copy or would that be stupid?

Book Collectors: Is my new signed collector's edition book more or less valuable with a cutting machine error? I received a wonderful present: A signed collector's edition of "Under the Dome" by Stephen King. It also came with a set of collector cards. The set came directly from the publisher. So I'm not really a book collector, but I'm delighted to have this copy.

I noticed that there are about 10 pages that were cut wrong. The cutting machine left a triangle shaped tag on the top corner of these pages.

I took a picture so you can see what the error looks like.

Do I ask for a new copy or is it better to keep this one -- just in terms of future value?

How can I keep these videos from crashing Windows every time I try to get to them?

How can I keep these videos from crashing Windows every time I try to get to them? I found my old flip cam in the closet today and discovered on it a treasure trove of videos from when my dog was just a few weeks old, running around being spastic and other adorable puppy things.

When I tried to open the flip cam in windows explorer to copy these to my computer I get the message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close." So instead I used the built in program on the flip to download them to my hard drive.

However whenever I try to navigate to them on my computer the same thing happens. When I open the folder which contains the folder with these videos in them, I get the "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem" thing again, except now if I don't immediately close Windows Explorer I get another error which says "The exception Integer Division by Zero (0x0000094) occured in the application at location 0x0392dd11."

I'm not quite sure what this means or what to do. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling my graphics card drivers and video codecs (divx etc) in the thought that maybe that had something to do with it, and so far nothing. Can't really think what else might help. The flip has worked perfectly fine in the past and I've got a lot of videos on my computer that came from it and don't cause these errors.

Can anyone tell me what is going on and how to fix it, so I can save these videos of my pup?

Wordpress plugin incompatibility

Wordpress Filter: Plugin incompatibility with my theme - website screws up on IE. How do I fix it? 2 of my plugins (Contact Form 7, Post Tabs) give a java script error when enabled on this site. The js error doesn't do much in firefox but it renders the whole site disfunctional in IE ( drop down nav doesn't work, tabs under the headline slider don't work, etc).

In IE, when I have debugging enabled, I get an error pop-up stating that there is a error on Line 89. After I click "debug", this is what is shown:

Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object doesn't support this property or method

Inside the file, the following code is highlighted on line 89:

{return jQuery.easing[jQuery.easing.def](x,t,b,c,d);}

So how do I fix this issue in IE? Do I need to contact the plugin author to check if they are using the latest jQuery? ( the theme author says that he is using the latest jQuery) Is there any way around this issue?

Why isn't CVS giving me the code files?

What could I be missing with CVS? Checkout only gives me header files even though I can see that there are code files in the same directory. I have been provided a CVS repository to work with. Using WinCVS I can traverse the repository and can see what files are in each directory and know that there are a mix of header and code files. When I try to checkout modules, the directory structure gets created and the header files are there, but the code files are not extracted. I've tried a bunch of stuff without avail. Note that this is a copy of the repository, and I cannot be sure it was created correctly. What do I check?

Hard Drive Recoverable?

I just pulled an older computer out of the closet to donate, and yesterday it booted up fine. Today, I get an error stating "A disk read error occured, press CTL ALT DEL to reboot." I used UBCD for Windows and I cannot see the hard drive when I boot from there either. What other avenues should I explore to try and fix the disk, or is it toast and the files unrecoverable? I am willing to open it up. Thanks in advance. Info on the computer:
Email Delivery Failure

I'm trying to send a .PDF file to multiple recipients. The file is 12,275k, but I'm getting a delivery failure saying the file size is too big. I'm using gmail and I know that the file size is not too big. What gives? How do I send it? I know the file is not too big. I get the following error: "Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 552 552 message size exceeds maximum size (state 18)."

When I google this all I find is advice saying the file is too big, but it's not, as evidenced by other emails I've sent with larger attachments. I really need to send this email (actually. it's for my girlfriend, but whatever), how do I overcome this. I'm using gmail and it's going to about 17 recipients who among them are using many different email services. All deliveries fail. I need to send this out, what do I do?

Fix disk drive error or pay for data recovery?

Computer has "disk read error press ctrl + alt + delete" problem. I would like to get the data off it, and put it on a new computer. Is this something I can get fixed and then get the data off of it? Or do I need to pay out the nose for a data recovery person? So windows xp computer says "disk read error press ctrl + alt + delete." Do it, and you go back to the same error screen.

