Where do you want to be in 3 months/ 6 months/ 1 yr/ 3 yrs within the company? My boss asked me to write a response to this when I challenged him about my lack of career direction. Obviously I have my own thoughts, but beyond that, what specifically is *he* wanting to read when I turn this in? What will help convince him to put me on the fast-track to where I want to be?

I am likely to soon get a job offer from Company A. Yesterday, Company B called to schedule an interview for a few weeks from now. I would prefer to work at Company B, but if I didn't get the job, I would want to work at Company A. How do I handle this delicate situation, seeing as we're talking about almost a month until I would have an answer from Company B? [more inside]

I find myself in the novel situation, upon being laid off, of having a large number of potential job opportunities. I'm in the tech space, so most organizations work through recruiters, and I'm getting over a dozen calls and emails a day since posting my resume. Many of the job descriptions look like a good fit, so I know I can have my pick of location, type of organization, benefits, salary, etc. It's quite early in my job hunt, and I have the leisure of about 2 months to do it in. I'm looking for tips about how to keep organized and be in control of the situation. [more inside]

My wife and I may be relocating to the Orlando area so that I can start a new job. She currently has a great job (start of long career) as a system analyst at a top-notch company. She earns more money than I do, and probably always will. This year she gets 4 weeks of vacation. She is concerned that if we move to Orlando she will not find a job she likes for the same pay and with the same benefits (e.g. vacation). I had been told (once upon a time) that if you move to another company, you move up in pay, not down. What is the more likely scenario? [more inside]

I've been unemployed for a few months, and have been actively looking for work, with no luck. All I have to go on are classified ads and limited online resources. I have two sneaking suspicions: 1) there are lots of jobs that don't show up in those venues, so how do I find them? and 2) HR departments are generally an impediment to getting a foot in the door, so how do I get past them? Portable careers?
There was a comment the other day in one of the threads about portable careers and I'm very interested in breaking out of the corporate structure and becoming more mobile again.
What are the best resources for making the jump? What are the best career paths to follow to make the move? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
