Why do I like these clothes?

FashionFilter: Help me find/understand the clothes I'm inexplicably being drawn toward. Every fall, I find that my taste in clothing shifts a little farther away from basic fare and enters--well--I'm not sure. I DO know that most of the styles I like seem to come out of the UK; in other words, overseas to me here in SC. But more on that in a moment. I would like the hivemind's input here (and, for the record, posed a related question a previous fall, with some great input) as well as suggestions, general feedback, etc.

To illustrate just what I'm getting drawn to here, I bought a pair of Madfish Flap lowrise boots (Madfish Flap Boots) and absolutely love them. I purchased a Criminal Damage Hook coat (Hook Trench) and love it as well. I've snagged a pair of Rank jeans (lowrise and ~close leg fit) and my eye has been caught by the pants at the bottom of this page (Black Jail Pants) . They're not really emo clothes, or gothic, or scene, or punk particularly...are they?

Finding this stuff has taken me ages (off-and-on, of course) so I'm open to suggestions on what the common thread is here (if any) and how I might go about finding similar styles. I was pretty well consigned to having fallen in love with European fringe fashion (and by that I mean paying conversion rates and lots of shipping) but that's not quite the case anymore. Ralph Lauren seems to have started carrying similar styles, (check it out in black) Carrier Vintage Flight Pant (although well out of my price range) and the Tommy Hilfiger jacket featured on the far right of The Tommy.com Frontpage (which, mysteriously, has yet to appear in any online stores so far as I know) is a dead ringer for this odd new fashion sense I have. Heck, even American Eagle and the like carry a few red/black frayed-seam T-Shirts that fit the picture. It's mostly black, mostly close-fitting, mostly cotton.

So, maybe some of the hivemind can help me figure this out. How can I find more clothes like these (at less than Ralph Lauren prices)? Is this some sort of European fashion/culture? Are there any recommendable fashion resources/forums where I could ask these questions? Thanks for your time, and hopefully your input.

My emo boss wants to talk about "our relationship" and I would rather not...

My boss wants to talk about "our relationship" and I would rather not... A couple of weeks ago, my boss and I were having a perfectly practical check in meeting where I let her know how all my projects were going and we went over a few details. Then, suddenly, towards the part of the agenda I had called "Professional Development" (I meant to ask her if the nonprofit could reimburse me for a seminar I was hoping to attend) she launched into me and accused me of being disengaged and socially awkward...or something at this team meeting we had the day before. It really wasn't the case, but I couldn't dispute her. It was like she was making stuff up to support her opinion.

I'm not entirely clear on what it was, but I picked up the anger, disgust and hate in her voice. She finally said she couldn't read me and didn't understand me... I was utterly humiliated and defeated. I thought everything was going well.

She's a really new boss, the CEO and founder of the organization. I just took the job and the woman who had hired me actually decided not to work there anymore after 8 years. I decided to take the job anyway because it seemed like an interesting organization.

I didn't know that the new boss would dislike me so much right off the bat. She's a year older than me and seems to want a lot from me emotionally. I'm really bad at caring about weddings and cutesy, gossipy stuff...

My friends and boyfriend say she was probably projecting her pre-wedding jitters at me (she got married the following Saturday) by yelling, but I think she hasn't liked me from the start. I don't know why, but she hasn't and so far, even though she praises my work, but she really doesn't like me. Every time I open my mouth she looks like she wants to hit me. She never even apologized to me.

So she wanted to continue the horrible "discussion" we had before (I had to leave because I was deeply hurt by the personal remarks she made about me) and sent me the following email:

"I'd also like to see how you'd like to follow-up on the discussion that we had on the 12th about communication, team dynamics, our relationship, etc. I'd prefer to find time this week so that you can have my full attention before things get busy. I'd be more than happy to plan something out of the office. I don't think it has to be an epic or a painful discussion, but, as I told you when we spoke, I do think that we need to reconnect. What are your thoughts?"

I really don't want a follow up discussion, frankly. It took me awhile to recover after the first one. I want her to leave me the hell alone and let me do my work.