I'm a computer idiot. I know nothing about them mechanically. I would like the data off the computer (photos, documents). The data was all on the d: drive (my idiot's understanding is that I had one drive that was partitioned into a c: and d: drive).

So, I don't know if that is even something that can be fixed. But I checked with a reputable data recovery place.

They did a free initial screening of the drive. This is what they responded with:

"Your drive has sustained mechanical failure and requires clean room work and proprietary procedures in order to bypass the damage and recover your data.
Your drive has sustained mechanical failure to internal parts within the drive.
The media is in working conditions, but may have intermittent problems and is suggested to be replaced.
Drive clicks 3 times and then stops, and won't ID"

Cost of recovery: $1,600.

Now, I'd like the data off there. I don't know if I want it bad enough for $1,600.

My question is this: from that can anyone tell what is wrong with the computer, and if so, whether it is something that can be fixed to get the data? I'm planning on throwing away the whole thing and getting a new computer; I just want the data at this point. But I'd rather find a cheaper route than paying the $1600 for the data recovery. So maybe fix the drive and get the data myself? Or is $1600 a reasonable price to pay to get the data given the skill required to retrieve it, or can I likely find a cheaper place for this?

Outlook 2003 runtime error '4198' - wuzzat?

When I copy/paste documents into Outlook 2003 on the computer I got this week, I get a "Microsoft Visual Basic Run-time error '4198': Command failed". My go-to person for IT stuff is away, and whatever this VBS stuff is, I find google results to be over my head. Help? Using MS Office Standard 2003. I've already run the Detect & Repair tool, and I still get the problem.

I used to be able to Copy/Paste PDFs, etc into an Outlook mail message and it would end up as an attachment.
But I got a new PC and this error comes up now.

In the window that shows me the error message, there are 4 buttons:
Continue End Debug Help

Continue and Debug are greyed out and don't do anything.
Help doesn't help.
End closes the error and the PDF or whatever DOES end up as an attachment.

But the error makes me think that something's not set up right, or I'm missing some background component that makes it work.

Any ideas?

Google's services don't work in a specific way

Why aren't most google services working for me and why do the error pages look identical in firefox, chrome, and IE8? For about a week most google services have stopped working for me. Oddly, I get identical error messages that look like this in all three browsers on my computer (firefox, chrome, and IE8 in Windows Vista) as well as on Mac with Safari in OSX. By identical, I mean that the layout, font, and wording is exactly the same. I am in China, so this may be related to the Great Firewall, but I don't think so. As a comparison, here's an image of the error page I get when trying to view youtube (which is currently blocked in China): firefox, chrome, IE8. While the error is the same in those 3 screenshots, the browsers display them differently.

This behavior happens with all www.google.com/* services that I can remember, but gmail (www.gmail.com redirecting to mail.gmail.com) doesn't exhibit the problem.

What mainstream DVD player has the best error correction?

What mainstream DVD player has the best error correction? I'm totally frustrated that I often cannot play scratched rental DVD's on my existing DVD player (an eight-year old Sony player that cost a fortune at the time).

I want to get an affordable new player that can play scratched discs well. I don't need any fancy HD/progressive scan/1080/whatever new features.

I'm in South Africa so unfortunately I don't have access to any smaller, more 'boutique' brand players, just mainstream brands.

I've scoured Google on this topic, and so far have just come up with a few anecdotal recommendations for Panasonic, Pioneer and JVC. I was really hoping to find a site that rated players on this issue, but no joy after nearly an hour of searching.

(Incidentally, a similar question WAS asked here on Metafilter before - but nearly five years ago. Only a few recommendations and of course VERY out of date).

Rich black is sending me to the funny farm.

I have been having a pervasive printing error that I, as a professional should know how to avoid/solve but I can't seem to stop cutout images from printing richer than the surrounding color. Let me explain... OK, so say you have a hat photographed on black velvet in a way that it is pretty much black as black can be. You want to make a flyer where the entire thing is black. So you take it into Indesign and make a black square, then place the hat graphic (.psd) on top of it.

When it prints, however, you break out into tears. The borders of image is evident because it printed in rich black and the black square is just plain ol' black ink. You take it back into photoshop and erase the black background so now you just have a hat. But, lo and behold, the damn thing still prints rich black where the borders of the image are.

