Nerdy fun for kids in PDX

So I'm visiting my wife's family in Portland and just discovered that the electronics surplus wonderland known as "Wacky Willy's" went out of business several years ago. It was sort of like Archie McPhee's for Maker types. Are there other similar places that I can take my budding geek 12-year-old that are similar to Wacky Willy's? [more inside]

Help Me H4x0r My Xmas Lights?

I bought a few strands of cheap LED Xmas lights this year. They include a circuit box with several settings to make the lights flash in different patterns. The circuit box resets itself (to a new annoying setting) each time the lights are unplugged or when it shorts out in the rain, and I also suspect the box is the product's "built-in expectancy" (since otherwise LEDs might last too long to be profitable. Can I bypass the box? [more inside]

What type of sensor for three dimensional position tracking?

What type of electronic position sensor (aka tracker) should I use to track the position of an object in three dimensions? How do I catalog all of my iOS apps in one place?

I want to put together a list of every iOS app I've ever purchased. And I've purchased a LOT. I know I can go into my account information on Itunes and pull purchase history, but it only displays in small 'batches' at a time and I can't cut & paste from there. Next thought is to pull it from Itunes receipts in Gmail, but I don't want to have to go into each email & cut/paste into another document. Is there any way to concatenate all the emails automagically? Is there another solution for this I'm not thinking of?

Help me replace a blown woofer for a Spica TC-60

How do I replace a blown woofer in a Spica TC-60 loudspeaker? The datasheet is here. I am generally capable, but don't know anything about building/repairing speakers. Can I get away with replacing just the one? Is there any danger of damaging the crossover (whatever that is)? The very nice guy from Madisound recommended a ScanSpeak replacement but how do I know if it will fit and/or work properly? If I'm reading the datasheet correctly, the original seems to be 180mm in diameter, and the replacement he recommended 170mm - is this a good idea? How can I tell if there's anything else I should try? What, if anything, do I seem to be overlooking? Thank you!

PIR circuit to switch off door alarm

I am trying to build a circuit to turn off an alarm when a passive infrared sensor detects a human in a room. Yes this is a bit backward but it is for turning off a door alarm when our receptionist is at her desk rather than detecting intruders. I know enough about electronics to just get myself in trouble (which isn't much), so any advice on parts and construction would be excellent. Thanks!

Mystery Cell Phone Display Question

I was with a person that had an older style cell phone, I think it was an LG, but not sure. He was showing me pictures, but I was distracted with a series of around 10-12 numbers that were displayed on the screen, to the left and top of the picture area (not inside). They kept changing about once a second, each digit with no regularity. One would think that it may have been GPS coordinates but the numbers were too random and not changing in any particular sequence. What the heck was that? A tracking device? When I asked him what it was he very quickly deflected the question.
