Stop your whining!

My eMac is whining at me. I've got a 1 GHz G4 eMac that has started to emit a high-pitched whine. Not incredibly loudly, but loud enough to be annoying. This has been happening for some time, but it used to be more intermittently. Now it's fairly steady.

The only thing that helps is to change the resolution of the monitor. I normally work in 1152 x 864 (80 Hz, Millions). If I lower the res to 1024 x 768 (89 Hz, Millions) it stops. If I switch it back to the higher res, it immediately starts up again.

I can't work in that lower resolution.

macModFilter: I have an idea for a mod to my old machine that's beyond my abilities. Apple store geniuses say it can't be done. (pshaw.) How do I find a mad scientist in the SF Bay Area who will take a hack at it? original 700mhz eMac. too slow now. I'm waiting until after MacWorld to get a new machine, but here's what I'd like to do:
Like the CRT, optical drive, ports, etc.
Hate the slow processor and the @&$*ing fan noise.
Let's say I get a mini as a replacement - it has no monitor and not enough ports on it. (I've already gotten great recommendations on how to accessorize the mini from AskMe - thanks!)
I'd like to somehow bypass the processor and thus the fan as well, but keep the CRT and the drive and extra ports, if possible.
I say there must be a way to bypass the logic board (?) and just drill some holes in the case allowing me to connect the monitor/ports to another machine.

Otherwise it'll be too big to keep around and I'll just have to dump/donate/ebay the thing.

I've looked and asked around, and I'm told that all I can do is overclock it. But that'll just make the cooling fan noise even worse.

AppleCare has expired, and I've pretty much gotten my money's worth out of it. I'd be willing to kill the machine in an attempt to make this work.

Anyone know a motivated individual who'd like to spend a weekend with a takeapart <a /href="http://www.aqza37.dsl.pipex.com/eMac/emac.pdf">guide and a soldering iron?

Getting a Mac mini: help me choose a display.

Getting a Mac mini: help me choose a display. Best choice in this case for a new machine would be a mini or an iMac, but I don't really like the form factor on the new iMacs (the side-loading CD slot especially).
But I need a display to go with a mini, and I'm not sure I need to spend $800 on a 20-inch Apple Cinema display.
I've been using an old 700mhz eMac as an entertainment center in a small room, watching DVDs mostly (from about 10 feet away, from various angles). So the CRT has worked fine for me so far. An LCD with a crap viewing angle wouldn’t help.
I'm also thinking about a Slingbox for watching TV as well when the Mac version is ready. Or maybe I should get a monitor with a TV tuner now?

So:
1)	20-inch Apple Cinema = worth the money? Best choice?
2)	Any other good picks for an LCD suitable for watching DVD’s?
3)	LCD monitors with TV tuners = junk?
4)	Another option, maybe should be a whole other question – I’m used to the big eMac blob – and since I liked the CRT (but HATED the cooling fan noise), is there a way I can open it up and mod it so that I can use the eMac’s CRT as the monitor for my mini? Bonus points if I can also use the optical drive and the USB ports, too. I’d love to turn it into a collection of peripherals in a box and lose the processor and the fan. Could I do this without killing myself? Is there a shop in the SF Bay area that could do it for me for less than the cost of a new LCD?

Oh, and I know people hate the eMac, but I always liked mine, so please no MacQuarium or “make it into a nose cone for a rocket and blast it into space” suggestions; I’ve already got those. I’m just hoping to keep it out of the landfill for a while longer.

Which scanner should I get?

I'm looking for a scanner at around the $200 range. I would like a flatbed scanner which can take 35mm and 120 film. Problem is, my eMac doesn't have USB 2.0, so many of the nice scanners they have nowadays won't connect to my machine. So, it needs to be Firewire-compatible. With all that in mind, what model should I get? Will I have to go used? (Also, I've heard that you can't upgrade a non-USB 2.0-having eMac to a USB 2.0-having state. Could that possible be untrue? Weep.)

Final Cut Pro Tutorials?

Final Cut Pro 4
For the next few weeks I have access to an eMac with FCP4 installed. Can anyone recommend any online tutorials to get me on my way. Ones concerned with general video editing techniques as well as those directly related to FCP would be helpful too. [Slightly more inside...] In fact I've just discovered that it is FCP HD 4.5.

I just want to get started with editing together clips from my little digital camera to see how I can get to grips with the monster that is FCP. Editing DV/video capture may come later...

Mac OSX Install

Is there a way to make a Mac OS X (Panther) install CD from a pair of eMac Software Install and Restore DVDs or install the operating system over a network on a computer that lacks a DVD drive? oh yeah, and the other computer isn't an eMac either.

What software should I install on my eMac?

MacFilter - I just got a nearly-new eMac, and its been a while since I've been a mac user. I need some software recommendations... (MI) I have the major programs that I need (office, photoshop, etc), but I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for any fun/good/essential programs that I should have on my mac. Free or cheap is good, I'm primarily interested in stuff like utilities, games, etc.

eMac Running Panther Hangs on "Waiting for Apple File Services"

Mac OS X:
I have an Emac in the office, running OS X 10.3, it boots, gets to the OS X loading screen, then hangs on "Waiting for Apple File Services", I'm perplexed, offering real gifts for a solution that works... More Inside... So i've tried the suggestions, here and reset the P-RAM and logged into single user mode
and did all the things that were suggested here, including multiple FSCK's. Nothing working at all. It's an Emac so I can't get the CD drive open to boot from disk and reinstall w/o some fork work, which I don't want to do. If you can help me out I'll send you a gift, a book, a cookie, donate to charity in your name, give a homeless person a ten spot or just love your forever.
