Why are they specifically asking for a *non*-professional reference?

How liable am I if I was 'just following orders'.

I was told to falsify information at my job and then fired for it a year later. I received no training regarding the form that I was told to change and had no idea that it was considered a legal document. Do I have any recourse here or am I just a dumb rube who got played by higher-level bastards?

How would a contractor paid a weekly rate by Company X make ownership distinctions between works created for X and works for others?

I've been offered a new contract/consulting job where I would be paid not by the hour or for a specific deliverable, but at a flat weekly rate. Under this arrangement, how might I make intellectual property distinctions between works that will belong to this client, and outside works I may do for myself or others? [more inside]

I'm in the tech space, so most organizations work through recruiters, and I'm getting over a dozen calls and emails a day since posting my resume. I have just been offered a staff position at a large University of California campus. My very own NORAD

As part of my work for a client I've begun researching online privacy, cryptography, and other sundry ways of protecting oneself online. And I'm now completely creeped out and must switch NOW to uncrackable passwords, multiple email accounts, encrypting the crap out of everything I do, and generally making sure that only the things I want public on the internet are publicly accessible. But we run into the question - how do I do that without driving myself nuts trying to remember my passwords, convince everyone I know to use encrypted communication, and maintain a reasonable amount of privacy in my web surfing? And how do I do that after 8 years of webwhorage where I wasn't too concerned who knew what about me? [more inside]

HELP me help a TEACHER!

Help me help a TEACHER! I have a friend who has 25 years experience teaching French and German in a private school. She's a talented and extremely hard-working teacher, but receives little support, compensation (low-pay), and respect from the school's all male administrators. She feels very stuck-- and unable to change her situation. If she switched over to public schools, she'd likely have to start over, in terms of retirement years put in. And, like most teachers, she takes a LOT of work home-- and puts in 8-12 hours every weekend grading papers and even offering free tutoring. All of this is NOT compensated. She does it because she's diligent and loves her kids. I've been trying to convince her that her skills are VALUABLE and the PRIVATE SECTOR would love to have her language skills. AM I WRONG? Are there jobs in the corporate / non-profit / NGO fields which could use her French / German teaching / translation skills? I thank you and she'll thank you-- if we can help her get out of a dead-end job!

Anyone ever been employed by the Art Institutes?

Does anyone out there have any insight about the Art Institutes as an employer? Having worked mostly in the public sector, I am curious to what this private college's reputation is as far as job security, salaries, etc. is, and I haven't been able to find much online that was not generated by the Art Institutes themselves. Any information at all would be helpful, as I am not in a position where I can just go there and start asking current employees questions. Thank you.
