Please suggest some short media for confidence and encouragement.

I’m trying to wrap up some big stuff these days and could use some media to boast confidence, courage, and focus. Brief prose, poetry, non-fiction, religious texts, and music would be welcome. I'd prefer to avoid longer things in order to save time. Thanks!

Stories of people finding success/fulfillment late in life?

Family member is now retired and seemingly convinced that life is basically over. I am looking for stories of people who continued (or started) to do meaningful work during the years of 60+, especially if that work or activity is of the non-professional, unpaid variety. [more inside]

Success stories where "one that got away" was really not "the one?"

Are there any success stories of people who have gotten over relationships that you /know/ could have been fixed if circumstances had been different and have gone on to find greater happiness, especially with successful, committed relationships? I am worried that my recent relationship is going to turn into one of those "the one that got away" situations, and he's made it clear he doesn't want to work on it anymore, so I can't do anything about that. I had thought I would be settling down in a city with a long term partner by now, and the fact that that is not happening is really tough to handle. Help!!! I need encouragement. [more inside]

"Late" to the game - Cultural/Therapy/Educational Qu. - Snowstorm?

Hey folks. I'm having some hang ups lately about arriving "late" to some areas of culture and life. I'm also still in a "phase" where I am reaching out, establishing new social circles, and attempting to validate a sense of self(I just* turned 24). Largely, I am wondering if any Mefites happen to recall stories of success, especially on a grand scale, of folks who pursued passions academic or not, a wee bit later in life and still fought/worked/finessed a means of becoming successful/happy/prolific in their fields or passions - especially after a means of difficult time or trauma. Super inspiration, please? Motive to keep going, work harder, even if you feel like you've been pretty beaten up/down and out for a little while? Stories of life-changing occurrences or pick-ups in character/pace, in a positive/radical/tremendous way? [more inside]

poetry for the hard times

I am looking for 'healing' poetry: poems that 1) urge you to keep going, 2) tell you that yes, life is hard, but you can do it, 3) remind you to keep your shit together, 4) embrace you and say that you are not alone in this, or 5) just say that this too shall pass. [more inside]

How to rock her world

A good friend of mine is going through a rough patch and I want to make her a cd of encouraging music. I'm starting with Don't Stop Me Now by Queen, one of her favorite bands, but I don't know where to go from there. She likes all kinds of music, particularly ska, and she's a fabulous singer and always appreciates a talented vocalist (plus a song with positive "I rock"-type lyrics to sing along to would be perfect). Suggestions?

DC to DUX, can't be that hard, right?

I moved across the country for a dream job at my alma mater, my job's funding was cut and I am now unemployed. I have no benefits and am losing my place at the end of the month. I don't have a lot of money but I have decided to make a go of Eugene, Oregon. I have applied to some temp places, but what else should I be doing as a professional fundraiser and broadcast journalist to find work and get my life together?
