Dear mefites, I've got an unavoidable carbon-heavy trip ahead of me, and am feeling terribly guilty about it. I'm against carbon offsetting for companies on the whole, and am wary about it on the individual level. People excusing polluting by saying "hey, I'm planting trees" is silly. However, three of us can't avoid taking three flights and a ferry trip next year, and would like to put some money towards a project that will reduce more carbon than we are responsible for. So, what to do?

The sophisticated engineering, delicate structure and graceful flight of solar-powered aircraft is a beautiful vision in efficiency. A formation of fighter jets makes the very skies thunder and the ground shake, exciting in its power. This dichotomy is everywhere, especially machine racing sports.
So where can environmentalists and energy efficiency enthusiasts get the excitement of power without the indulgence of excessive wastefulness? And where can people who love seeing jaw-dropping power get fired up by green technology without having to develop an appreciation for boring economy?

I am working towards developing an energy education for local schools in Northern California. Does anybody have any helpful resources or places I should look?
Unfortunately, I don't have anything to narrow the search as this could encompass anything from k-12. Resources can include curriculum, print outs, science kits (within a reasonable budget), competitions, etc... Pretty much anything that would get kids interested in renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Any and all help would be appreciated!

These should be industry titans who went against the grain in emphasizing environmentalism as part of their business model.
