I'm getting back into playing my electric guitar. Two questions: 1) how do I tell whether it's worth throwing money at the existing guitar vs. getting a new one (details inside, I'm in Boston); and 2) what's a good effects processor these days (details also inside).

What are some of the best resources on the electric guitar? Any medium is welcome: books, videos, articles, etc. Money is not an issue; if there's a really good reference that costs thousands of dollars, I'd like to know about it. Collectively, I'd like these resources to cover everything a professional electric guitarist would need to know, from technique (basic and advanced) to related tech (amps, effects units, etc.) to guitar maintenance. Thank you!

I have an old Line6 GuitarPort with Gearbox 3.5 on a Windows laptop. Does anyone know if there is a Line6 plugin or other software available (from Line6 or elsewhere) that I can download to my laptop that will simulate a looper pedal (or a phrase looper as defined by
wikipedia ).
I'm trying to record the rhythm for a song I like, have it loop and then freestyle the solo on my guitar, all through my computer.

Does leaving your guitar effects pedals plugged in (chained) reduce their battery life, or is battery life affected only when you forget to turn them off?

Why are electric guitar pickups designed the way they are? Wouldn't it be a lot more effective to run a weak current through the strings and have single coil pickups without magnets? The wiring would be slightly more complicated, but I'd think the increased signal to noise ratio would justify this. I'm assume I'm missing some big drawback or inviability though.

I just bought my first electric guitar (Fender Telecaster Mexican) and I absolutely love it. Ever the gearhead, I really want to upgrade the pickups to get a better, tailored to me sound. I've searched around to find some kind of guide, but I have come up empty. I'm looking for a really clean, sharp and twangy sound with less extra noisy buzz than I am getting now. Any suggestions/resources?
