Does an arbitration trump the illegality of non-compete requirement?

I was offered a job with a crazy non-compete condition in the agreement, but as you may know such requirements are illegal in the State of California. HOWEVER, there is an 'Employment Condition' that requires all disputes to be settled via arbitration. If an arbitrator decides to enforce a non-compete clause in California, does that somehow override the illegality of it, since generally, arbitrators have 'final say' and courts 'cant overturn' decisions made via arbitration? Fired Right Before Benefits Eligible--Lawful?

Someone I know was fired on Saturday, 9/29, from his hourly job. He was eligible to start receiving benefits (after the six month waiting period) on 10/1. We live in a at-will state and I know you can be fired or quit for most any reason. I'm not wondering about the reason he was fired--I am wondering about the timing of it. It seems to me that the company conveniently got rid of him right before he became benefit-eligible as a cost-saving measure, and I am curious if this is in any way unlawful? We are in Georgia.

Help me figure out my obligations in notice-giving and moving to a new job.

My employment agreement specifies a mutual notice-giving of 30 days between myself and an employer should either of us wish me to move on, but Virginia is an at-will state. How enforceable is the agreement from either direction? I fear that my employer is putting me at a disadvantage with respect to my moving on (It's hard to find potential future employers who will accept 30 days' delay on the start date) that it might end up they won't be held accountable to if they should decide to give me the air. How do I find out if this agreement is at all enforceable? [more inside]
