In this story in the NYT
about how the Knicks decide who gets courtside seats and what they have to do for them, there's a throwaway line that Michael J. Fox's memoir discusses "the celebrity-camaraderie phenomenon wherein they all know one another, even if they don’t." I've always been fascinated by that. Other than that memoir (of course), is there any good writing about that subject? I could imagine that a smart actor, or even better a screenwriter or newly-made comedian or assistant or some other behind the scenes person, has described how this language and code of behavior is taught and practiced, and who is allowed to play the game.

My younger brother, a rising senior in high school, will be visiting me in the Bay Area next week. We will have 2-3 days to spend in the city (really, any place accessible by Caltrain). I need an itinerary of fun places to check out. The main criteria are that anything you recommend should be easily accessible by public transport, not too remote, and also immediately spectacular for teenage boys and other people without particular interests. Yes: museums with minimal reading, weird architecture, cable cars, great views, robots and video games, and so on. No: major league sports, "funky boutiques," "must-eat restaurants." The rest of our week will be mostly spent outdoors, so indoors is OK. Thanks for suggestions!

I have a slight curvature in my spine however, it seriously put my whole body out of alignment. I discovered my body was misaligned upon looking in a reverse mirrored image of myself when trying on a bathing suit as a 15 year old. I'm much older now, but since the problem was never treated, my skeletal structure is the same, if not worse. This presents a problem in my field of work as a performer. I'm a busty woman with slender hips and because of my bust, its more pronounced. A view of my left side from a third degree angle looks amazing. Looks feminine and tall. However, the view from the right on a third degree angle looks boyish and collapsed. I see pictures of myself performing and it makes me cringe when angles of my right side are taken. My structure look deformed and I feel is limiting my opportunities to go further in my industry. I'm having a hard time deciding which doctor to see since I don't have health insurance. I would really love to correct this problem but I don't know where to start. Please help!

I saw the coolest little foursquare toy, kind of a portable mini-court, yesterday at the park. I wish I'd stopped and talked to the guys playing with it, but I thought I could find it pretty easily... but not so.
So there's a little trampoline, I guess that's about two feet square, with a circular wall around it divided into four sections. They had a ball smaller than a kickball but bigger than a tennis ball, and if they hit it on the trampoline and it went between one person's section of the bordering wall, then it was like it had hit their square.
Does anybody know what this? I must have one. Immediately.

In the late 80's early 90's there was a device you could use while watching television. From what I remember, this device required some type of subscription and allowed you to play along while watching game shows and sporting events. It was black, had buttons on the sides, and a basic LED screen in the middle with an extendable radio antenna. Does anyone know what this device was? What the name of it was?

One of the downsides of being born in mid-January is that it's always snowing, which leads to a certain inertia when it comes to birthday parties. People don't like to expend the effort to come to a birthday until they think it's going to be exceptionally fun. [more inside]

My mom just had her third surgery to repair hip tendons and its expected that she will not be able to go anywhere without 2 crutches for 6-8 weeks. Besides limiting mobility, it also means that she won't be able to cook for some time--her lifelong passion and joie de vivre, besides plants.
If she were nearby i would go spend time with her, but she's across the Atlantic (France, I'm in the US).
I'm trying to think of ways to cheer her up, make life easier, ease the tedium. [more inside]

My wife's sister and her new husband live near us in Atlanta. We haven't been that good about spending time with them and are looking for ideas for activities that we could all do together. I guess we're ideally looking for things that are fun, but where everyone can still talk and get to know each other. Bonus points if you can throw in a few ideas that might also be fun for our 4 year old son.

Help me with games/activities for my mom's 75th birthday party. My sisters and I are planning a birthday party for my mom. There will 60 people there, ages 5 - 80. She doesnt want people just standing around bored and would like some games. We are already spending more than we budgeted on food and drink. Please suggest some no cost or extremely low cost entertainment ideas. Two of us will be flying into town a couple days before the party and the other sister who lives in town is also planning a high school graduation party for her son and just added a year old foster child to her brood of six kids so most planning will need to be done remotely. We're having a Fiesta theme so bonus points for taking that into account.
