Bathroom light turning off

You are not my electrician but I was wondering if you might experienced this problem. My bathroom has a fluorescent light with a pull switch and a ventilation fan that comes on automatically. I think they run off the same circuit. The light normally comes on fine but after a while- probably about half an hour normally- the light goes off. [more inside]

What motivates electric companies to repair the power lines?

I don't really understand the utility industry very much but I've noticed some electric companies are very responsive to getting lines up from damage and have crews out at 2 a.m., and others don't even start work until the next day. What motivates them? Is it primarily loss of earnings from all the meters not running? Are there regulatory performance expectations? Or is there some sort of precedent in litigation that would put them at fault for underperforming? [more inside]

Landlord wants to replace gas oven with electric. Help?

MeFi Mechanics--Older Car Issue

My wife and I have a rather old Lexus with low miles. On each of the last two times we took it out, the car shuddered a couple of times (like driving over a bump) and then lost all engine power, conking out in the middle of the road. There was no sound involved--just that little shudder, and then no power. Each time, we had to push it to the shoulder. Each time, the car would start up again with no problem--but would not stay on. Some more details inside--any ideas what's up? [more inside]

What would be involved in converting an old SUV into an electric vehicle

This is just a thought experiment at this point, and probably will remain so. In the back of my mind I have the idea that when my old SUV finally gives up the ghost I might rip out the internal combustion drivetrain and convert it to an electric vehicle, possibly with a removable range-extender generator. Setting practicality aside for the moment, can you help me envision what this would involve? [more inside]

Ideas and advice for a DIY electric bike on the cheap.

For a long time I've thought that it would be a fun project to put together an electric bicycle. However I've been stymied by the cost and questionable quality of the existing kits, and the complications and compromises of the various DIY methods that are out there online. I have some ideas for how to go about making a cheap and simple electric bike, but I'll be the first to admit that I'm nobody's idea of an engineer so I thought I'd run some things by y'all and see what insights you have. As if the bar exam wasn't horrible enough.

I'm house-sitting. A moment ago, the lights in my kitchen dimmed, and then went out. The stove was on while this happened. The A/C has also stopped blowing cold air, although it was making a weird buzzing noise before I manually shut the blower off via the thermostat. Lights and the fan in the living room are working, but everything is dead in the kitchen except the stove. Upstairs A/C and lights are dead as well. [more inside]

Is our house killing our MacBook chargers?

In the past year or so, around four MacBook chargers have basically stopped working (I've lost count as this includes a couple of old chargers from early MacBooks we had lying around), all in mysterious fashion. Generally they overheat more than I think is normal, and often they switch to the dreaded, "Not charging" status. On one of them, the rubber insulation melted completely then buckled. I am wondering whether it's just a coincidence that so many chargers have died, or if the wiring in our old house could be to blame? [more inside]

My employers need an electrician. I need advice on hiring one!

I have no word-of-mouth recommendations of local electricians to go on, so I'm checking around online and trying to get quotes. Table top coffee milk steamer for cappuccino

Hey Guys, I have a mypressi, which is a portable C02 powered espresso machine. It seems to work pretty good, but the included milk frother does not produce a true milk froth which you would expect to get when you order a cappuccino. I found the linked video on youtube and became intriqued with the steamer/water heater setup he was using. Does anyone know who manufactures that steamer? I have found a stove top model online while searching, but not the electric one used in the video. Any help would be awesome. Thanks guys and gals! Youtube Video Link ~Craig

Are electric fans safe to use in hot rooms?

Is it safe to run an electric fan in a hot room? I always assumed it was, but a Houston Chronicle blog post claims that doing so will accelerate the body's overheating. That sounds extremely dubious to me, and I wonder if it's simply a variation of the superstitious claim that sleeping near a fan can cause death. In preparation for Hurricane season, I gave battery powered fans to everyone in my family, including my ninety seven year old grandfather, so I'm hoping to clear this up, before any of us actually need the fans. It it weren't for the fact that I'd given these fans to family, I'd probably just laugh it off as sloppy journalism, but I want to be sure that they're safe to use during a power outage. Opinions would be appreciated, obviously.
