Over the last few years I've become very passionate about the pursuit of electronic music, and I'd like to become very proficient at sampling/remixing/dj-ing etc. Having been inspired by artists such as Daft Punk, Justice, the Twelves, etc., I would love to be able to do what they do, but many of their production techniques are completely beyond me. Are there any schools/programs out there that can teach me the skills to become a professional-level electronica artist? Ideally I would like to find a degree program in electronic music, rather than a diploma or certificate.

Please name the artist who made this mystery electronica/dance song. I pulled it off of ageispolis's fantastic MeFiSwap mix, but sadly, he only knows the name: "The Hand". I don't know if it's the mystery of it, but it's my favorite track among a lot of great tracks. And I want to hear more, but Googling is is essentially impossible since there are no lyrics. According to his liner notes, he ripped it from a friend's vinyl. (Link to downsampled MP3 inside.) [more inside]

I often see artists such as David Gray and Dido, or specific cd's such as Bright Eyes' Digital Ash in a Digital Urn listed as electronica. However, when I look at Wikipedia's entry on electronica, the stuff listed there seems to be a much different genre. How would you classify the above music, and what are some similar type artists or cd's?

What are the lyrics of the Metric song Police and the Private about? Drug addiction? Prostitution? Post-9/11 security? I have listened to it 50 times and it's driving me completely nuts; I can't figure it out. The last lines seems to undo the above meanings.

I'm going to Belgium (Gent area) in a while and I'm interested in really exploring european music (electronica/dance espescially). I'll be there for the last 5 days of De Gentse Feesten. I'd like reccomendations for live acts to see (electronica or not) and places to pick up vinyl that would be unavailable/expensive stateside (dance music in particular) in Gent.

Irma/Mana records? They just played this track again, so I emailed the station and got the reply Children Dreams - Traditional Lullabies from Around the Globe. There's an image and track listing here and the album is listed on various sites. There's no spanish track, so I'm guessing it was the brazilian one (Bambalalao). Now I need to find the company that issued the compilation to ask who recorded it. I don't think it's this IRMA (they don't list the CD in any catalagoue, as far as I can tell and the style seems very different). So I've hit a dead end. Where now? [mi] [more inside]

HellFreezesOverFilter: I'm actually interested in finally giving electronica a chance. The only previous songs of the genre I've appreciated were tracks by Moby (esp. "Flower") and Fatboy Slim ("Going Out Of My Head") and the Avalanches ("Frontier Psychaitrist"). Most of you know my sensibilities well enough to make reccomendations. (for those who don't, here's an idea.) Fire away, kids.

estes muertos viven en el campo - my local radio station played a song with these lyrics (pretty repeptitive, woman's voice). but google turns up nothing. i guess i have something wrong (surely every lyric ever is on the 'net?). any suggestions? the station plays a pretty eclectic mix of songs, but given the location (chile) and language (spanish), i guess this could be a local track (if so, i want to know even more, because it sounded very different to the usual stuff from round here). and as a (only vaguely related) bonus link for those who've read this far (and don't yet have the album) - suba's sao paulo confessions are even more wonderful than everyone says.
