I'm a general geek. I.e. I can do basic HTML, CSS, JScript, PHP, etc. I'm proficient in Photoshop, but by no means an expert. I'm the hardware troubleshooting guy for my family, and a few others (oy). What kind of job am I looking for? There is, of course, more to this... [more inside]

I find myself in the novel situation, upon being laid off, of having a large number of potential job opportunities. I'm in the tech space, so most organizations work through recruiters, and I'm getting over a dozen calls and emails a day since posting my resume. Many of the job descriptions look like a good fit, so I know I can have my pick of location, type of organization, benefits, salary, etc. It's quite early in my job hunt, and I have the leisure of about 2 months to do it in. I'm looking for tips about how to keep organized and be in control of the situation. [more inside]

CareerObjective: I think I have pronounced strengths in almost every area that would benefit a Television Pundit/Talking Head—as well as the strong desire to make a living at same. I also have at least one glaring drawback (hint: I’m a convicted felon) there's a lot more info inside. Feel free to skim if you'd like. [more inside]

My wife and I may be relocating to the Orlando area so that I can start a new job. She currently has a great job (start of long career) as a system analyst at a top-notch company. She earns more money than I do, and probably always will. This year she gets 4 weeks of vacation. She is concerned that if we move to Orlando she will not find a job she likes for the same pay and with the same benefits (e.g. vacation). I had been told (once upon a time) that if you move to another company, you move up in pay, not down. What is the more likely scenario? [more inside]

I've been unemployed for a few months, and have been actively looking for work, with no luck. All I have to go on are classified ads and limited online resources. I have two sneaking suspicions: 1) there are lots of jobs that don't show up in those venues, so how do I find them? and 2) HR departments are generally an impediment to getting a foot in the door, so how do I get past them? Portable careers?

There was a comment the other day in one of the threads about portable careers and I'm very interested in breaking out of the corporate structure and becoming more mobile again.

What are the best resources for making the jump? What are the best career paths to follow to make the move? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
