harshing my buzz

Please recommend me an electric razor, available on Amazon, for buzzing my head. I'm tired of paying $15 a pop to have someone run a buzzer over my head for four minutes! I have Amazon credit, so I'm looking to buy something available there. I'd like something that has multiple closeness settings (1, 2, 3, 4 or whatever). I've never buzzed my own hair before, so if there's such thing as razors that are more or less user-friendly, that's a factor. I am somewhat price-conscious, so basically I'm looking for the cheapest thing that's good.

If it could double as a face shaver, that would be pretty dang awesome, but it's not the most important factor.

Thanks!

Switched to an electric razor... Will it get better?

After about 6 years of wet shaving with a DE razor, I finally got fed up with the cuts and the time requirement. I picked up a Norelco Sensotouch 3D after reading that rotary is best for people with thick beards and omni-directional hair growth, and that rotary is a less close shave than linear (I don't want too close, because I get ingrown hairs).

It's been 3 days. My face is covered in bumps, and my neck is red. Is this part of the 3-week "adjustment period"? Will it get better?

Thanks!

Best rotary-style electric razor?

Dear face-shaving persons of MetaFilter, what is your preferred electric rotary razor? Mr. Sidhedevil has a tough beard and tender skin, and insists on using a rotary-head-style electric. The most recent AskMe on this was from 2010, so hoping there are some new good models out there. We're in the US, so it has to be available here. He has tried a non-rotary foil style electric razor and hated it, and (this will probably surprise nobody considering that he is my husband) he is somewhat set in his ways and resistant to change, so if folks could stick to the rotary models only that would be a great help.

ISO the best beard grooming system for my special bearded person. My dude is an extremely fair brunette (very dark hair) with hella thick, straight hair on top and a thick, soft, full beard. He has sensitive, reactive skin and some tendency to get ingrowns where he shaves with a razor (neck, places outside the lines of his beard). His preference is to keep a fairly conservatively-shaped full beard with a smooth neck. It's not so long, but not on-purpose stubble close, either (long enough to be soft, I guess).

He has struck out in his quest to get the right tools to efficiently trim his beard and keep the smooth parts shaved without blotchiness and ingrowns. So now, he has asked me to take over the search and gift him with a nice system for his holiday present.

He has decided that Wahl is a non-starter--he's tried several of their mid priced systems and feels they don't handle his very thick beard without snagging, pulling, and trimming unevenly before they simply break down (he has problems with the plastic guards snapping off and snagging in his beard when he trims). He thinks he may be interested in a system that includes an electric razor component for his neck, but wonders if this will mean neither component (the trimmer or the shaver) will work well. He's looking for extremely high functionality that can handle his beard's thickness but is still precise. He also wonders if razor shaving the rest is the best option, or if there is something he's missing to avoid freaking out the skin on his neck.

He's tired of dealing with tools that are supposed to trim and end up making it look like his beard was unevenly chewed--because his skin is so fair and his beard is so dark, he feels unintentionally shorter patches created by a suck trimmer "glow through." He's tired of trimmers that break down inside a year despite good care. He's tired of a blazing red razor-burned neck.

I am hoping that other bearded mefites can help me find an excellent system south of 150ish (also, I have Amazon Prime)? Additionally, if you are moved to provide personal advice that you think might help him (or me) feel free.

Red-Light Shaving?

Electric razor / shaver for touch-up shaving in the car? (at red lights of course). I have a city commute with a lot of red lights and I'd like to use this time to do some touch-up shaving.

I don't need an especially close shave -- I just want to be (visibly) presentable for work.

I do a Mach 3 shave about once a week for smoothness, but in between I get more stubbly than I'd like. I don't like shaving and I'd rather not increase the frequency of my full shaves -- so I'm looking for an easy way to touch-up mid-week.

Ideally I'd like an electric razor that I can keep in my car and charge/power through the cigarette lighter (or USB, as my phone's car charger has a USB port). Alternatively, I could use a cordless razor that I charge inside overnight.

Any suggestions on a razor that will do the trick? I'd prefer it to cost $60 or less but I would spend more if your recommendation is enthusiastic enough.

Best electric pre-shave product?

I'm looking for a lotion, oil, powder, etc. that'll help me get a closer shave with my electric razor. Any experience? While I'm open to less common solutions, I'm optimally looking for something I can just grab at CVS. In the past I've used baby oil which has worked well, but are there any other options (specifically for electric razors or alternative solutions) that might be better? I've seen commercials for Lectric Shave recently and was wondering. Thanks!

Long Haired Mama Seeks Lawnmower

Razor Filter: What's a good electric razor for legs and face? Mama Moth has, like her sisters and female relatives, a moustache. While not bothered by this to the extent of laser removal, she wants a little workhorse of a razor she can use on her mouth and chin area and then on her legs in the summer time. Thus she has asked me (her daughter) to beg the mighty green mefi for their advice in this matter.

The intended gender of the razor doesn't matter, and she'll pay plenty if it's a nice, long lasting unit that gives a good shave. So, give ye your advice, oh wise and mighty hivemind! Which products are worth it and which aren't worth the cost of stamps to return them?

"Training a beard" for an electric razor

Why would my beard need to "get used" to an electric razor? I purchased a fancy-schmancy Braun razor over the holidays--it's my first electric razor. I've been using it for three days, and I'm happy with it (primarily because of its convenience, and because I like gadgets). It shaves closely enough for government work, so to speak, but not as close as the Mach 3 Turbo that I'd been using. (Blade razors and my skin weren't getting along so well, which is why I thought I'd try electric.)

The manual that came with the razor claims that it will take 10-12 days to "train my beard" to the new razor so that I'll get an optimal shave, and that I'm not to use a manual razor in the meantime. Research I did before buying the electric razor indicates that all manufacturers say something similar--two to four weeks for the best shave. Why is this? Is this a marketing ploy that translates to, "It'll take you a couple of weeks to get used to the idea of having just a bit of stubble left over from shaving"? Or is it because it will take me that much time to learn how to shave with the new razor? Or does hair actually respond differently to an electric razor over the course of a couple of weeks?

Homemade Cleaning Solution for Braun Syncro?

Anyone know a recipe for a homemade refill for a Braun Syncro electric razor cleaning cartridge? I have a Braun 7526 Syncro Shaver System with Clean & Charge Storage Stand. The "cartridge" light came on this morning, so I have to replace the cleaning cartridge. I would prefer to do this myself, rather than order new cartridges. Googling brought up a recipe of alcohol and lemon juice, but I also read that it might be bad for the machine. I know that they are only $8.99 for two, but I am cheap. Any help would be appreciated.
