Cards Against Humanity, but for eight-year-olds

My 7-year-old joined in a slightly-edited but rollicking family game of Papercuts (Cards Against Humanity, but for literature) over Christmas and wants to do NOTHING ELSE. So now we are making a homemade version for our 7- and 5-year-olds. Create for me little-kid CAH answers and questions! [more inside]

Help our elementary school get gender balance in gifted math and science

Today I had to have the uncomfortable discussion with my 5th grade daughter about "why there aren't more girls on the Science Bowl team." Apparently, there are 5 girls out of 16 competitively awarded spots. A couple of years ago, we had the exact same discussion about TAG math-- she wanted to drop out because she was the only girl in her group. [more inside]

How to keep a first grader engaged in school?

Our soon-to-be 6 year old is a first grader in public school. He is FAR ahead of the rest of his class in reading.* This year he has a great teacher, who took the initiative to get in touch with us after the first week of school to ask: I'd appreciate it if you could convey any particular ways you believe we can all challenge your son and keep him fully engaged and happy (besides making sure he has Level M/N books he enjoys). Pros and Cons of retention for a 4th grader with special needs

I'm looking for research or studies that examine the pros and cons of having a child with special needs (especially Autism Spectrum Disorder) repeat a grade versus social promotion. I'd also like to hear from teachers or educators who've held kids back and any students (especially those that were receiving special education services) that were held back in the 3rd, 4th or 5th grade and how it impacted you. Help me come up with exciting "sharing themes" for my second graders!

I am in my first year of teaching (2nd grade, so 7-8 year olds), and as part of our regular (or semi-regular) weekly routine, kids share something to the rest of the class in the morning. It's a part of the 2nd grade tradition here to have "themes" for each new week of sharing, and I'm running out of ones that inspire me. [more inside]

Brainstorming school fundraising

So at the last minute (today) I got "volunteered" to be the parent rep. for my daughter's classroom at a parent's association brainstorming session tomorrow for fundraising. Help me make more money as a retired substitute teacher! (Cleveland)

I am a recently retired elementary school teacher living in a suburb of Cleveland. I have again caught the teaching bug and am doing substitute teaching at schools near my home almost every weekday using a program my son found for me online (aesop Jobulator). I love the work, but the pay is just $80-85/day: Decent, but not what I want to be making with my experience and degrees. I would like to make a bit - or a lot! - more so I can save up some money, travel to Japan and visit my son next year. [more inside]

What's the matter with Carruthers

I'm trying to locate elementary reading textbooks from the late 70s early 80s. All I have to go on is that the first grade text was a 3 parter and the first two parts were Footprints and Carousel and were in paperback format. Later grades had the heavy textbook type in a monochrome cover and one was called Melody( I think this was the third grade text) and was either teal or violet. The other books in that series also had a one word title and a monchrome color scheme for the covers. [more inside]