You decide to go with the hat on a yellow background. The yellow under the image prints out a slightly different shade of yellow.

So, am I supposed to make a clipping path around every single item I place on a colored background? Some of these images I use are of historic fur artifacts that wouldn't take well to a clipping path to eliminate rich black.

More details:

1. I am printing on an HP Laserjet 5550dtn PS
2. I am outputting all blacks as rich black. Doesn't seem to be working
3. The blacks are registration
4. I have run a test page with the same image as a CMYK with black background, CMYK without, RGB without, greyscale without, and a CMYK with clipping path. The only one without a rich black square around it was the clipped one.
5. There are no text effects
6. I read This post but it did not help me.

I think my options are:
1. reinstall print drivers. Maybe it was set up wrong.
2. Do something obvious in InDesign or Photoshop that my idiot brain can't figure out
3. switch careers
4. kill myself
5. switch careers, then kill myself
6. win the lottery

Why are dates disappearing from Movable Type calendar

Movable Type calendar issues: Why are certain dates just disappearing? I am overseeing the development of a website for a client who requires Movable Type as their CMS. It is proving to be rather annoying compared to comparable products like Drupal. But we're mostly getting where we need to be.

We are having on inexplicable problem with the calendar widget, though. We have it set up properly, and it appears to function (e.g., it properly displays/links to entries for the specified date; the whole thing basically looks right; clicking takes you to the correct entry, etc.).

There is one disturbing problem, though: periodically, certain days just disappear from the calendar. The "box" for that date stays there, but the number is just gone. If I create an entry for that specific day, I can make the number appear again (this is obviously not an acceptable solution, but an interesting phenomenon nonetheless), but it appears to only be willing to to display "nonlinked" dates for some of the days.

I believe (but am not 100% sure) that this corresponds to the creation of unrelated entries in categories OTHER than the one being displayed in the calendar (e.g., the date is there, then I create an unrelated entry, then the date disappears).

I can't find any info on this error in Movable Type's documentation of forums (though, to be fair, their forums don't really appear to be entirely functional, possibly because they are built in Movable Type.

Has anyone seen this before? Is there some known solution?

Which one is right, Google or Excel? I've discovered that Google's calculator and Excel give slightly different results when converting metric and English weights. For example, when I convert 1 gram to ounces in Excel, I get: 0.035273972 whereas Google gives me 0.035273962.

I just tried converting pounds to ounces in Excel. It's telling me that 1 pound contains 16.000002342941 ounces. Is that an error of some kind in Excel, or am I missing something?

At what point is a merchant required to complete a sale?

At what point, if any, is an online merchant required to complete the sale? I know that ads are "invitations to bargain" and whatnot, so that a merchant is not obligated to honor an advertised price.

But as the transaction progresses from me seeing the advertisement to me putting the item in my cart, to me tendering payment, to my order being processed, does the merchant lose their right to back out of a sale?

Specifically, I found a very good deal on a major retailer's "Outlet" website. Specifically, a nice monitor for $50, when $150-200 was the norm. But because it was the outlet site of a company known for cheap products, and because it didn't appear to be a decimal error (e.g., $19.99 when $199.99 was meant), I believed the price was correct and placed my order. If it matters, the product was listed as out of stock but still for sale.

Several days after placing the order, I received an e-mail explaining that there had been a pricing error, and that they were canceling the order and returning my money, as well as giving me a $10 online coupon.

Does the fact that I already paid for the product negate their ability to cancel the sale? It seems that they should lose their right to change their mind after I've already paid.

I'm not an unhinged lunatic planning to sue because they didn't sell me a computer monitor at a really low price. I'm mostly just curious about the law: can they take my money and then decide not to sell it to me?

Help me feel better about buying a new laptop.

My computer is having a hardware issue when booting... I think. Started getting BSODs when booting (Windows XP, SP2). I can't say for certain what the error is since the computer restarts immediately on throwing the error (even with the automatic restart disabled). The error isn't consistent: sometimes windows will boot up fine, and I'll be able to use it normally (I'm typing on it Right! Now!).

Ran memcheck on it, and it passed. Downloaded "The Ultimate Boot CD" and booted from that - I was able to run the basic utilities, but any attempt to boot a disk image that came along with the cd either hung or threw an error.

