My gym has several different types of cardio equipment. I've been using the recumbent bike for a while now, but recently tried the elliptical. The elliptical seems to say that I'm getting more "bang for my buck" in terms of exertion for calories burned. Is this possible, or is the machine inaccurate? [more inside]

I live in an apartment on an upper level unit. I wish I could buy a treadmill to use at home, but I think the noise will bother my neighbors too much. I'm looking for a good alternative. Do you know of any? [more inside]

Why can't I do the elliptical? I thought it was supposed to mimic running but lower impact, and I have no problem running. [more inside]

YANMPersonalTrainer: Should I keep my feet flat when using the elliptical machine or should I faux-run like the guy using the machine next to me?

A recent conversation advised (possibly anecdotal) info that elliptical trainers can create foot numbness (it happens to me too) and lead to hip problems. This is the first time I have heard of the potential for 'hip problems' - does anyone else know anything about it? Is it a myth? I am a nearly 40 mum keen to get back on my trainer...

Mr. hellbound and I are going to buy either a treadmill or an elliptical.
Please recommend models of either machine and describe comparative advantages of having one vs. the other. [more inside]

Where can a person rent an elliptical exercise machine (e.g. Precor) in New York City? I'm interested in getting a high quality elliptical machine for home use, but I'm concerned about the cost and my relative lack of self-motivation. I don't want to spend $2000+ on a machine that I use five times then ignore. I'd rather rent for a while until I'm sure it works for me. I need something at home -- gym membership is not an option.
Is there any company that will rent me an elliptical machine by the month, and deliver to my apartment in Manhattan?
