home office tranquility vs. landlord

how can I restrict my landlord's access to my suite, which is also my home office. i'm leaving a month from now. he wants to be able to show it between 9 and 5 every day, and call a couple of hours in advance. here's the relevant section of the BC residential tenancy act:

Landlord's right to enter rental unit restricted

29 (1) A landlord must not enter a rental unit that is subject to a tenancy agreement for any purpose unless one of the following applies:

(a) the tenant gives permission at the time of the entry or not more than 30 days before the entry;

(b) at least 24 hours and not more than 30 days before the entry, the landlord gives the tenant written notice that includes the following information:

(i) the purpose for entering, which must be reasonable;

(ii) the date and the time of the entry, which must be between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. unless the tenant otherwise agrees;

(c) the landlord provides housekeeping or related services under the terms of a written tenancy agreement and the entry is for that purpose and in accordance with those terms;

(d) the landlord has an order of the director authorizing the entry;

(e) the tenant has abandoned the rental unit;

(f) an emergency exists and the entry is necessary to protect life or property.

(2) A landlord may inspect a rental unit monthly in accordance with subsection (1) (b).
i'd like to be able to limit the landlord's window of entry to a particular time of day so that i don't have to put up with intrusions at irregular times, and i sure as hell don't want to give blanket permission for him enter whenever he wants over the next 30 days. am i within my rights tell him when he can enter?

as i understand it, he needs to notify my at least 24 hours in advance of each intrusion, but i don't know if i have any control over when he enters.

My precious girlfriend is too exquisite for words.

If actions are doubtlessly mightier than words, would this person be considered trustworthy? I have a friend who has been in a long distance relationship for about a year while her boyfriend is working abroad and waiting for her to go to school where he is. Boyfriend has come home to visit her many times, and visa versa. They are definitley an exclusive couple but they appear to be cut from different cloths. She grew up around all sorts of social butterflies who understand certain types of obligation in relationships, while his behavior in relationships is not always conventional. Recently, she found his address book on his computer. Entries consisted of mostly women, and notes about them containing details of how 'amazing' or 'exquisite' they are. When she saw her name, there were no descriptions or words describing her beauty. He is a decent and somewhat nerdy person who treats her like gold, and he has regularly told her how beautiful, smart, amazing, exquisite, funny, talented, etc. she is in real life (same list of adjectives)...in addition to going out of his way to do nice/cute things for her and spending lots of money on her. But if he really has such strong feelings for her&only her, why wouldn't he write it down, the way he wrote about the other 'friends'? If he thought she was so mysterious and intriguing and dear to his heart, why wouldn't he think of her when he was writing about other people? Is this normal behavior for couples to not acknowledge each other in addressbooks? Since they are already so familiar with each other do they not need to 'remember' each others' qualities in notes (the way one would need to remember friends from foreign countries)? She believes he would never physically cheat on her, but is this 'emotional cheating'? As long as they both know in their minds that they are the Only Ones for each other, should she let actions always speak louder than words and forget about it or should she talk about it with him? What is a reasonable response to this?

I just want to go fast but it turns out bikes are more complicated that that

Bikefilter: Trying to get into road cycling for the first time. Trying to pick up the (strange) conventions of pricing and choices. Help! Ok, so I am a runner with plantar fasciitis, who decided that cycling might help relieve some of my workout load. I cycled to school and for transportation in college, and occasional bailing aside, I really like it. So here I am, trying to buy my first road bike.

After perusing the bike forums, I have decided that I have about 600-650 to spend on a bike, leaving me about 150 to spend on extra stuff (jersey, pump, water bottles, cage, etc). So, I've been looking at a Giant OCR3, Felt Z90, Z100, and a Trek 1.2, all listed at list price of 750ish.

However, reading bike forums and sites, I keep seeing these bikes listed as $600 dollar bikes. I am confused. Even at the bike shop, these bikes are 720+!!! The only exception I found was with a 2008 OCR3. Am I getting ripped off (as I expect) by the local bike shops? Is there some kind of pricing scheme where most shops hack off a good 10-15% from list price?

After also trying to navigate the used market, I am really frustrated. I know what I need. I need an aluminum or steel frame, 2007 or newer to prevent "surprises" (dead cables, messed up clip pedals, etc) and sora/tiagra components or better. They are low end, they will all feel relatively the same to me.... who cares! I just want to get something with relatively good value, so I can resell to upgrade, and so I don't have to go to the shop every five minutes. In fact, the only reason I am considering new first, is because I don't want my bike to break 10 miles from home, or take my "new to me" bike to the shop and spend 400 making it roadworthy, right off the bat.

