Hi everyone! My work is sending me to DC to, you know, get that whole federal government thing straightened out. What fun things are going on on the evenings of the 16th, 17th and 18th? Or, where do I look to find such things? Thanks!
Hey There Brilliant People!
Could you please send me any film, tv or play suggestions that are about women going through pregnancy, the affect that has on their marriage, and women who work with doulas and midwives while pregnant?
Thanks so much!
With all of the technology and information at our fingertips, I am having finding the best way to watch movies. There are no longer any video stores near me.
I have amazon prime, HBOgo and Netflix & my cable company on demand. It seems like every time that I want to see a movie it is not on Netflix or HBOgo, but is on Prime. [more inside]

In the next few weeks, I will need to attend a series of late-running formal dinners... with a five-year-old in tow. Please recommend your most magical, engrossing, dinner-table-friendly activity books, games, small toys, etc. for the early school-aged set, so we can keep her quietly in her seat and out of everyone's hair. Our 17 year old cousin is coming to visit. He comes from a sheltered environment, not allowed to watch TV at home, and they don't have wifi. We'd like to enjoy some really good TV together.
I'm looking for good quality shows that are sophisticated and fun, with minimal romantic/sexual content. On the kid's last visit, he really enjoyed the Firefly and Justified series. [more inside]
I'm trying to put together a set of performances from various reality/contest shows (e.g., American Idol, Shark Tank) that provide good examples of the following four scenarios:
1. Contestant appears very confident/proud, performs very well.
2. Contestant appears very confident/proud, performs very poorly.
3. Contestant appears very nervous/embarrassed, performs very well.
4. Contestant appears very nervous/embarrassed, performs very poorly.
I'm very grateful for any and all suggestions. Thanks!

A friend will be in hospital over shabbat and asked me if I could send her links of things she can print out this afternoon and read over shabbes. She is super smart but realized that the serious intellectual/political essays and articles she'd printed are not what she is feeling like. She wants short, fun, easy, diverting, distracting. It seems like a lot of radio stations these days try to be provocative. There are many to choose from. Listening to a snarky station for any length of time is very irritating, so I've never really done a preview of lots of different stations. [more inside]
My little indoor cat used to LOVE watching the birds visit the bird feeder in the garden at our old house. We recently moved house and unfortunately the same bird feeder has become an issue... we have a green belt behind our new place and the bird feeder, well, it's attracting rats! [more inside]
I don't seem to have the attention span for books, TV series and movies anymore, and I'm missing out on a lot of good entertainment, as well as having a general feeling of being culturally 'out of it'. How can I increase my attention span and start getting into long-form entertainment again? [more inside]
I'm looking for good TV shows that have a short season (9-10 episodes absolute maximum) with episodes that are 30 minutes or less. A mini-series of 3-5 episodes that is available on Amazon Prime would be ideal. Does this exist?!
In this story in the NYT
about how the Knicks decide who gets courtside seats and what they have to do for them, there's a throwaway line that Michael J. Fox's memoir discusses "the celebrity-camaraderie phenomenon wherein they all know one another, even if they don’t." I've always been fascinated by that. Other than that memoir (of course), is there any good writing about that subject? I could imagine that a smart actor, or even better a screenwriter or newly-made comedian or assistant or some other behind the scenes person, has described how this language and code of behavior is taught and practiced, and who is allowed to play the game.

My younger brother, a rising senior in high school, will be visiting me in the Bay Area next week. We will have 2-3 days to spend in the city (really, any place accessible by Caltrain). I need an itinerary of fun places to check out. The main criteria are that anything you recommend should be easily accessible by public transport, not too remote, and also immediately spectacular for teenage boys and other people without particular interests. Yes: museums with minimal reading, weird architecture, cable cars, great views, robots and video games, and so on. No: major league sports, "funky boutiques," "must-eat restaurants." The rest of our week will be mostly spent outdoors, so indoors is OK. Thanks for suggestions!

I have a slight curvature in my spine however, it seriously put my whole body out of alignment. I discovered my body was misaligned upon looking in a reverse mirrored image of myself when trying on a bathing suit as a 15 year old. I'm much older now, but since the problem was never treated, my skeletal structure is the same, if not worse. This presents a problem in my field of work as a performer. I'm a busty woman with slender hips and because of my bust, its more pronounced. A view of my left side from a third degree angle looks amazing. Looks feminine and tall. However, the view from the right on a third degree angle looks boyish and collapsed. I see pictures of myself performing and it makes me cringe when angles of my right side are taken. My structure look deformed and I feel is limiting my opportunities to go further in my industry. I'm having a hard time deciding which doctor to see since I don't have health insurance. I would really love to correct this problem but I don't know where to start. Please help!
What are the best games (both classic and new) for two people? Specifically, fun, not super challenging, about 30 minutes to 2 hours per session.
Primarily seeking board games and card games, but video games for mobile or console are welcome too. [more inside]
I saw the coolest little foursquare toy, kind of a portable mini-court, yesterday at the park. I wish I'd stopped and talked to the guys playing with it, but I thought I could find it pretty easily... but not so.
So there's a little trampoline, I guess that's about two feet square, with a circular wall around it divided into four sections. They had a ball smaller than a kickball but bigger than a tennis ball, and if they hit it on the trampoline and it went between one person's section of the bordering wall, then it was like it had hit their square.
Does anybody know what this? I must have one. Immediately.
What are the most fun things to do in Melbourne on holiday? I've got 4 days as a solo female traveller in my 30s. I'm not into footy but open to shopping, good places to eat (cheaply), cultural things and tourist attractions. Inspire me!
Spontaneous weekend road trip tomorrow, 9 hour drive in each direction (that's the distance to the closest city from our remote location). If I had more time I would comb through various podcasts to pick out ones I think I'd like, but this time I could use your help. [more inside]
In the late 80's early 90's there was a device you could use while watching television. From what I remember, this device required some type of subscription and allowed you to play along while watching game shows and sporting events. It was black, had buttons on the sides, and a basic LED screen in the middle with an extendable radio antenna. Does anyone know what this device was? What the name of it was?

One of the downsides of being born in mid-January is that it's always snowing, which leads to a certain inertia when it comes to birthday parties. People don't like to expend the effort to come to a birthday until they think it's going to be exceptionally fun. [more inside]
My mom just had her third surgery to repair hip tendons and its expected that she will not be able to go anywhere without 2 crutches for 6-8 weeks. Besides limiting mobility, it also means that she won't be able to cook for some time--her lifelong passion and joie de vivre, besides plants.
If she were nearby i would go spend time with her, but she's across the Atlantic (France, I'm in the US).
I'm trying to think of ways to cheer her up, make life easier, ease the tedium. [more inside]

My wife's sister and her new husband live near us in Atlanta. We haven't been that good about spending time with them and are looking for ideas for activities that we could all do together. I guess we're ideally looking for things that are fun, but where everyone can still talk and get to know each other. Bonus points if you can throw in a few ideas that might also be fun for our 4 year old son.

Help me with games/activities for my mom's 75th birthday party. My sisters and I are planning a birthday party for my mom. There will 60 people there, ages 5 - 80. She doesnt want people just standing around bored and would like some games. We are already spending more than we budgeted on food and drink. Please suggest some no cost or extremely low cost entertainment ideas. Two of us will be flying into town a couple days before the party and the other sister who lives in town is also planning a high school graduation party for her son and just added a year old foster child to her brood of six kids so most planning will need to be done remotely. We're having a Fiesta theme so bonus points for taking that into account.