Furthermore, the system is dual-boot, and I tried booting into the secondary OS (not booted for a couple weeks, no additional software installed for > 1 year) and it also BSODs.

So I'm thinking it's a hardware issue...somewhere. I've ruled out the memory, and the hard drive doesn't seem to have anything to do with it (else why would it hang on booting from cd), so it's probably something on the motherboard, i.e., I need a new laptop. Still, I have this nagging feeling that it *might* be software, somehow, so I'm wondering if there are any other diagnostic steps I should take to convince myself the laptop is (soon to be) toast.

Help my printer with its issues

Printer will no longer print, wirelessly or not. At home I have an HP Photosmart D7400 which I use for USB printing from my desktop and wireless network printing. Recently the printer has refused to print anything from anywhere (Notepad, Word, FF, etc.) and the Windows Printer manager dialogue says it's printing, then it gives an error. There is no extended information it just says "Printing-Error". I've tried googling this to a large extent, but I'm pressed for time now, and I was hoping the AskMe community could help.

Would reinstalling the printer software fix this issue, or is it something else?

(The only reason I haven't done the reinstall is that I'm away at University right now, and the printer is at home. It's not a terrible distance for me to go home, but I would like to have a solid idea about the issue before I try to fix it. This is beyond the scope of my parent's computer abilities to fix.)

The laptop is running Vista SP1 and the desktop is running XP Home SP3, if that helps.

I don't use PC's very much but I'm trying to set one up for my son and I'm encountering a very strange error when I try to boot from the XP CD and reformat the hard drive.

I insert the CD and boot from it. The following error occurs: "Attempting to load an x64 operating system, however this CPU is not compatible with x64 mode. Please install a 32-bit x86 operating system."

This is an HP Laptop that is only about 18 months old and has always run XP without a problem. What the heck does this error mean, and how can I fix it? Please be specific with any instructions since I only rarely interact with the Windows operating system.

Thanks a lot!

What have I missed troubleshooting my VGA problem?

I'm getting a video display error when i try and boot up my computer. Is there a solution I'm just not thinking of? If not, can I still buy a Socket 939 motherboard to replace a malfunctioning one? A little history. I built my computer a few years ago, and Its been fine. I finally decided I wanted to upgrade to a newer video card, and that was an ordeal in itself because I need an AGP card, and can't afford to upgrade my CPU, Motherboard, RAM and Video Card all at once.

Basically, I put in the new video card, and booted up. It looked and sounded normal at first, beginning to boot up, but stopped checking memory. I turned off the computer, fiddled with the ram to make sure i didn't dislodge it at all, reseated the video card, and tried again. the next time i didn't even get that far.

Now when I turn on the computer it beeps at me. One long, and two short, followed by a lower mid length, and a still lower tone. i've heard the "long-short-short" before, and in fact, when I looked it up in the motherboard manual, it says Video Display Error. I've tried my old AGP card and even the video card I had before that, and all 3 cards get the same error.

I also have an old linux box i play around with from time to time, so I've tried all 3 video cards in there, knowing that the latest one shouldn't even boot up since it require more power than the old PSU puts out. It did start booting up and got all the way up to initializing the video card (which it failed, but i'd expected it to.

At this point, I'm assuming there is something wrong with my Comptuer's AGP slot on my main computer's motherboard. I don't have access to a PCI video card, or I'd try that out to see if that worked.

I'm hoping i'm forgetting something stupid, so let me know what I missed!

Assuming it can't be fixed, the other problem I have is that I can't find a Socket 939 motherboard anywhere to replace my old one.

Cannot connect to a running wifi network

NewbieWifiFilter: What could prevent OSX from logging on to a working wifi network that Airport detects? Moved in to a new place where there is an already set-up wifi router which works for three roommates, one of whom has a Mac as well.

One of them gave me the name and password of the network, Airport on an iMac running 10.4.11 detected it automatically among others, but there is "an error", dixit OSX without further details, after I submit the password, "to connect to the network".

I tried all available encryption options offered when prompting the network password, but the OK button remains shadowed and inaccessible with all but one of them, which leads to the error.

Signal strength and interferences should not be issues.

Apart from a typing error of the password, what should I investigate to solve the problem? Should I try to tinker with the router even though it works for my three roommates? Which client settings should I examine?