Too many choices, too much conflicting information. If someone can provide a general strategy and what to expect in actually purchasing a new, low end road bike, (including haggling) I'd be thankful forever. Thanks!

Can I change the flight of entry into Japan, after obtaining the visa?

Does anyone here know what documents, besides your passport and visa, are needed at the border entry into Japan? I will go to Japan this September. I have recently obtained my visa, after a process which included submitting to the Japanese embassy a dossier of files, which included my scheduled itinerary in Japan, my hotel reservation, my flight reservation, proof of money etc.

My question is: are these documents checked upon entry in Japan? I know that the visa is not a guarantee of being allowed entrance into the country.

The reason I ask is that I have just found that if I fly through Nagoya instead of Tokyo, the cost of the flight is halved. But my dossier says that I'm arriving through Tokyo, via a certain airline.

Could I change my flight, or would that cause me trouble at the border and would probably make me go back home?

What is your experience at the Japanese border?

Thanks!

Drive to Mexico with just a drivers license?

Can I drive in and out of Mexico with just my drivers license? I'm visiting a friend in California and we thought we might drive down to Mexico for the day. However, I have heard that the entry/exit rules have changed this year and you can no longer make the trip with just your drivers license. Is this true? Has anyone tried this in the last month or so? Are they adamant about this or is it strongly suggested but not required? If I manage to get into Mexico with only my DL will I be able to get back out?

New Steps at Side Door

I need new steps at the side door of my house. Who should I get to build/install them, and what should they be made out of? I need new steps leading to the side entrance of my house. Currently we have a set of wooden stairs (3 or 4 steps) going from the side door down to ground level. I'm not sure how they are attached to the side of the house, but on the ground they are actually sitting on two bricks, not actually resting on the ground. They were obviously a temporary solution by the previous owners of our home, and the time has come to replace them.

We use this door as the primary entrance to our home, as it's next to the driveway, so the steps need to be sturdy to stand up to a lot of use. I'm not sure what material we should look for - concrete? Or some sort of wood composite? Our front stoop is made of brick with slate on the stairs and top surface, but for the side door we don't need anything fancy.

I don't even know what type of craftsman or contractor to look for to build new steps. I know it would depend on the type of material used, but I'm not even sure where to begin looking. I'm a member of Angie's List, so once I have a general category I like to check on there for specific recommendations.

Botched Cannes entry.

I submitted two films to Cannes. The next morning I noticed that the two DVD packages I prepared with the entry numbers and everything were still in my bag. Whoops! Looks like I sent them unmarked discs. The cases I sent them have my contact info and the envelopes I shipped them in have the entry numbers written on them, but the actual DVDs are completely blank. Should I send a new package or will that confuse things further?

Immovable Type?

Movable Type question involving the counting and sequential numbering of entries within one specific blog on a multi-blog system. Let's say I have six Movable Type blogs on the same system/install, each containing 100 entries.* I create a new seventh blog, with only 5 entries in that one. Within the individual entry archive template for the seventh blog, how do I structure my tags to output "this is entry #N of 5 in this blog" on the resulting pages? (N would be replaced by the actual sequential order of that entry in the blog, such as "3 of 5", "4 of 5", etc., as determined by either the entry's published date or just the sequence in which the entry was added to the blog, it doesn't matter.)

It sounds simple (and maybe I'm missing something here), but the only likely tag I've found for this, MTEntryID, exports the system ID of the entry in question (which could be #703 or something, or 000703 if you use leading zeroes). That is, it's being counted sequentially relative to the overall install/system, and not to the one blog in which I'm interested.

I can get a total count of entries within just the seventh blog -- the "...of 5..." part -- using MTBlogEntryCount, so that's no problem. But isn't there something similarly blog-specific with regards to entry numbering?

*In actuality, the largest MT install I manage has 95 blogs on it and over 400,000 comments.

I need to generate many neutral pseudonyms.

Renaming myself in grey. I need to come up with an ongoing supply of carefully neutral yet non-random (and non-lame) pseudonyms, for judging processes that require anonymous entry.
Many competitions & opportunities in my field use anonymous entry (the work samples are marked not with your name but with a pseudonym; your name goes only on the application form or in a sealed envelope).

It's harder than it might sound to come up with an ongoing supply of really usable pseudonyms (and clearly it's not ideal to re-use them across multiple competitions).

The goal in each case is a pseudonym that doesn't detract or distract from my work in any way, and doesn't imply I'm part of any category against which the judges might have a conscious or unconscious bias. In other words, it should be ALL of these things:
• gender-neutral
• ethnicity-neutral and geography-neutral
• age-neutral (not strongly implying I'm part of any given generation)
• not cutesy, self-referential or otherwise "clever" (since clever for one person is annoying/lame for another)
• not anything that seems to be a cipher or puzzle, or otherwise divert attention by inspiring an instinct to figure it out (so I think this precludes totally random character strings).