How can I get her to not pursue it (put a clean stop to it) or should I leave this job since this is probably a huge red flag?

Who's Avril Lavigne meets Panic at the Disco?

What did we hear at the record store? It was like Avril Lavigne meets Panic at the Disco.. but it was neither. We were at the record store the other day but the CDs in the "Playing" rack didn't match what was really playing the whole time we were there. I first thought it was Avril Lavigne, but it wasn't. It sounded very much like a less whiny Avril Lavigne crossed with Panic At The Disco style backing.. that is, upbeat borderline emo (although it was surprisingly unannoying). It wasn't that synthy or truly "punk", so it's not anything like The Sounds.. but I'm kinda stuck beyond that when it comes to female singers doing modern punkemopoprock. Throw your suggestions at me!

(For what it's worth, it sounded like it was made in the last 2 years for sure. It was very Panic at the Disco, just with a Lavigne-esque chick.)

Help me create a playlist that doesn't make people want to down a quart of whiskey.

I like making mixes, but people keep telling me they're a bit depressing--not to put them down, but just like, "Oh, I really liked it, but I wouldn't listen to it all the time, too depressing." Here's the playlist from my most recent mix:

1) New York, New York: Ryan Adams
2) Satellite: Guster
3) Be Be Your Love: Rachael Yamagata
4) Breathe Me: Sia
5) Makers: Rocky Votolato
6) Crosses: Jose Gonzales
7) Waiting for My Real Life to Begin: Colin Hay
8) Something Pretty: Patrick Park
9) Song for You: Alexi Murdoch
10) Honestly: Cary Brothers
11) La Cienega Just Smiled: Ryan Adams
12) These Streets: Paolo Nutini

My taste runs to the indie-emo-Zach Braff movie soundtrack variety. What can I start listening to in order to make my mixes still guitar-strum mellow, but happy, too? Especially newer stuff, no GoGos or anything. Extra points for "Hey! I just decided I love you!" songs.

Are these style clothes "weird"?

I'm finding myself liking punkish/gothic/emo type clothes (I never have before), such as Criminal Damage's "Hook Trench" and "Military Jacket" coats. Is this acceptable for wearing-around clothes, or just too "weird" for most people? I'd like input on this, since it's all rather new to me. I actually purchased the Hook Trench coat as part of a Halloween costume. But I found that I quite liked the style and cut--it feels much more dressy to me than even a traditional suit, and I certainly feel more natural in it. I'm certainly not gothic, emo, punk, or anything of the sort by nature, though...

That being said, is this socially a good idea? Or will people look at me as a poser or perhaps a lost cosplayer?

...I guess what I'm looking for here is input on this, and suggestions about online retailers, etc., things that follow this sort of military/futuristic design.

emo hip hop song

I heard this great hip hop song on some college radio station while driving through Des Moines, IA. The song featured emo bands in the lyrics. For example, I think the first line was, "I took a death cab to see my cutie". Other bands listed in the lyrics were Sunny Day, Burning Airlines, My Chemical Romance, etc. It kinda sounded like Blackalicious, but I don't think it was them. Any idea who did it and where I can get it? Thanks.

"we could have loved! You know it!"

How easily do you become infatuated with people? This is mostly a curiosity question. I’ve been single for.. uhhh.. a long time, and I find that I tend to develop crushes or fixations on attractive and/or interesting girls really frequently. I’ve just started dating actively (much of it via nerve and craig’s list) and I’ve found the same thing – almost all the women I’ve met have been interesting, cool, and generally good looking. Because for the most part I’ve found that I feel pretty comfortable with these women and often like them, it’s sometimes been fairly jarring when things don’t work out, even if it’s only been two dates.

On a related note: how do you deal with being constantly surrounded by beautiful strangers? Baudelaire wrote a great poem about this, what, like, a hundred years ago, so I don’t expect definitive answers, just curious about your thoughts.

I'd like to put together a collection of new (i.e., unfamiliar) music for a friend who gravitates toward the more wistful moments of Belle and Sebastian, James, et al - Brit indie pop that often falls under the dubious label "twee." Any recommendations?
