What do I do with years-old equipment that belongs to my old cable service provider?
Equipment dates from 2009. Furnished by Verizon FIOS, which then switched to Frontier FIOS. A cable modem, DVR, and set-top box. We moved house in 2010, and cancelled Frontier service. Attempted to return the equipment. This involved them shipping empty boxes to us. We never got the boxes. Attempts failed. I have no documentation of those attempts. Equipment is sitting in our garage, and I need to get rid of it.
Which option is best?
The easy way: Donate the equipment to a recycler.
The hard way: Contact Frontier and try to return their equipment. This is likely to be time-consuming, and annoying. I recall their CS was incredibly awful. I couldn't find any helpful info on their web site. And what if they want to charge me a "late return fee"???
Do big cable providers care about their old equipment?

For the first time ever I have a space in my house just for cocktail preparation. Awesome. I have some great old glass bottles to go on top of this bar. Also Awesome. What do I put in these bottles to become the envy of cocktail-makers-and-consumers everywhere? How do I best use this space
) both in terms of keeping stuff on hand and visual appeal, base liquors, mixers, tools, garnishes, etc. Assume we'll drink anything, but the fussier and old fashioned, the better. [more inside]

I recently accepted a sales position within a company that sells laboratory equipment. (i.e. centrifuges, GC's, HPLC's, Thermal Cyclers, etc) I have no previous lab or science experience, so learning about a myriad of highly technical products/methods is a quite challenging. My main challenge comes from the fact that I need to engage in conversations with scientists, chemists, biologists on a daily basis. With no previous lab experience, I've been having a hard time talking to them on technical level. [more inside]

What kind of equipment could I purchase within a $300 budget for the backdrop and lighting? My house is naturally very dark. I use white plates and minimal props for the food. My camera is a Canon 40D. I don't have much time lately so I'll spend a little more for convenience. [more inside]

Please help a luddite watch TV. I know the state of the art in TV options has come a long way since my family decided that cable + TiVo was the right solution for us a decade ago. Now we have a new place and I want to set it up right but I get overwhelmed when I go to research the options. Can you help me make sense of it and stop wasting a ton of money on cable? [more inside]

I have a weightlifting rack which is made of square, 2" steel tubing.
What's the easiest way to attach a pullup bar to it?
More generally, what are good ways to attach things to it in general? I'm thinking both of pre-made and DIY.
Bonus points for suggesting novel things to attach.

I have a Betacam-SP UWV 1800-p player/recorder. I cannot think of any use for it. Would it suit a college AV department ? Or a museum ? I'd like to see it find a good home, but I will settle for getting rid of it. Can any Mefiers recommend a next step ?

M-Audio Keystation 88ES Midi Controller
-- a good choice at a reasonable price?
I got GREAT advice here a little while ago re: KWK speakers and this is the next piece to be purchased for my son at college (includes a Macbook & a DUET interface). Is this a good choice at the price? I like the fact that it has 88 keys.

Hi, it's your friendly neighborhood biotech lab-equipment-monkey again. In a continuation of the centrifuge saga
, now that we've confirmed the unit will probably work with a proper rotor installed, I am on a quest to track down and acquire said rotor. Nobody seems to be selling it new anymore, and the ones I've found used are all missing crucial parts! Do I need better search-fu, or is it time to call the glue factory for this big old spinny beast? Halp! [more inside]

I'd like to set up a stolen photo equipment database. Ideally it would be searchable by brand, serial number, model, date, etc. What would be the best way to go about this for someone without technical expertise? No programming skills, limited html knowledge. Ideas are very welcome.

In high school, you (a dude) were an athlete, and in great shape. Then came college, and then graduate school, and then all of the busyness of career, marriage and two small children. Four years ago, you had a brief flare-up of athleticism (ran a 10k, two half-marathons, and a very slow full marathon).
Now, things are worse then ever. You are heaver than you've ever been, have no energy, and are not looking so great.
You know you need to work out, and watch what you eat, that this needs to be a way of life, no more excuses, there are no shortcuts, and all that.
You also just found yourself in posession of a $100 gift card to Amazon.com. How do you spend it? [more inside]
