Botched Electrical Job, Unresponsive Electrician

I hired an electrician to upgrade my service, and I just found some live tube ferrule wiring beneath a bathroom floor (he promised me none of it would be live). What actions can I take against the electrician? [more inside]

Is anyone here familiar with NJATC? Worked for/with them?

For career and appropriate tech: Should I be an electrician or plumber?

I'm currently in the application process for the plumbers/pipefitters and electricians unions in my area. I'm trying to decide which one I'd prefer, if I get a choice. I like that both are licensed trades where I could work on big industrial/commercial projects but also have good residential skills. Also, I'm interested in alternative/appropriate/transition technology -- and I'm wondering which trade would give me more versatile skills for that sort of application. Any advice on which trade might give me more skills to make appropriate tech? [more inside]

Tenant's Rights / Electrical work question - Hudson County NJ

While I was dusting the blades on one of our ceiling fan/light units it made a loud grinding/zapping noise and fiery sparks flew out. Needless to say it is now turned off at the wall and will stay that way until an electrician takes a look at it.

Short version: our landlord doesn't want to send an electrician. I on the other hand do not want to be electrocuted or burn the building down. Is there a ballpark figure for how much an electrician might charge to inspect/repair the fan? And has anyone had experience with similar tenant/landlord issues in Hudson County NJ? [more inside]

Help me find this article about household AC power.

I once read a great article explaining why we use polarized plugs, grounding, and GFCI outlets in household AC circuits. It was written from the perspective of an electric company whose customers keep getting electrocuted by their appliances. The company introduces the safety measures one by one and the article explains how people still get shocked. It might even have been a comment on Metafilter; I'm not sure. Where can I find it?

How to I find a good electrician?

I am prepping a whole-house restoration in Los Angeles. Walls are coming down; new electrical is going in. My electrical needs will include the usual lights and switches and outlets, but also low voltage stuff like security, audio/video and wifi/internet. My question is twofold: 1) What is the best way to source a good electrician? (I would like to meet with at least a few at the property before making a selection.) 2) What is the best way to verify an electrician is good?

My employers need an electrician. I need advice on hiring one!

Hooray! I got my employers' approval to get some electrical work we've badly needed for a long time in our lab/office suite done. I have no word-of-mouth recommendations of local electricians to go on, so I'm checking around online and trying to get quotes. As such, I have a few questions on how to most effectively screen for quality, recognize a fair price for the work, and deal with the etiquette aspects of the quoting process. [more inside]

Renting at a place where 3-prong outlets not grounded properly

My wife and I recently rented a house in the Phinney Ridge area of Seattle.
