My firm has just announced one-week furloughs for most employees. What struck me as odd was that the email included an attachment labelled "Activities". When I opened it, it was a list: "Top 20 Things to do While on Furlough". Examples:
* Clean out your garage and other storage places and hold a garage sale.
* Go hiking with your pet.
* Renew your library card.
It's like management is just begging to be parodized. Alas, I have not the comedy chops to do it well. Anyone want to suggest some good parody "activities" I could pursue whilst on furlough?

My husband has been offered a great job in New York and we're looking to move out there in September (we're both British citizens currently living in the UK). He'll be on a work visa and I'll only have residence rights - can I work as self-employed, or freelance for a UK company, without a work visa? [more inside]

I am likely to soon get a job offer from Company A. Yesterday, Company B called to schedule an interview for a few weeks from now. I would prefer to work at Company B, but if I didn't get the job, I would want to work at Company A. How do I handle this delicate situation, seeing as we're talking about almost a month until I would have an answer from Company B? [more inside]

Asking for a friend: How might she go about finding gainful employment in Chicago? She's two years out of college, graphics design major, working for a printer in middle America, and wants the bright lights, big city. Marketing would be the dream job for her. Any advice? Recruiting agencies? Pounding the pavement? The Internet hasn't worked so well for her.

I find myself in the novel situation, upon being laid off, of having a large number of potential job opportunities. I'm in the tech space, so most organizations work through recruiters, and I'm getting over a dozen calls and emails a day since posting my resume. Many of the job descriptions look like a good fit, so I know I can have my pick of location, type of organization, benefits, salary, etc. It's quite early in my job hunt, and I have the leisure of about 2 months to do it in. I'm looking for tips about how to keep organized and be in control of the situation. [more inside]

I'd appreciate any and all advice associated with changing work environments -- whether practical advice (about little bits of personal business to remember, or health insurance crud), or mental/emotional advice (how to adjust internally), or sociological advice (how to smooth the transition into a new employee culture).
I also suck learning names -- hopefully they'll have nameplates, but anyone have tips for committing a large mass of names and faces to memory? [more inside]
