My friend has been in a job in NY State for close to 2 years. From the start her salary was substantially lower than she felt she should be paid and she was verbally promised a bonus which never materialized. Nevertheless she stuck with job. Now, the company is going down the tubes. Many people have been laid off. She's been hoping for many months to be laid off herself so she can get unemployment benefits to aide in a transition. But, for a variety of reasons -- mainly that she's a very efficient employee -- she hasn't been let go. This stressful climate of layoffs and, with it, an increase in workload for her, has made it a very inhospitable workplace. She wants to quit ASAP. But she also doesn't want to miss out on unemployment benefits. What are her options? More inside... [more inside]

I’ve worked for the same company for fifteen years and I recently started realizing I need to get out if I’m to maintain sanity. Problem is, I have no idea where to start, I feel like I’m trapped and my skills have atrophied to the point where it seems this is the only job I could possibly get. This is a multi-part question. My son's 14, and wants to get a job. For instance, the local grocery stores employ kids his age--but they are not hiring at the moment. And state law says he can't operate a fryolater, among other reasonable restrictions listed here. So, who hires 14-year-olds? [more inside]

LaTeX + pdf = employment fail? I am looking for a job and have been using LaTeX to generate my resume and cover-letter. At a recent job interview I was told that they weren't able to print my resume. It looked fine on their computer but when they printed it, it was as if most of the document had been whited-out: a couple of phrases appeared approximately where they should but, most of it was just missing. The research/datawonk job that I (mostly) love has fallen victim to the times and other hazards. Though I'm by no means wedded to this area, the Mr. and I have given it some thought and decided that this is not a good time (for personal or economic reasons, given family nearby and the difficult local housing market) to pick up stakes. Most of my instincts suggest that I really could make a go out of flying solo, at least for a while. This notion has been bolstered by an outpouring of positive comments and support from several community clients. However, I feel like I owe it to myself to at least consider what other options for "stable" employment might be out there that suit me. I have an upcoming interview for a job for a health care organization in the QI department. I'd like to hear from anyone in the hive mind who's gone this route. Given what I've shared above, what might I find fun, tedious, stressful, etc. about this line of work? What would the day-to-day work be like? What kinds of things should I ask about or look out for in my upcoming interview? (More specifics below the fold) [more inside]

I'm in a job offer dilemma. I've verbally accepted an offer that i'm excited about. BUT, a job that I don't hesitate to say would be a dream company for me just had me interview again for one of two positions they are considering me for. Sounds like it is a slam dunk that i would get an offer from DreamCompany but it's the end of their quarter and they are wrangling a few details around, shifting head count, etc and won't have anything firm for a few more days but SortaExcitingCompany needs papers signed TODAY.
Ugh - dilemma..... SortaExcitingCompany does not know anything is up yet. I'm tempted to see about getting a few days extension on the offer but worried about just retracting it all together.
I know everything in the US is "at will" work anyway - but ethics still come into it for me at least.

I find myself in the novel situation, upon being laid off, of having a large number of potential job opportunities. I'm in the tech space, so most organizations work through recruiters, and I'm getting over a dozen calls and emails a day since posting my resume. Many of the job descriptions look like a good fit, so I know I can have my pick of location, type of organization, benefits, salary, etc. It's quite early in my job hunt, and I have the leisure of about 2 months to do it in. I'm looking for tips about how to keep organized and be in control of the situation. [more inside]