Thanks for any ideas re. pseudonym-generating strategies or conventions!

This question is about coming up with usable pseudoyms -- not about whether competitions should be run this way / whether competitions are useful / etc.

How can I extend the range of my keyless entry remote, or buy a new one?

How can I extend the range of my car's keyless entry? Or what should I buy that has a longer range? I have a ford focus which I bought with a keyless entry built in. However, both remotes are short range, and I am one of those people who can't find their car without a long range keyless entry.

I possibly want to buy a keyless entry remote that is longer range, but it seems like they all need a lot of installation invovling cutting wires and such. Do I need to do that even though I already have a keyless entry setup? Will my current setup be replaced? If I can just "add" the remote on, like the car manual says, that would be great, but where can I buy a keyless entry system that is just the remote and not the "installation kit and video"?

Earn money from home!

Jobs my friend could do with a laptop and an internet connection? (i.e., data-entry from home?) I have a wonderful friend who has spent the last year in constant pain, due to a mysterious back injury. She is finally getting back on her feet (quite literally), which is wonderful. However, she's still far from "fully functional".

She's an activist, and a good one. When she is healthy again, she plans to return to her previous occupation--helping poor folks in Palestine. For the moment, however, she's still too sick to leave the house for more than an hour or two (and sometimes needs to rest all day). This makes it rather difficult to find a job, as you might imagine. She has no professional internet-type skills (e.g., she's not a programmer or graphic designer, &c.).

The one bit of good news is that she isn't too concerned about salary--after spending years on an activist's stipend, she's quite used to living in poverty. She does need rent money, money for medication, &c., however. And yes, she's applied for disability, but has no idea about how long that will take / whether she'll qualify.

This post is prompted by the revelation that another friend happens to have a job just like she's looking for--apparently he gets a list of data in an email, and he manually enters it into a database every day, from his laptop. I'd never heard of anything like that before, and it sounds way too good to be true, but he's been doing it for a while now. Maybe there are other jobs like it? Maybe you know about them, or could point me in a useful direction.

Installing a Pre-hung door.

Installing a pre hung door. Or rather filling the hole you put in your new house when you decided to replace the door. This weekend while we were painting the house before we moved in I noticed that one of the back doors to the house was actually an interior door. Having my father with me eager for a project and doing a *bit* of research it seemed like a fairly easy proposition to purchase a pre hung door and install it ourselves. It is not.

The demo went fine, installed the new footer and entry way that was rotten, insured it was flat and level for the prehung door. I went with a steel door with 8 panels of double paned glass to match some other doors in the house.

So we get to the actual installig of the door, did a test fit of the door in the structure, pull it out, remove the unnecessary packaging and insure there is .5 inch of clearance all around the frame, and shim it in (doing the leveling dance and following the manufacturers instructions for the shim points. Here is where we hit problems.

Is there any special trick to get these suckers in? We had adequate clearance all around to isolate the door from the structure, but it keeps twisting, and we can't seem to get the door to open cleanly after it's been shimmed in.

I'm a bit stuck here, after 5 hours of wrestling with it yesterday with my dad and the fiancee's dad I'm about ready to call a carpenter and beg for assistance. I'm sure we're just doing something totally boneheaded and missing a critical step in the process, but nothing stands out.

Legitimate Work From Home

Are there any work from home, (data entry) part time jobs out there I can do?....Or are they all scams? I don't work anylonger and my S/O has a good enough job that I don't have to...sometimes I feel guilty about this and feel I need to contribute financially. Are there any reputable companies out there I could get involved with to do data entry work at home?

Montreal is cold - Need Compensation

My apartment has had no heat (which is included) since the beginning of the month. Basically the landlord has had no furnace for about a year and has only this past month started installing everything. I'm not sure how to proceed with compensation. I have talked to him about it and he claims that he has been dealing with the people since May and they have only recently been able to start work on it. He says that there isn't much he can do and though the work is finally finished, they now have to wait for the city to make some modifications on the line as well.

I'm pretty pissed off, it has been very cold (Montreal, Que, Canada) and it's been hard to live. My girlfriend isn't so happy to come by (still does though, whew) and my roomate is more or less irrate. Apparently someone in the building is talking to the Housing people.

My roomate is demanding that I ask for a reduction in rent, I'm having trouble figuring out how much though and how to put it out there; my roomate is more clueless.

Any suggestions on how I can go about this one?
