If I posted AskMes with any great frequency, this could be construed as a waste of a question, but: That Zalgo thread. What do I need to do to see it properly? I'm on xp/ff3.5 and I'm seeing little boxes with numbers in them.

I just ordered the updated Mac Mini, and I'm looking around for an external box that I can plug analog or DV sources into to capture video. The main purpose would be to capture a lot of old material on VHS and Hi8 tape that is getting well past expiration date. If it could tune into cable or over-the-air tv, that'd be great, but it's really just capturing/encoding video from external sources (RCA,S-Video,DV) that it needs to do well. I have one of these things for inputting analog/outputting digital audio, and it works great with its parent application. I'm hoping to find something similar in quality for video. My price point is $200-400. Does anyone have experience using something like this, that they'd care to recommend?

iMovie help! I've converted a VHS tape to digital format using EyeTV Plus on my iMac. I've followed the steps to convert the file to iMovie using the EyeTV program. This creates a iMovie project file and 22 5-minute clips in a .dv format. Problems arise when I open iMovie to start editing. [more inside]

I need a program for ripping DVDs to get past the encoding (I think that's the term). I've got most of them covered by my DVD Ripper, but I'm having some trouble on a few. [more inside]

I'd like to legally buy DVDs of a British television series. Unfortunately, they're only available as Region 2 discs and are encoded (I think) as PAL. Is there a convenient way to play them on my new iMac and OS X 10.5.5?

There have been a few questions along these lines, but no definitive answers as yet. I'm hoping that there's been some software innovation since those last posts that someone can point me to. [more inside]

In working through a tutorial for Amazon's Simple Storage Service, I'm stuck on two steps. The first step is to base64-encode my policy file... and the second step is to generate a signature value (SHA-1 HMAC) with my Amazon Secret Access key as a password. Am I going about it correctly? FirefoxFilter: On certain sites, Firefox (for Vista) displays an accented lowercase i instead of an apostrophe. The HTML for the sites in question calls for UTF-8 encoding, which is what Firefox says it's using. Why is this happening? [more inside]

I have what appears to be a word file (no file extension) that was generated on a mac and sent to me via email. I am trying to open it up on a Windows box with Office XP but there appears to be a problem with Office recognizing the file encoding. Is there an easy fix using the PC (no access to a mac) that can be done pretty quickly?

I regularly use ffmpeg to encode videos (from mpeg2 to mpeg4) for my ipod. I've been doing this for nearly a year with no problems. Now, every time I start an encode, my system is suddenly under a lot of pressure - I can't use any other application. If I go into the windows task manager and set the priority to 'below normal', all is fine again. Anyone have any idea why this change might have occured, or any idea how I can get around it (preferably without using task manager)? [more inside]

I'm having issues playing back music. I just bought a brand new 12" powerbook to replace one that was stolen several weeks back. I am told by a friend at Apple that I can watch different zone DVDs 5 times, and on the 5th viewing the machine will permanently set to whatever region that DVD is encoded to. Is there no way to undo this encoding? For example, if I foolishly, for example, allowed a friend to use the machine and he watched 5 Korean DVDs, am I stuck with that region forever?
