I'm in a job offer dilemma. I've verbally accepted an offer that i'm excited about. BUT, a job that I don't hesitate to say would be a dream company for me just had me interview again for one of two positions they are considering me for. Sounds like it is a slam dunk that i would get an offer from DreamCompany but it's the end of their quarter and they are wrangling a few details around, shifting head count, etc and won't have anything firm for a few more days but SortaExcitingCompany needs papers signed TODAY. Ugh - dilemma..... SortaExcitingCompany does not know anything is up yet. I'm tempted to see about getting a few days extension on the offer but worried about just retracting it all together. I know everything in the US is "at will" work anyway - but ethics still come into it for me at least.

I find myself in the novel situation, upon being laid off, of having a large number of potential job opportunities. I'm in the tech space, so most organizations work through recruiters, and I'm getting over a dozen calls and emails a day since posting my resume. Many of the job descriptions look like a good fit, so I know I can have my pick of location, type of organization, benefits, salary, etc. It's quite early in my job hunt, and I have the leisure of about 2 months to do it in. I'm looking for tips about how to keep organized and be in control of the situation. [more inside]

Unfortunately, I'm coming up empty handed after several months of a full-court press, and I'm thinking it's time to contact headhunting/recruiting agencies that might be interested in someone like me. Can anyone recommend a recruitment or temp agency that specialises in placing 'creative' types in Adelaide or Melbourne, Australia? I currently work in Admin and wouldn't mind doing the same job elsewhere, if only it was with people who were more cosmopolitan and less conservative than my current job. I was thinking something in the publishing or entertainment industries but anything associated with this general area is also OK. Ideally I'd be hoping to use my 'in' in the industry to help me further my own agenda: writing, with a specialisation in writing about music and counterculture.

I'm working as a contractor. Recently management has decided that they will not pay overtime for contractors only. What we are to do is report the 40 hours to our respective agencies, and anything over that to our admin. Comp time is given equal to the amount you worked over 40 hours, not as time and a half. I asked if our agencies had been notified, and no one knew. Is the comp time policy legal?

How can I ask my recruiter if he has been notified and if so, should I have this added to my contract? My current contract states I get time and a half overtime for any hours over 40 a week. How do I address this without looking like a greedy malcontent?

I've recently moved into a new cubicle with new neighbours. The problem is, there are now 2 women in a very close vicinity to me who are constantly laughing all day long and it grates on my nerves. [mi]

These two women do not work in the same department as me (we share the office space with other unrelated business units) and I rarely have any interaction with them except an occasional "hi" and "bye" at the door. I've spoken with other people around me, and they feel much the same way as me but perhaps not as strongly.

I've taken the liberty of buying a set of headphones and listening to music while I work to try and drown them out. But their laughing is extremely high-pitched and even when I crank up the music, I can STILL hear them! It also makes me out to look like a slacker and I can't hear when people come up from behind me to ask me stuff.

Their laughing breaks my concentration and I can hear the other woman taking personal calls all day long and she speaks loud enough that I can hear her whole conversation.

That being said, how can I improve my office situation without coming off looking whiny or creating any enemies around me?
