Looking for more ethereal electronic
(is that even what the kids call it these days?) music with a certain feeling to it - sort of happy, sort of sad, slightly otherworldly, all blending to create a dreamy, transcendant feeling.

Hello, I'm trying to get a playlist for my hubbie for him to code to - ideally electronica, drum and bass, EDM or even modern classical like Arvo Part. Only caveat is that there must be no lyrics - I'd love to hear your favourite picks! I've got a bunch up already at blip for him - he listens to my radio station there - user name - emilybear - to give you an idea of what I've got there currently but I need more, so much more as there's a whole lot of coding to be done.
Thanks!

I don't know much about electronic music. I know I like the deep, twisting, inertial sounds and rhythms of stereotypical dubstep. But whenever I go through "best album"-type lists of dubstep albums, almost all of them are more subdued. That's not to say I don't like them -- the oft-recommended London Zoo and Untrue now have a permanent spot in my music rotation -- but they just don't have that intense WUB WUB WUB feel.
Here's a good example of what I'm looking for. What are some great albums with music in this style?

Help me find electronic music that sounds like machines. Some examples are
Diamond Catalog,
SPK, and
Nate Young. Boards of Canada also comes very close. Unsettling but not aggressive (e.g. not Big Black). Chaotic but not out of control (e.g. not Merzbow's Merzbeat or Pulse Demon). Thanks!

How do you keep track of and find new DJs and electronic music - the kind you would dance to at clubs and festivals? The rules seem to be different compared to album-based rock/pop music I'm more familiar with.

I'm a drummer in an indie-rock band with a 5-piece kit who is looking to expand my setup to include a drum sampling pad. I want something that has unique percussion sounds (not just cheesy electronic beats), built-in effects, plenty of storage space to upload my own samples, and the ability to record and loop live drumbeats. Any advice?

What was that music webapp I had on my iPod? Help me remember the site I had saved to my homescreen a while ago. I'm fairly sure it was a webapp and not a proper app. I seem to remember the name for the icon was shortened to a two-letter acronym; I thought it was DI for digitalinspiration.com but googling that shows I was wrong. I'll try to describe it anyway: the app had a series of square, colourful icons down the left-hand side, not unlike the style to the iTunes gift card drawings. Each icon represented a category; I definately remember 'lounge', and the others were mostly dance/electronic music related genres like house, groove etc. probably hip-hop stuff too. Definately a cool and groovy site.

What's the bass & drum style of Flight of the Conchords
Sugalumps, particularly 9th through 15th second of the video, called?
Rhapsody's genres has something called Electro-Funk which includes artists like the Bass Mekanik that include test tones on some albums and Bass Transmission. I'm particularly interested in the sustained low low bass "notes," particularly when combined with higher percussion (snare) in a really danceable, but somewhat slow tempo.

On Friday I'm going to Birmingham (Sutton Coldfield) for three months (until early may) for an engineering internship. What should I know? What's the Birmingham area known for amongst Britons? What should I absolutely not miss in my down time? What social norms (at work or otherwise) might be unusual to me? What do locals do for fun? What parts of the city should I wander around in to get a sense of the place (and in which areas would doing so get me killed or served with an anti-social order)?

A little while back I heard a bass guitar player with some kind of amazing live looping set-up - what on earth was it? I keep wondering what he was doing. All I could see was that he was grabbing (sampling) things he was playing, as he was playing them (ie while he was continuing to play), using foot pedals of some sort, and then incorporating those loops into the rest of the track. Amazing. But how?