Just looking for the first few steps to take. I am googling, but I am not yet able to separate the noise from the signal I am looking for in the vast volume of information available. Thanks!

The Superdrive on my iMac started acting strange, but I didn't notice at first as I rarely use it. Blank Media means nothing to it, DVDs are foreign and it only (sorta) likes the odd tracks on Audio CDs. Add to this the fact the drive shows up weird in 'About this Mac'... what do I do? 2Ghz iMac, early 2008 model. Out of 90 days, but still in the 1 year warranty, so I officially don't get Phone Support. Would prefer not to be without my computer, though I do live near the Apple Store in Charlotte, NC.

- The computer does nothing after inserting blank media, CD or DVD. It does not mount it, burn it, acknowledge it, or eject it. To Eject, you have to reboot & eject it during the boot up.

- If you insert a manufactured off the shelf Audio CD, the drive will mount it to the desktop as an Audio CD, open up iTunes... and that's it. It will not mount the disc in iTunes, and opening the Finder will show only the Odd (1,3,5,etc) numbered tracks and they will not play. Using 'Get Info' on the disc reveals that OS X thinks the disc is 8GBs and completely full.

- Inserting a manufactured, off the shelf DVD will result in an error message that the computer does not recognize that type of media.

- Computer doesn't burn discs from Finder, Toast, or Disco. In fact, all of them swear there's no burner. Well, Finder and Toast swear. Disco just crashes. I uninstalled Toast & Disco, to no avail.

- Starting DVD Player returns an error message that there is no DVD player.

- On a few occasions inserting a manufactured, off the shelf DVD has resulted in... (wait for it...) the "Blank Media" dialog box.

- About this Mac states that there is no burning device on this computer.

- In the ATA device listing in 'About this Mac,' The DVD player appears like this:

> ATA BUS:
OPUIARC !DWD!RW AD-5731A! ! ! ! ! ! ! !:

Model:	OPUIARC !DWD!RW AD-5731A! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Revision:	1AIM! !
Serial Number:	! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Detachable Drive:	No
Protocol:	ATAPI
Unit Number:	0
Socket Type:	Internal
Low Power Polling:	No

- I have rebooted 3 times today. 1st time, the DVD player appeared as above. Second it appeared as "NPTI@RB DVD RV 5360A" (this was when it'd mount DVDs as blank discs). Third time was back to the above.

In case it's any help... here's the other info from About This Mac:
Hardware Overview:

Model Name:	iMac
Model Identifier:	iMac7,1
Processor Name:	Intel Core 2 Duo
I've recorded my weight and the number of calories I've eaten each day for the past 6 months. I want to use to data to figure out the maximum number of calories I can eat each day without gaining weight. Any ideas on how to do this with statistics? I run into problems because my calorie counting is somewhat inexact, I'm probably only accurate to +/- 200 on a given day. Also there is temporary weight gain and loss due to water and sodium intake which needs to be ignored somehow. I also missed a few days here and there which I need to figure out how to handle.

Let me know if it would help to see the data. I can send it to you.

I'm getting a 500 internal server error when trying to install WordPress 2.6.2 on my iPower hosted website. I've installed via iPower's Control Panel several times. The mySQL table is created correctly (from what I can tell) and the config.php file has the correct information, but I get the 500 error when I try to access the /blog directory that the files are installed to, or when I try access the wp_admin site within same.

I've downloaded 2.6.2, unzipped it on my computer and FTP'd it to the /blog directory as well, with the same results.

I've tried to look at the server logs to see if there's anything there, but I can't seem to open them to check the content. Any ideas? This AskMe question had some similar questions, but the error was a 404.

admins: intelligent rate-limiting of error notifications?

I have a web service that generates errors. Currently, each time there's an error, it gets sent to an admin mailing list.

Is there an open-source tool that will summarize repeated duplicate errors, rather than generating a separate notification for each?
For example, say there are 100 'service foo threw exception bar' errors in a 15 minute window.

What I'd like to see is one initial 'service foo threw exception bar' notification, followed by a single second notification 'service foo threw exception bar repeated 99 times.'

This seems like it must be a solved problem, where there's a single 'sink' for all of the notifications from various services that can summarize duplicates and in doing so prevent alert fatigue (and enormous pager/SMS bills).

So I turn to the collective wisdom of ask.mefi - does this exist?
